High winds and heavy rain in places this week (Discussion Thread)

Windy here in Dublin 4. Nothing to crazy. Probably about strong enough to blow over a wheelie bin and blow off your momas hat while she picks up said wheelie bin.

On a boat in the Celtic Sea at the moment - not fun! Wind speed pretty much consistently at 40 knots in the last couple of hours. Max gust in last 30 mins was 50 knots and I suspect there have been much stronger ones.

To all the landlubbers, be thankful your bed isn't doing a good imitation of a rodeo bull!

Wind speed is still about 25 to 30 knots in the Celtic Sea at the moment, with about 4 metre swells. Ship is rolling up to 15 degrees at times...

It was pretty wild in West Limerick last night. Plenty of objects crashing around the place.

Talking to a chap in Kerry, he was reporting high winds too at his location.

I was unable to get outside so unfortunately can't give any more in terms of an accurate report but it seemed to be a fairly lively but short lived event. No damage locally, not even a tree branch down. Lots of leaves blown off so there will now be less wind loading on tress for any subsequent wind event although the ground saturation levels may lead to possible instability going forward into any following windy weather.

Tonight

Heavy rain will spread northwards tonight with some very heavy falls likely in parts of the south especially. It will become windy also especially in coastal areas and there is a danger of some flooding, especially in coastal areas of the south and southeast. Lowest temperatures of 4 and 9 degrees.


Tomorrow

Widespread rain or heavy showers tomorrow with some thundery downpours in places and a continuing risk of flooding especially in the coastal areas. Top temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees and windy especially around the coasts.

Outlook

There will be further falls of rain on Wednesday night mainly along coastal areas, with some heavy falls along southern and eastern coasts. Temperatures will fall to between 3 and 7 degrees with strong winds along the coasts.

Thursday will be a showery day, with heavy and possibly thundery falls

The worst of the winds will stay offshore due to the track it is forecast to take. GFS and NAE are showing the worst winds at the southeast coast of around 70kph. Much less windy away from the coast. It's one of those ones thats looks more impressive than it really is. In terms of rainfall, NAE is showing 20-30mm in places by 48 hours.

Sitting in work, head down beavering away like the good little worker that I am, when I heard the SEVERE Weather warning on the radio! metaphorically grabbed my coat and headed for the door- weather forum! lol

I am back at college in the evenings and haven't much time to be checking for 'weather' and so this one has crept up on me!!

Hope all the boardsies were well warned, and by the fact that there are 5 pages on this thread, I am taking it that they were, phew!

Weather warning

A deep depression will approach from the southwest tonight and will move up through the country during Wednesday.
A period of heavy rain is expected to move across the country overnight. There could be some intense rainfall during short periods, leading to local flooding.

Brighter weather will develop for Wednesday, but there will be some heavy, prolonged and locally thundery showers at times too.

Southern and eastern coastal counties will have the heaviest of the rain with accumulations of between 30 and 50mm forecast, with values possibly higher in mountainous areas.

But coastal areas of the south and east have the added threat of coastal flooding due to a combination of spring tides, high seas, occasional onshore gales and low pressure values.

I think ya jumped the gun a bit there gbee. Still 2-3 hours away from when the heaviest rain will be over Cork, at least according to the NAE model anyway.

Motorists are advised to drive with care tonight and tomorrow following a warning by Met Éireann of heavy rainfall forecast in the south and east of the country.


Coastal areas will be worst affected

Met Éireann warns of flooding risk

AA Roadwatch has reported flooding in parts of Cork city centre, particularly in the Sharman Crawford Street area.
Earlier flooding along the quays has receded.
Met Éireann is forecasting some very heavy falls in parts of the south overnight, including Waterford and Wexford.
It will be windy, especially in coastal areas, and there is a danger of some flooding.
Flooding is likely in places from the rain, but coastal areas have the added threat of flooding due to low pressure, high seas, high tides and onshore gales at times.
In Dublin, high tides combined with low atmospheric pressure and high winds over the next few days will give rise to high sea levels and possibly large waves.
As a precautionary measure the flood gates on the River Dodder are being deployed.
Dublin City Council will deploy sandbags, if required.

Some very heavy rain just off the Dublin coast at the moment.

The rain is expected to be particularly heavy as it approaches Wicklow/ Dublin area. With some torrential rain between 3 and 8am.

From Met Eireann-Many parts of Munster and Leinster will experience heavy rainfall and strong winds overnight and for much of Wednesday. Totals of 25 to 50mm are expected. Southeast winds of gale or possibly strong gale force occurring in conjunction with times of high tides may cause overtopping in coastal margins.

Looking at the radar track at the moment is the heaviest of this rain heading up along the West coast.

Wind and rain picking up big time in cork.
