Assuming you are not a millionaire, what is the most you would spend on a hand bag?

I want to buy this bag in M & S, it is 160 euro which I think is a lot of money so I am humming and hawing a bit on the other had I know I would have it for years its a leather satchel backpack bag the sort of bag I love.

Id pay that for a nice quality leather bag but not much more. (200 max). I am not into brands at all though.

I love a nice leather bag. If the leather is good quality and you see yourself getting years of use from it, then I don't think it's expensive.

I've got bags I've paid a good bit more for, but I think they're worth it because I love a stylish, well made bag. I only buy real leather though, I've no time for pvc or any kind of fake leather.

If it's a well-made, sturdy piece that will last for years then it'll pay for itself over and over

If you're not comfortable paying that much for a bag would you wait until the sales?? If it's a popular colour it might be gone but chances are it could still be there :)

I don't think that's too much for a bag you love and will use a lot. It should last a long time. I think you may regret not getting it if you don't, sounds like you really love it.

I'd think 160 is quite cheap for a bag. 300 would be about the starting price for a good leather bag

Check out this bargain alert for M+S http://m.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=97462851#post97462851

Combining the 20% off and the €10 first time discount could bring the bag down to €118

Economists have done research to calculate the ideal price for a designer bag, it's something like 350 euro - expensive enough that it seems exclusive enough for the brand, but cheap enough that they can make money off it, and be attractive to the growing middle class in countries like China. I'll dig out a link when I'm on my pc.

The most recent one I bought was this one. Its gorgeous and sustainably and fairly produced leather. I probably should have bought the maxi size though for 200 quid. the midi is a bit small

This is where I like to go on Christmas Eve when I'm in the Netherlands, Bijenkorf, all designers under one roof and on sale :D

Depends on how much I'm earning. If I had a good secure job with a decent salary, I'd spend a few hundred for a good quality leather bag. Right now, I don't, so I buy second hand leather bags for <50 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,101 ✭✭✭bscm

Mainland Europe has some great leather outlets. There's loads of shops around Italy that sell really nice leather bags for under 100 euro.

As for how much I spend... I have been guilty of paying 200-250 euro for leather bags, both are branded/designer, but decent quality. The first, I probably wouldn't use these days as I bought it back when I was 17 or so. I did pick up a 13/14 inch leather satchel in Italy for 70 euro though.

Now that I'm earning, I'm more tempted to put money into things that will last. Before, I'd just buy something on sale or that was in my price range. Now that I can, I'd like to invest in a small number of pieces that'll last a while, rather than pay 30 quid here and there for stuff that'll probably break within a year. I still wouldn't pass up a bargain, but I wouldn't flinch at spending over 100 on a decent bag if I liked it and could tell the quality was worth the price.

I don't think the price of the bag you describe OP is unrealistic if you like the bag. Go for it. If you like buy it and post us a pic ! :-P Bag porn! :-)

If you like it buy it!

I'm not an expensive bag person - I'd find it very, very tough to spend more than around £70-100 on a bag.

If you really like it you prob won't regret it. Money will come by again.

That's what credit card debts are made of.

I like bags but not enough to spend over the odds for them. Usually I buy leather and spend up to 200 euro. I try to buy bags that will work with different outfits because I rarely swap them. I rarely impulse buy and I would spend more on classic shapes and colours than on more individual designs.

If I could afford it, I would probably only buy handbags that were of good quality. I have broken so many days after buying them.

Someone told me a funny story about heels in Korea. In TV soaps they are always breaking as part of the story line! And she always wondered why and thought it was cheesy. That was until her shoes from here ran out and she had buy them there from then on and apparantly they are always breaking.

I have spent a lot on bags over the years. I still love all of them and wear them regularly. The most I have spent was when I bought a Chanel 2.55. I saved for years to get it. If I had the money I'd buy an Hermes Kelly bag. I'm all about quality over quantity when it comes to accessories, and this is spreading into my clothes buying as well. I find the better quality stuff is cheaper in the long run.

Thaaaaat's a leettle too much for me! I could do 200 and feel good ... 400 sure. Ten grand erm no!

But fair play if you saved for years etc.

Maybe If I was a billionaire

I just couldn't justify spending a lot of money on something that I could spend very little on. For me a bag is functional, a bag for a tenner does just as good a job as a more expensive one.

In saying that I have on occasion spent close to 200 euro on a bag but actually in retrospect I think it was a waste of money because I hardly ever used it, I was afraid to bring it out to pubs or clubs in case it was stolen or damaged so it ended up being something I looked at but rarely used! Same thing happened with a beautiful expensive white suede winter coat I splurged on one year.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm simply not an expensive bag or clothes person. I'm just not that materialistic. I get as much joy out of a cute Penneys bag as I do out of an expensive designer bag. In fact I probably prefer the Penneys bag cos it doesn't matter if it gets damaged, breaks, has stuff spilled on it, etc..

Course these days I rarely have the spare cash for a cheap new bag let alone an expensive one!

But if you've got the money and that's what you're into then go for it and enjoy!

I would buy a MK bag, but it would be a once off thing. For a normal everyday bag, it can be anything from €10-€50, nothing too expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

The most I've ever spent was about €55. That's on the bag I am currently using which I have had for about a year. It's not in great condition now though!

Would like a nice bag that is good quality. Going to put away €50 a week until Christmas and then treat myself :)

I won a voucher a few years back for a high end store and bought a handbag. I would never have spent my own money but in hindsight it's probably paid for itself. I've had it ten years and never bought another bag and it still looks as good as new. I used to buy two or three bags a year before. I see a good bag as an investment piece, look after it and it will last a lifetime.

The problem with M&S is the sterling:euro exchange rate. Check out the price of the bag in Sterling, put the price into XE.COM and see how the sterling price translates into euro. If it is significantly more I'd advise you to wait for the sales.

I'm all for paying for quality - a bag that will last well through daily use and abuse :D and won't fall to bits in a few months. I don't agree with buying a bag for the designer label or for the bit of metal hanging out of it letting everyone know where you've bought it.

I have my eye on a lovely bag at the moment that's €80. It's leather, a classic style, good quality for the proce and very much "my bag" (geddit? ;-)) but not sure if I can bring myself to spend that much on it...

Paid about E400 for a Guess bag a few years ago, that's probably the highest I'd go.

I'm one of these everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-ers when it comes to handbags so tend to go for storage rather than stylish and dainty. "It's not a real bag if ya can't fit into it" :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,736 ✭✭✭✭kylith

Not a handbag, but I did once spend £300 on a suede coat back in my college days. I was worried about the expense at first but by the time it was unwearable I'd had it about 5 years and it was In constant use between October and March.

    Quality definitely pays for itself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,449 ✭✭✭✭pwurple

I guess it's down to how much you use it. If you use something a lot, I think it makes sense to get a quality one. What value you put on that is down to your own disposable income.

For me, I couldn't justify it, because I barely use then. I have a laptop case most of the time for work, and at the weekend if we are out on the beach or in the woods it's a backpack. If I'm out with the kids I stuff everything into the pouches on the buggy. I get very little use from a regular handbag, maybe a few hours a week. For evenings I use a sparkly clutch from pennies or similar.

I think I might be getting it for Christmas after I 'accidentally' showed it to my husband.

I cant link it, but it is a Berkley leather backpack if any one wants to have look and I prefer the tan rather than the black although the black is nice as well.

I really like bags so I would spend more on them than on anything else. The most expensive bag that I own now is a Mulberry Bayswater which was about €1,600. I take really good care of it and it just looks better the longer I own it. I would like to buy a Chanel bag and that will probably be my biggest bag purchase.

I know some people will think I'm mad but I save and then treat myself. The resale value is pretty good on certain designers so I keep that in mind and I like the idea of having something special to pass on to my daughter (if she is into bags too, of course). I'm not a big spender on clothes or shoes so I guess it evens out.

I have to admit that I am a handbag and shoe nut, so I've spent a lot on them over the years. The most I've spent on one bag is €850 on a Chloe Marcie Saddle bag but I've used it nearly every day since so it's more than earned its keep!

I'm not a bag snob though and have plenty from New Look, Penneys, River Island etc., for me its more about the right bag for the outfit rather than the label.

I have a couple of dirt cheap designer copies that I picked up in Asia too and no-one can tell the difference from real thing, so I'm happy to let people think that they're real :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,000 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Im going to be a bah humbug here but I'm sure it's allowed lol.

Bags are functional or for dressing up.

If functional, they are going to be ruined in the rain, snow, on the train etc. If they are dressy they can be bought very inexpensively and changed to suit the outfit.

I cannot understand the obsession with paying loadsa dough for a bag that NO ONE notices at all (well maybe you do but that's all!).

I'd rather go on a weekend break somewhere nice here, or abroad for the money some want to spend on a flippin BAG, omg.

But each to their own I guess, and we all spend our money the way we want, that gives us pleasure.

    Enjoy.

I can't wear most bags because of my back and shoulders so whatever I use has to be very light. I love long champ as they're really light. I've got 2 which I alternate between. I think they cost €120 each. If love another one and I might put it on the list for my birthday. I've a couple of evening bags which cost €200. I don't use them very often but I love having them there for special occasions.

I think I bought a bag in tkmax for €250 before my first child was born. That was the most I've ever spent. I've got on jaeger bag that cost about €150 it I can't really use it anymore as its a shoulder carry one

I paid €1,200 for a handbag two years ago. I chose to pay for it instead of a holiday that year. I always feel well dressed when I have it and know that it is genuine and not an imitation.
I don't usually pay more than €250. Buy the best that you can afford.
