Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

For years I've been running a big 29" silver flat screen Sony Trintron CRT but this weekend I took out a nice B&O BeoVision 1 (BV1) from storage to give a it a go. It's smaller at 26" but it looks very unique on a motorised stand with a curved tinted glass in front of the tube. A lot nicer looking than the 00's style silver Trinitron. Art Deco?

    503614.jpg

My first impressions running were WOW this thing looks slick. There is something about the Trintron that makes me feel like I can notice screen refreshing but this BV1 is so smooth almost like it's 100Hz or higher resolution but it's not. Maybe the smaller screen is the reason?

The sound quality is super too.

But then I noticed the image was shifted to the left a little. Hard to see on some games but more obvious on others.

    503616.jpg

I searched the net for a while and eventually found a guide that showed the service menu key combination (0 0 GO). It turns out this thing has more geometry options than most arcade monitors

    503617.jpg

I'm not sure what to do now with the 29" Sony beast because after a couple of hours of multi player chu chu rocket I have to say this is going to be the new main CRT.

    Speaking of ratios...

Picked up a Dell 2001FP LCD monitor on Adverts (he's got a second one for sale as well), its a 20" 4:3 but supports 15KHz and 31KHz inputs.
Primarily got it for use with my Amiga and Archimedes computers as they do switch between 15K and 31K depending on what resolution and screen mode you're in. But it should work with consoles as well, interesting to see how it scales 240p input..

Thanks for the tip on this. I tested one out and it handles composite and svideo 15k fine but rgb over a vga cable says "signal not compatible". I'm using the vga out port on a gscart switch. Do you know if it takes 15khz rgb? Not much info online about this monitor.

Check the mfg date on it, anything up to June 2005 should support 15KHz, after that Dell used a different pcb supplier and 15KHz was dropped.

Gorgeous! I always used wanted to try and give one of them a go. They look super classy.

They use a shadow mask rather than Trinitron aperture grille which will make the scanlines look far smaller. That with the smaller screen size might make it look a bit higher res alright, especially if it's not what you're used to seeing.

That RGB picture shift is annoying isn't it? Had happened on every commercial set I've ever had. Have to be carful adjusting it as some consoles shift over further than others so you've to find a sweet spot for them all.

Usually caused by the Sync signal being delayed compared to the RGB signals, either on the Sync generation on the console or on the TV side if it has to be pulled from the composite video.
Annoying alright, particularly if there is no easy way to adjust this on the TV, must investigate a bit more and see if its 'fixable', might be possible to buffer the RGB signals to get the timing right.

Did a bit of googling as I didn't realise that's what the cause was. Apparently you can actually add a 10k pot to the sync line and use that to shift the image.

Be careful with them! They can be pretty dodgy.

I had one myself for a long time and it did do the trick, just don't keep it switched on for very long as it can break easily. (Mine did)

I've also heard stories about them catching fire.

I remember us talking about them before actually......I'll follow the usual wish.com rules for it. *Just imagine it's activity trying to kill you* so handle with Care

I messaged that guy too. I need one though so for €13 it will do the 9 active monitors I have going hopefully

You can make one if you are stuck.
You need the degauss coil from an old arcade CRT,a 100watt incandescent light bulb and a single gang light switch ........

Any of you guys tried streaming media to your CRTs?

Trying to figure out a good solution to get 4:3 streaming content displaying correctly. (So I can watch the likes of TNG and DS9 in full screen 4:3 without being pillarboxed)

Thought the WiiU would work, but unfortunately it locks the likes of netflix to 16:9 WITH pillarboxes, so your picture is a tiny square in the middle of the screen.

Going to try a Xbox 360 next. Just remembered they do RGB scart out and if I remember correctly, you can adjust the video to fit a 4:3 screen.

Lol - I have plenty of laserdiscs and 3 players (2 bought for backup when the market was dead a good few years ago).
They dont get used these days, but I will be keeping them and the players are workinf. The NTSC box sets, SEs etc are such nice artifacts.

Need to get a player myself. They are mental money though so I'll hang on for the next recession.

Mostly been getting 80s and 90s action films myself.

Coming very close to a complete JCVD laserdisc collection actually

Jayus have none of ye heard of Netflix :) (or bittorrent)

Chucked all my vhs tapes a while ago getting ready for a house move and absolutely don't regret it - unlike when I got rid of a heap of big box PC games :(

I went a bit mad recently with the VHS collecting. To be honest I wanted to cut back on spending money collecting stuff so it scratches that itch going after VHS. Most I got for free. I have about 800 in my parents attic ! I kept the ones I like out though.

Original XBOX with XBMC should do it, can stream from a network share or DLNA like Plex. You'd need to have transcode everything to MPEG4/XVID or let Plex do it on the fly but would be a nice experiment anyway.

Check this out, some lad did that thing we were discussing ages ago where he used a videowall processor (which splits one image across multiple CRTs) in conjuction with an N64, to give everyone in a four player game their own tv.

Bit blurry, but interesting to see nonetheless!

finally got this 9inch Kortek monitor fixed and back running. Full recap and, missing parts, cold solder joints and a vertical collapse...and some shorted pins on one of the IC due to some unnamed Frenchman shoddy soldering work when replacing the Vertical deflection IC .
All back up and running now though. Been struggling with this one for weeks.
There's something immensely satisfying about getting these things to run again

Finally achieved something this evening that I've been wracking my head over for ages, can't believe the answer was under my nose the whole time!

Streaming 4:3 content in it's correct full screen aspect ratio to a CRT - mainly for Netflix.

Wii no longer supports Netflix unfortunately.
WiiU does analogue out and you can get it going, but is locked to 16:9 so useless.

Got a 360 scart cable in the post today and hooked it all up. Took me an age to get it going, console had to do a million updates to get on to Live and then had issues with two step authentication. Even had to climb up into the attic to find my controller and when I did the battery compartment was missing, so I had to wedge in two AA batteries with some copper coins.

Got there in the end though and my god is it glorious! :D

Pictures don't do it justice, but trust me, it's worth doing! There's loads of 4:3 content on Netflix and the RGB signal is razor sharp. Animation looks amazing.

Currently on a bit of a hunt for a CRT... will probably sound mental but...!

I grew up with a 1986 Mitsubishi 20 inch TV and VCR in the living room. It had a smoked glass bezel over the screen and looked really nice.

I've worked out what the VCR was (a Mitsubishi HS-339UR) but can't figure out the TV at all!

Had a bit of luck when I realised recently that Mitsubishi and NEC are the same company when it comes to displays, so found a few CRTs under the NEC brand that look very similar to it.

Case and bezel look the same here (case was grey on my one though) but the buttons are completely different.

    1fd421ecd14c47818ecf8b10192fe023.jpg

Did find one Mitsubishi that looks kind of similar, looks like a smaller, cheaper model (looks like the model number is 1416PS?)

    https://sg.carousell.com/p/mitsubishi-colour-tv-63184413/

If any of you happen to see something that looks similar to this, either in person or online, give me a shout!
