Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Where to get full vitamin and blood test

    Hi,

Can someone please tell me where I could get a full vitamin and blood test carried out?

I looked into my previous GP doing a blood test, but they said that they won't do it unless they have reason to do it.

....as he is no longer my GP, I'd like to know where I could get these tests done.

I find it hard to believe that you cannot pay to get these tests carried, surely you don't have to wait until you're sick to get these, is that right?

I'd really appreciate some places to get these tests done, so I know my diet is correct, etc.

    Thanks for any feedback,
    Sweg.

Pretty much any GP will do it for you.

    Thanks for the response.

I found this company just now: www.privatebloodtests.ie

Has anybody had any experience with them?

Also, I wouldn't want just a standard test, I think I have a fairly weak immune system so I'd like to have as much tested as possible (vitamins and bloods, and something else that I might have missed out on?)

A GP will do it. I get it done every 12-18 months...a full blood count, electrolytes, cholesterol, glucose, liver and kidney function. I think the only vitamins they can check for is B12 and D but open to correction on that.

If you go to GP and explain your concerns, they should help you

out of curiosity what does your Vit D look like? are you getting it from food or do you try to get it from the Sun when available. Funny thing I had an app on the phone which told me when the times to get the perfect 30 minutes were , around the 20th of Aug it said sorry not until next April :pac:

    I take 10000 IU a Day.
One of the UK hospitals does vitamin d for £29.
They send you a kit and you return it to them.
    They then email the results.
It requires 4 drops of blood.

Think it's the city assay in Birmingham

I can't remember to be honest. I do take a supplement, try get some from food. Not as easy to get it from sun when you're inside for most of the day :)

Interesting, was making sure I got out in the sun this year, but the winter can be long.

Any GP will be able to request standard blood tests that can include full blood count, iron, kidney profile, liver profile, cholesterol etc. Vitamins B12 and D are also routine tests. The vast majority of Irish people are deficient in vitamin D so a supplement might be worth trying.

More specialised tests require analysis in a referral lab and would cost a lot more money.

So I would agree with your GP for not requesting x,y and z on a hunch you have a weak immune system. A huge cost to the healthcare system is GPs requesting everything under the sun when there is no need.

Can do more, I can't remember what exactly I had in the last test but I had things like Calcium etc. I did ask for more than standard. Maybe as my GP didn't do the test themselves, they refer you to Mater Hospital.

A tip for speeding up an appointment there is you can book it online before even going to your GP as it has a few weeks waiting list AFAIK.

Yeah there are other tests they can do but discussed those and outlined why wasn't necessary. I only really do it on account of a family member having pancreatic cancer, the symptoms of which show themselves when it's too late so it's probably just...'paranoia' is too strong...maybe peace of mind

Thanks everyone for the responses, they've been informative.

I think I'm going to go to a GP and just explain the situation, and see how much more than a standard test they can give me.

I've also thought about consulting a nutritionist, to make sure I'm on a well balanced diet. Is there tests that they can do also?

And should I get my diet sorted before going to the GP?

Also, my father has type 2 diabetes, and my uncle also did, which may mean I need to get some other things checked?
