Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. The new oculus is going to be using a mobile processor (the same processor as the S8) so it's hard to see how it's going to be as good as a rift. The rift used a PC's graphics card , I can't see the Quest having similar hardware.

I don't think they plan to make it as good as the Rift as they have always said that is the premium level market.

It's supposed to be a middle-ground between the Go and the Rift.

Portable VR, with 6DoF and no cables, but the software will obviously need to be optimised for the device, as they say Robo Recall will be available for it, so I'd wager it will be a slimmed down version.

Saying that though, the possibilities of literally being able to run around the VR world is an amazing prospect

Interesting to note that it's Oculus Go Walmart is using for their massive (1 million employees) VR training programme -

    Hi,

I'm interested in trying out VR. Only ever tried a samsung headset with a crap Iphone inserted. Don't have money or a beefy enough PC for the Rift.

Would the GO be worth the money for things like watching netflix, you tube etc and some casual gaming ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,862 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

    Yup it's pretty fantastic

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭Conba

Worth noting that YouTubeVR is available for Oculus Go now. If you live in an area of poor broadband, as do I, you'll appreciate the ability to download (higher quality) videos for offline playback.

is that only with a subscription or you can download with the free version?

    Haven't tried it yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭Conba

Oops, sorry, I should have specified that's with the subscription. Well worth paying for me or else I'd have to give up on 360 / 180 video entirely.

well yeah I've got ****loads of Three credit to use up.

I don't watch videos on my phone that much so YouTube premium didn't make sense for me, but it might be good for Go usage and can pay for it using my credit.

So bit the bullet and have a GO on the way. Looking forward to giving it a whirl. Any tips or tricks on how to get the best out of it ? My PC is ok for my demanding gaming needs, i'm kinda looking at it as a more immersive media tool. Netflix, youtube etc. and the odd casual game. Any apps I need to know about ?

    Thanks.

Wander is brilliant. Essentially like travelling the planet from the comfort of your couch.

A great game that shows off the visual capabilities is Daedalus, really enjoyed that one. Dreadhalls is also superb, though not for the graphics. There's a free demo you can try. Play it on a swivel chair for the ultimate experience.

    Ultrawings is also excellent.

Skybox is my personal favourite video player as it can stream content from your PC, but there are other options coming along.

Also whatever your thoughts are on pr0n, it really does need to be experienced ;) ... SKybox is great for that too.

Thanks for the recommendations. I like the idea of Wander .Have a swivel chair ! As for the pr0n I wouldn't be at all at all at all interested in the likes of that........at all at all. ;-)

I gave it a go. It had to be done. It's weird. At one point a woman aggressively shoved her breasts at the camera and I found myself leaning back thinking they were going to hit me.

There's a few sites where you can stream it from. One of the sites even had female centric porn. As in you are in the womans place.

Incidentally, I wrote an assignment on porn in college. It was for marketing. The porn industry is always the first to hop on new technology. Within a few years of the camera being invented they were selling nude photo's. Porn is even part of the reason that VHS beat betamax and pornographers created the first video libraries where you could rent video's. They created the first online checkout and the first livestream on the web.

    Hey lads and lasses,

Just looking for a bit of advice. I’m looking for Xmas present ideas for my brother, and he really loved his PSVR.

Is there really much point getting a Go if he already has the PSVR? The obvious difference is the mobility, but with way less controls for games? What’s the selection of games like?

    Thanks :)

I have both and use both interchangeably. Different types of games and Go is better for video watching etc, so lots of scope to use both at different times.

Go is also portable so handy for when he's away and misses his VR fix.

Ok considering getting the GO, mainly for movies and the odd novelty app for a laugh like rollercoasters or whatever. I have a PC strong enough for a rift but havent seen many games id like to play. Resident evil 7 maybe is all but ive already played that, so cant justify getting the rift for proper gaming.

SO, im wondering is the Oculus Go really good for movies? I'm basically trying to replicate cinema experiences, Like i really want to watch Interstellar again but want it to be as close to my experience watching it in IMAX or a good cinema. I'm looking to be immersed basically and am wondering would the Go be able to do this?

Or Avatar in 3D also, looking for the similar immersion to IMAX 3D, is the 3D effects good on the Go?

I have pretty much no expereince with VR headsets... Thinking about it i dont even think ive ever put one on

Anyway, any insight would be Ace! :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,316 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

I found it great for movies although you'd want to plug in headphones. Also battery is about 2 hours. I get around that by popping a powerbank in my pocket.

I had an 11 hour flight from the Us a couple of weeks ago. Night time flight, plane half empty. I popped on the headset with noise cancelling headphones and watched a movie. I actually watched Black Panther on it for the first time and it was great.

I'd never tried VR before I bought it and it was great. My favorite part isn't the games, it's all the VR experiences/movies like swimming with sharks or being on the space station.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,058 ✭✭✭Doge

Resident Evil 7 is only available in VR on the PSVR anyway so you won't be losing out, well apart from all the other great games and experiences in the Rift. :o

Maybe MrCheez can fill you in on the best play to play 3D Blu-ray rips, not sure if they can be streamed over the network on the Go yet so it might be worth I getting the premium model with more storage.

You can drag and drop onto the Go, no?

    Yes you can

I stream from my PC onto the GO. Either share out a folder or use an app like Skybox. Shybox is easy to use. Just install it on your PC and headset. On your pc chose the folder the movies are in. Then anytime you want to play one, go to they skybox app on your headset and chose airplay.

There's loads of other apps and there's even a built in cinema app. They all work by either playing movies you store locally or ones you share out on your computer.

Nice! So i can stream everything? is there any need to get the 64gb version or is 32gb plenty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,862 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Yeah defo go for the higher storage option if you can. Bear in mind the 32GB model only has around 22-23GB of usable storage space.

The 64GB has about 54GB of usable space.

You may think you'll just stream, but it's so handy to have some flicks ready to play wherever you go or without turning on your PC.

Also a lot of games/apps take up 1-2GB so just handy not having to worry about storage.

Saying that though, my movies are 11GB (it makes a big difference when playing through the Go compared to a YiFy 3GB rip) so I often run out of space on my 64GB!

and just to add, you can get rips which are SBS. This is a 3d format. So when you watch the movie it's like you're in the cinema watching a 3D movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,058 ✭✭✭Doge

SBS means Side By side in that both halfs of the screen that make up the stereoscopic 3d image are to the left and right of each other.

OU stands for over under, in that the 2 halfs are above and below each other.

You usually have to specify which type the file is before playback.

    Although OU isn't as common.

Try the native oculus one. From a functional standpoint they're all similar, the main difference is the interface and menus. Skybox is probably the best overall I've used but if the one that comes with the oculus is good for you, then there's no need to buy another.

The big difference I find with skybox over the native app is that I can sort fles by date/size etc on skybox. The native app just sorts alphabetically.

Ordered a 64gb Go last thursday from Littlewoods with a delivery date of next Monday. After reading a lot of bad reviews about Littlewoods and their couriers (after ordering of course ) I was convinced it would be lost in the ether so was pleasantly surprised when it turned up today ahead of time.

Am busy tonight but happen to have a day off tomorrow so looking forward to trying it out. Need to update my iOS for the app but should be good to go then. My first proper look into VR i guess besides a cheap headset and old iphone that didn't impress.

I only went with Littlewoods at the time because Argos had only the 32gb version. Now they seem to have 64gb. Littlewoods 64gb 329euros. Argos 64gb 299Euros.

    Post impressions in a bit.

Ok. Officially impressed. I was always skeptical of "Oh its like watching on a cinema screen". I figured no way, how could that be. Now I get it !

Brilliant bit of kit especially for the price. Can't wait to delve in more.

I'm not into gaming too much anymore and have neither the room space or the budget for a Rift so the GO is perfect for the likes of me.

If you're like me and want to dip your toe into VR but are a bit wary Trust me go for it. Maybe the novelty will wear off in a bit but for the price its perfect.

So easy to set up and get started as well.

    Love it/10

Get one of these as it's the best controller to use with your Go and many games depend on a normal controller than the Go controller.

Picked one of the 64GB versions up for ~€246 from amazon there on the 22nd of December.

    Battery life is woeful.
I even stick in a 2,000 mah charger into the side of it while I'm using it, to make it last longer :P

    Any tips?
