I warned you all about Hitler 6 years ago, but would ye listen? No! Look at the destruction and death because of him.

WW2 was only a wee skirmish. Nothing like WW1. Now that was a real war. The young folk are too soft these days, they don't know what real hardship is.

I see those funny little Japanese men are trying to make cars now. What a joke - as if people will trade in their tried and trusted British Leylands for Nipmobiles.

Conspiracy Theories of special camps where they send people to die would be laughed at because the conspirators wouldn't be able to provide exact location or what gas was used.

Nobody thought that at the time though. Suspicion towards the Russians was very high from the start, only the early massive German victories and the fear of them winning got the other allies into bed with the Soviets. If Hitler hadn't been so hellbent on destroying communism and invading Russia(which the allies would have agreed with among themselves for the most part as they were all staunchly anti commie) Britain would likely have had to come to the we surrender/negotiation table with Germany. In Hitler's ideal world the British and him would have come to the arrangement of leaving the Germans alone in Europe, Germany would respect the British empire(which Hitler admired) and he would be free to crush Bolshevism and the Jews forging their own empire in the east.

When the war in Europe ended there was a view among many high up to continue fighting only this time the Soviets and push them back to their pre war borders. There was even some talk of rearming what was left of the German army to do it. General Patton for one was pretty open about his hositility and concerns over the Soviets, even stating that "maybe we've been fighting the wrong enemy" just after the Germans surrendered.

The British public knew Churchill was the man for the job in war, but too old style landed gentry conservative for peace. They were tired of war and wanted a new more equitable Britain/England for them and their kids. One thing that Hitler did do though unintentionally as he was imperial by nature was in trying to start his German empire he effectively destroyed the other European empires in the process. They all unravelled after WW2 and the European superpowers came to be replaced by the US and USSR.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Especially since the US didn't know how long they'd have a monopoly on atomic weapons so it was now or never.
