Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I just find all this so divisive. It's achieving the opposite of what it hopes to achieve. It's reducing everyone to their ethnicity, their colour, as if that's all we are.

Exactly, true equality means that the race of actors/people to hire is as meaningful as hair colour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Padre_Pio

    Here the criteria.
You need to two to get nominated:

    1. On-screen acting and storylines, "including at least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors is from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group"
    2. Creative leadership positions, departmental heads and crew composition
    3. Paid apprenticeships, internships and training
    4. Audience development, from publicity and marketing to distribution

My issue is these are so vague as to be meaningless. Underrepresented racial or ethnic group? Considering most Hollywood actors are American, then would an Irishman tick the box here?
So then it's a pointless exercise and Twitter will use it as a stick to beat the Academy with.

Oh now you need at least two black actors, and Naomi Harris black, not Beyonce black.

2+2 is always 4. The cartoon thinks it's being smart, but isn't. 10 in base 4 is this many - .... - not this many - .......... - so the fundamental mathematical law remains; two plus two is four. Just because you've changed to base 4 doesn't alter the basic maths.

It is true that two apples plus two oranges don't equal four apples - but again, maths is always clear that you have to add like to like. 20 + 2 doesn't equal 4 because you want to add the two 2s together. One is two tens and one is two units so they can't be added together. Two apples plus two oranges does give four pieces of fruit, however.

I know it's only a handful of nuts on the internet, but if the cartoon is wrong, there's no point you saying it's right.

So yes, two plus two equals four is always true. You could in fact define four as being two plus two. If you want to give "four" a different name - such as 10 in base 4 - then fine, but that's just changing names, not the underlying facts. You may as well say that 2+2 = Ceathar, and so therefore isn't always equal to 4.

For sure, that's the whole basis of the mad theory released into the wild - change definitions of facts to fit the political, ideological imperative hence magically a male is a female, a female is a male, we're all clownfish blah blah

So come on AH, even though this batsh1t, controlling insanity has escaped unis into some parts of the real world with real consequences and is a present danger, some of it is so mentally deluded it's worth recording for the lol's at least.

Hollywood has gone to crap this last decade or so, now it looks like it going to get even worse.

Screw em. TV is where it's at. While US films have been getting worse and worse, on demand TV has been getting better and better.

I had a friend who has gone off the woke deep end say something similar lately. She said “I don’t agree with gender reveal parties because that might not be how the child identifies”.

My response was “But even if the baby identities differently, what does it matter? They’re not aware of the party at the time it’s happening. They’re not going to get offended about something they had no awareness of.” That stumped her.

I was pretty blunt but the conversation happened at the end of a very long hospital visit she had accompanied me on and I was in no humour for listening to hand-wringing about such a non-issue.

It amazes if not shocks me the number of ppl who think the new Oscars rules are no big deal.

It doesn't matter what way you look at it the implication is that (to make an extreme case to show an obvious point) that the worst movie of the year could get the best movie award and the actual best movie not even a mention.

They could have posted that story any other time of the year but decided to go with today.

Could happen, there are people who want it to happen. If I'm running a business my thoughts and intention as I’ve said before to hire the best and most suitable candidate for the job for the benefit of the business, the existing staff and the customers, especially the customers.

I couldn’t give two flying rich tea biscuits if your accent is from Navan or Nairobi, Bayside or Beirut, I’m hiring a reliable performer, reliable personality with good solid verifiable references. I don’t care what you look like, sound like, what color your passport or face is, good enough, you’ll get hired, good enough but others better, it’s “ thanks for applying but sorry, can we contact you if a position becomes vacant in future?”

You owe every candidate and customers as well as every existing member of staff to hire the best candidate. Decided by what they say, prove, references etc... NOT the color of a passport.

    Politicians are liars by nature,

is it that younger people can't see that?

Is that why they get so angry? We took it for granted years ago, so I think a class on lying as a profession = politics might be an option.

Knew him a tiny bit years ago as I worked in the same place as him. Seemed sound back then but I would probably have been impressed by that critical theory stuff back then too (although not to the extent of deeming Friends to deserve all those labels).

Saw him comment to a Waterford Whispers item one time that it was demonising the working class. How about extremely middle class people let working class people speak for themselves - they don't need a saviour.

I never even bother checking Oscar awards anyway, 2 of the greatest films ever made - The Prestige and Interstellar didn't get any mention.

Slammed by "critics" too .... actually is a good sign at this stage, look at Joker and the difference between audience scores and critics.

It's the metric I use nowadays.

Not the worst imo. Newsthump though. Unfollowed them when they put up a thing about a man complaining about the child sex abuse rings in England (in the immediate aftermath of yet another one being revealed) but not complaining about catholic priests who have abused.

Imagine taking that away rather than the actual abuse. And sleeping soundly at night. Truly disgusting.
