thats true but it doesnt mean that techno aint popular.
no its not popular.
take for instance hydraulix. currently the biggest selling techno label outside of beatports dodgy definition of techno.
the label is run by davethedrummer, the biggest selling artist thru the last 15 years. he's currently moving 2000 units at the very most on his biggest tracks. that is not popular.
my very first release moved 8000, that was when my stuff was unknown and that was considered a little below average for an unknown artist on an average sized label. my release on stayupforever 2 years ago barely broke even but was one of the bigger selling tracks of that year for them and got licensed to a few mixes. that to me is senseless.
how, i ask, is that popular?0 -

So what, in you guys opinion, is the best way for a producer to get his music heard, signed and released while getting a 'liveable' profit?
make contact with label owners on a personable level. let them know that you love what you do. be business like. be polite.
but above all be bloody good.0 -

yup.
use the frameworks of industry already established. Go straight to respected labels.
Then sort out a bookings agent.
You have to be good for both to work out.0 -

in this day and age of the internetz where everyone is an expert, there'll be no shortage of people willing to shoot you down if you dont make the grade.
take it on the chin and learn from it.
on the other hand the opposite applies. people still notice talent.
if all else fails try x-factor :pac:0 -

lol - you think i'm still green after losing that amount of money - i don't think i've met anyone who doesn't understand how experience and life *teach*.
I learned an aweful lot about legalese.
The word liases is used in this context so you can understand it:-
I purely liase, the artist is given options on all choices made (like approving spending on PR etc...)
Artists can have problems with communication with companies and businesses - some are autistic, shy or introverted - so helps to heve someone make the calls for them.
You really must have tunnel vision to flame what i'm doing by presuming that me, my life and applications of my sore ass from all the kickings are 'superflous'
Only a totally ignorant person with no understanding of others learning experience would presume anothers purpose in life to be meaningless.
You wouldn't beleive what i do to help people. Far from leech from them and sit on my arse.
and i don't mean the services you provide. I mean on a day to day basis.
And I was not flaming what you do. Because I still don't know what you do.
And as far as the term 'liaise' goes. Are you telling me that in order to communicate with people in a label some people need a translator/interpreter?
I've come across my fair share of socially maladjusted, autistic (as you put it), introverted, and genuinely nuts musicians in my times (in fact I'm a bit of all those).
But I have never ever seen the need for someone to liaise between them and the labels. Never.
But I've seen plenty of people doing that job.0 -
well im gonna say that if your not selling on beatport your not doing much, just coz you dont agree with what beatport label as techno doesnt make it so.
there no reason for these labels not to be on beatport, its very basic business i imagine.
there are genuine techno labels on beatport so quoting the sales of a label thats not on it im not surprised its small coz most people buy there music from beatport.
what about sci+tec, there doing good sales these days.
yes theres labels on there that are called techno but arent strictly techno but there are some real techno labels on there selling well.
im not debating your credentials at all, your definitely qualified to talk on it.:D0 -

i think you need to go back and have another look at beatport. those labels are 100% on it as well as every other download store and every vinyl shop. im talking about 2 of the biggest labels in the techno scene. dont want to sound rude but i think you need to research a little more.
as for my own label, i could still be on beatport but my digital distro goes down a differant route and beatports business model is not something i agree with. the first 3 releases were on it and i removed the label altogether, even after some good sales. but as a smaller "hobby" label i can afford to do that - our releases get respect on the scene for quality output, i have no interest in huge sales figures. techno to me is now a hobby. ive gone back to it being something i love and not a business that causes me stress.0 -

what is it you don't agree with?
it'd want to be something fairly significant to close off that huge a proportion of the market0 -

would it not be wise for you to be on beatport,if the releases sold well when they were on there?0 -

so you're not selling as many records as you used to. how does that contradict the fact that techno is very popular?
davethedrummer is the biggest selling artist through the last 15 years?

this is nothing to do with me or my releases dude. and im sorry but if you're not aware of davethedrummers sales record then you really have no part in a discussion about techno.
sorry, not being rude and not taking the "im so great" road but i do know exactly what im talking about. look at the biggest labels out there. fine audio, noom, compressed, pouinding grooves, hydraulix, apex, mutate to survive, bound, any UCMG label, anything from the stayupforever collective.. all have tons of releases from davethedrummer (or henry cullen, or strobe or secret hero)

- i'm one of those socially maladjusted autistic people jtsuited
I spend my days, either looking after my 1 year old son (cute factor 100), or a number of things pretty much all music related.
There's too much stuff going on to even begin to list it within any reason.
Either teaching myself stuff, experiement with new gear and learning about it.
Developing my own music - this is both electronic / trance at the moment with some electro projects hopefully starting one i find some quality writers.
Listening to music sent to me and giving feedback / direction, this comes under an umbrella of production - a person might send me links to their favourite genre and i'd help bounce ideas off and steer their music towards that genre if they can't one-shot it.
Most the mechanics behind the nuts and bolts behind the business are being tied up - so i've liased with publishers, ditros and labels to start making connections... i was more concered with getting publisher and distro sorted in the early days, so have been chasing them to get that sorted.
Speaking with a friend in MGM about getting more options for distro and PR sorted - he's a close friend that's kept me in check with reality and the business a hell of a lot.
The autism (or social maladjustment as u call it) - stems from many things, i deal with it more and more each day - it's quite hard to get over ones own self - i used music to tame my suicidal tendancies, then therapy from a professional really helped - so i'm able to get through life and add a touch of altruism (like being 100% open and honest in business)
One thing i pride myself on is that i'm going to run this business as best as i can using past experience to make sure that other people don't get mangled in the music industry (or their time wasted)
Right at this moment, dinners cooking downstairs and i've got a mix of a friend that i've been tweaking with every atom of my body wanting it too sounds sweet as f*uck - giving it some nices touches and depth while i do.
Music, music, music (the kiddie always comes first though - ALWAYS
He's very cute.0 -

sorry for posting that stupidly large discogs but it kinda proves my point.

as far as the autistic thing goes, I score 36 on the spectrum, but that's probably caused by my love of numbers, gadgets and all that. Oh and my synesthesia.
So I do know what you're talking about to an extent.
Socially though I'm fine (apart from the internets, but everybody's a little bit silly there)0 -

he's got a big discography and nowadays doesn't sell that much. that does not mean techno isn't popular.
It just means his brand of techno isn't popular.
Now much as I don't like the guy, Richie Hawtin is one of the biggest dj's in the world. And he plays techno. How could that be? Maybe techno is very popular?
Now you're probably going to say 'no that's not techno' but the rest of the world thinks it is, and beatport thinks it is. And it's the name of a genre. You don't own it. So for all intents and purposes, let's just call it techno.0 -
;P - The contract i fire off pretty much spells things out, i tried to get it into plain english so that people can get their head around it - cost me 500e to get drawn up by a decent lawyer.
It's all early days for this stuff anyway - i'm hoping to kick things off in March time, so will probably start posting the whole lot up here step by step for those interested warts and all.
Numbers - i thought i was bad.... there's no way on earth i'm gonna talk about that on this forum lol.

which feckin direction are you looking if you think they're the biggest labels out there?
Into the past perhaps?
Biggest techno labels of current times would be labels like Ovum, Bpitch, Sci+Tec, Get Physical, Toolroom, Renaissance, Harthouse etc.0 -

firstly, he is still the biggest selling artist in the genre. his decline in sales is indicitive of the genre as a whole, not just his own. his label is one of the best sellers for the only big electronic distro left. says it all really.
and mr hawtin himself has stated that what he makes isnt techno anymore. fair enough, fuse and to a lesser extent plastikman certainly were, and im a huge hawtin fan but is richie wrong about his own music?
i dont claim to own the name "techno" but i do claim to have extensive knowledge of it from a very very long time being involved in it. are you going to claim that your opinion is more valid than mine because you look at beatport? its not, same as mine is no more valid than yours. but im backing up what i say with facts, that are i must point out relevent to my little end of the scene.
so lets just chill this because we are at two totally differant ends of a genre spectrum and no matter what you say i have to disagree with you as to what constitutes techno.0 -
