Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not bad for the price but not a great phone. Definitely would spend a bit more for something better.
Gearbest have some great deals at the moment but the wait is a pain.

Tried one or two of these 'bargain phones' from Amazon with little success
Had a Doogee X5 and an UMI (can't remember the exact one) - wasn't overly impressed with either. Both slower than my previous phone (A Samsung) and definitely had problems with more than two applications open (particularly the Doogee - it was woeful altogether)

    Best bargain phone around: https://www.geekbuying.com/item/LeTV-LeEco-Le-S3-X626-5-5-Inch-4GB-32GB-Rose-Gold-383811.html?

That looks mighty. What's the battery life like.

Starting to believe the brand names are charging hundreds for phones simply because they can. There's feck all difference between a decent budget phone and a so called high end one, plus all the technology is old at this stage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 99 ✭✭Alan McG

You're completely right. They're now only relying on their brand name to charge the prices they do. (some of) The Chinese brands (Xiaomi and LeEco in particular) really are quality, but less than half the price. The battery life on this particular phone is very good. Of course a 5.5" phone will be worse than a 4.5" one.

I use this website to check out what's good in China/India: https://www.kimovil.com/en/compare-smartphones
They don't like buying crap phones either, and they just don't have the money. So it's a really good guide to what's a smart purchase, and you can see that LeEco are beating the pants off the opposition right now in terms of popularity. This is because they offer the best all-round value.

Only if they catch it! They seem to be hit and miss. Neither of the two phones I ordered got caught, other stuff did.

Geek buying do have warehouses around Europe. These usually cost a little bit more but will arrive sooner and no fear of customs

Can vouch for xiaomi (have this one 165 it cost me https://www.kimovil.com/en/where-to-buy-xiaomi-redmi-4x-global)
other than the camera which is average I think it's an absolute steal for the price and it's a brand I'll be coming back to whenever I'm looking for a new fone.

In fairness the X5 is a €50 phone and for the money it's pretty great, miles ahead of what you'd get here for the same money.

I gave one to each of my parents and they thought they were great.

I had an oukitel k6000 plus and I was disappointed. Battery was no better than regular brand stuff and camera was awful, slow focus times and strange colouring. Got dead pixels with month and sent it back, good riddens

Any suggestions for a decent phone spec wise, that's also water, dust and shock proof with some kind of IP rating and most of all reliable? Would prefer Amazon.co.uk due to their customer service than dealing with a company based in China or an Ebay seller etc. Budget of about €170?

Amazing price! Just know the charging cable is proprietary and costs 20 quid for an extra one. Some people said they took a Stanley knife to a normal cable and it works fine.

Other than that, it's a beast of a phone and seriously low priced right now!

I had one too. Hated it. Mine would get this weird symbol at the top. And when it did the drop down menu would not work and I would have to to a factory reset after about 3 times of this happening I sent it back

opened my S3 when i got home yesterday. i got the below phone.

    [Italy Stock]LeTV LeEco Le S3 X626 5.5 Inch 4G LTE Smartphone Helio X20 Deca Core 4GB RAM 64GB ROM 21.0MP Touch ID - Gold
i made sure it said the phone i chose was in stock, i dont think you could order out of stock models, but i did have to choose a 64gb model when i probably would have gone with the 32gb one if it was there. There is some price difference with the different warehouses maybe 10 euro saved by not using the germany one. check it out before ordering.

Phone was well packaged, came with a 3pin adaptor taped outside the phone box which contained a 2pin plug. so its ready for Irish power sockets.

pretty standard fare looks wise. Thinner than some of the 5.5 blocks but not exeptionally so.

its a 5.5 in screen and it looks good. powered it on, ran through the wizard , but as its not for my daily use, its for one of the kids, i didnt really get to put it through its paces, wont be installing apps or even using fingerprint sensor etc myself.

As it wont be given out till next month - i wont be able to really form more of an opinion, but so far it is as advertised with the fastest delivery ive ever had from any E-tailer. i ordered at 8.34 am on the 16th and it was delivered at 9.30 am on the 17th by DHL.

Bought three separate S3's through this seller and none were stopped by customs:
    http://s.aliexpress.com/3qy6FZj2

Also, they've always arrived within 2 weeks, suggesting they've got an EU warehouse. Would seriously recommend.

Geekbuying have a few EU Warehouses, you can use the menu on the left to see them.

any recs for a cheapo 'festival' smartphone? around 50 quid and available within the next week or so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,513 ✭✭✭digitaldr

Recently got a Xiaomi Mi A1 64gb version, from Eglobalcentral.eu took about 10 days to arrive and shipped via London. Great phone - stock Android, snapdragon processor, good FHD screen, reasonable camera, dual sim/microSD and fast fingerprint reader. What's not to like apart from old style chin/forehead. A lot of lesser Chinese manufacturers are jumping on the 18:9 bandwagon by chucking a new screen onto old crappy internals and software. In contrast Xiaomi Mi 6x have launched the in China,India etc. Based on past experience this will probably form the basis of a stock Android Mi A2 but only time will tell and it's likely to be significantly more expensive than the A1.

Assuming that a festival phone is something that you don't mind losing, have a look at power city and Argos for ideas

    Power city 3G 3310 50euro (no WiFi)
    https://powercity.ie/product/606259

    Argos 4" Alba 65euro
    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/7239135/c_1/1|category_root|Office%252C%2BPCs%2Band%2Bphones|14418968/c_2/3|50000541|Mobile%2Bphones%2Band%2Baccessories|50000542/c_3/4|cat_50000542|SIM%2Bfree%2Bmobile%2Bphones|50000545.htm

Both are only 3G but there probably aren't many 4G options available within a week at those prices.

Would you recommend this as a primary phone? My phone got stolen last week, One Plus 5 :( looking for a cheap replacement to do me for at least a year, not in a position to fork out another €500. Will this do the job? I don't use my phone heavily anyway, mostly calls, whatsapp, browsing, photos. TIA

As a LeEco (LeTV) owner I wouldnt recommend them. Go with Xiaomi/Ulefone etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 99 ✭✭Alan McG

I'd be interested to hear why you wouldn't recommend them? Compared to other phones at that price point that is.

Of course the other two brands are great, I own a Xiaomi myself, but they tend to be more expensive so wouldn't compare them for price or speed of delivery.

I find these cheap Chinese phones have great specs but eventually they start showing why they're cheap. I bought a Ulefone and it was great for a while and after 6 months or so, the battery was awful. Would charge twice a day. It was a high capacity when I bought it so sounded good but eventually it seemed to lose the capacity.

Bought a Motorolla G5+ and it's a fantastic phone and only cost around €200.

Yeah it does happen. I had a Ulefone and the screen stopped. But there is some great phones even under the €200 mark that can last and have great spec compared to when somebody spends €100 plus on a prepay hape of sh1te from a network. Even the basic billpay offerings would drive somebody mad given how slow they can be when in reality if somebody spent €150 on a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, theyd be more than content .

I got the Lenovo ZUK Z2 from one of those sites (cannot remember which one) and it is a decent phone but the earpiece is v low and unfortunately my hearing is not the greatest. Anybody know which/if any of these cheaper phones has a good earpiece?

  • Registered Users Posts: 577 ✭✭✭Justwinginit

I can also vouch for Xiaomi. Been using them for the past 3/4 years now, also got my wife one and my daughter. Great specs for the price. This is what I'm using at the moment...https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-4x-64GB-Smartphone-5-5-Snapdragon-625-CPU-4GB-RAM-NEW/222761911653?hash=item33dda50565:m:mZGPJ74zkYFWww-j4CUY1gA

For a sub €200 phone you can't really go wrong with Xiaomi. One of the more reputable chinese brands, also easy to get accessories for.

I bought the phone in the OP. Arrived last Friday. This unit is sealed and you cannot access the battery. The simcard tray did not accomodate my(Tesco) sim, so I slotted the sim into the slot, as I had done with several previous phones. The phone swallowed the sim and there was no way I could get it out.Contacted Amazon.es and told them what had happened.Thankfully Amazon have agreed to take it back and refund my dosh.

I would be slow to endorse this phone, but if they could fix the sim/sd card tray, it could be well worth the money.

    My 2 cents:).
