It certainly does look like a polar low, both on sat and on models. The 0.05 km WRF shows a distinct warm core.

Pretty intense looking cell moving into the N Mayo coast, could help trigger some lightning there. Already a number of strikes over Donegal/Leitrim area.

The center also has a small dry core, not sure what this means - if it is to mean anything at all.

    Lightning in Castlebar now

The wind has picked up here outside Newport with some very strong gusts, but no signs of lightning.
We're only about 7 miles from Castlebar so seems odd that I haven't seen anything.

We actually heard that, was it on the Newport side by any chance?
Had a big flash, lit up the entire house and then a rattle of thunder that I thought wouldn't end.

Get ready in Dublin region, this looks to be headed past you around midnight to 0200h and there could be some vicious gusts in exposed locations (I would think along coast near Drogheda to Bray, also anywhere a bit higher up on the west side of the Dublin-Wicklow mountains). M2 buoy should make for interesting obs. I have mentioned on Net-weather that I am concerned about severe wind gusts in southwest Wales around 0300h (in their case, 160 km/hr possible). Will say for now peak gusts about 120, possibly 130 near Dublin. Won't last very long, maybe 2-3h.

Getting some solid gusts here(Nrth Meath/cavan)atm. Lashings of rain to wash away the snow from today :(

Edit: Roof shaker of a gust just now, strongest so far this year

Living in this house 7 years & I have never heard the creaks it's making in these fierce gusts we are having right now! Holy moly!! Wasn't expecting this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,100 ✭✭✭ectoraige

What's the expected lifetime of this, I see Met Eireann's advisory is valid to midnight and talks of gusts "early tonight". When should the winds subside below gale-force on the West coast?

  • Registered Users Posts: 219 ✭✭ThaitaniumM

Fierce winds here too  Even tho we're not in any of the wind warnings on Met.ie

Just got worse here, pretty strong gusts now under those showers...what ever about those red warnings we had for Storm Rachel :P

the light went off for 5 seconds after a gust at 8pm in sligo town (didnt even go off last year)

    i measured 58 knots yesterday

might have touched 60 knots today but broke weather station so ill leave it to mountainy man or someone

Well the gusts have dropped a notch here in Newport, Mayo. Some of the gust were surprisingly strong and sustained, coupled with heavy rain made this seem like the worst event since we moved here a year and a half ago.
When I went to the shed I noticed that the wall plate has moved about 2" where it was joined, full inspection tomorrow.

Dead calm here now in South Donegal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,586 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Low is now just southwest of Isle of Man heading for a scrape over Aberdaron and a second Welsh landfall in Cardigan Bay. Predicting peak winds around Dublin in next hour, Wicklow coast around 0100-0200h. Should rapidly let up in many other regions but with occasional gusts to about 90 km/hr -- Saturday now also looking very windy at times.

    Ya I'm alive :)
Had a high gust of 40.3 mph (I don't do knots, not a sailor:P) I tend not to get extremes of wind here(thankfully) not sure why as am pretty exposed. I do get the snow which is more important lol. Been a bit of a thaw and snow has slumped down to about 2 inches and have had the usual avalanche from the roof, temp is currently 2.8C was 4.0C at 22.15pm dew points remained sub zero throughout.
