Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Right.. so what do you want me to do, to show the difference in fuel colour.

Keyboard warriors will always find fault with something.
I've no intention of spending money to show what I already know.

I'll put fuel from brand A into one plastic bottle, and ditto with brand B

    I'll take a pic tomorrow.
As I was probably the first to question your claim, I'll take your bait.
I responded as I have a scientific background. Any "test" should be on equal terms so having the liquids in visibly different coloured containers while saying look how the liquids are a different colour is going to raise eyebrows.
Nothing to do with being a keyboard warrior. Just looking for a fair test.

Did he make a decent interim attempt to address it

Here's a pic in plastic bottles.

That's better - the difference is clear now, thank you.
Do you know if there are any additives in one (based on brand marketing) and not in the other?

If they are two different brands of diesel they're not going to be the same colour.

I find the same thing happens if I buy two different brands of sunflower oil for cooking.

Brand A: (the darker one) is Maxol, bought on 16/9/19 at Lwr Glanmire Rd.

Brand B: Circle K, regular diesel,
bought on 16/9/19 at Lwr Glanmire Rd.

I was just showing that there is a difference with fuel from different stations.

Your sunflower oil is coming from various farms.

In cork, I would have thought that all of our fuel came from Whitegate refinery which is only 30km away from both of these stations.

I'm half tempted to get a drop of diesel from AppleGreen and put that into a 3rd bottle.

Probably so, but each distributor may mix in their own additives before it hits the pumps

Both brands might get their diesel from the same refinery but the additive for each brand is added when they are loading the truck at the refinery.

You know that both those stations are fuelled by fuel from either Foynes or Whitegate?

It all comes from the same tanks no matter the brand, some might have additives and some may not but all fuel you buy in this country is ultimately from the same place.

Apologies. I see you already mentioned Whitegate :)

Well.... some of it could come from other more nefarious sources! ;)

But I think a major Maxol and Circle K station are probably getting it from legal sources and the different additive is the reason for colour difference in this case.

    It is all the same.

Some companies pay the refinery more for additives to preserve/improve fuel.

The one on the left shows signs of dehydration and maybe using too much berroca.

    So, a little update.

I pulled into a 3rd brand of petrol station today (I won't be naming it at this moment in time)

My car was fairly full so I wouldn't have needed much fuel, so I pumped about 2L into my car, and then very slowly pumped about half a litre into a clean water bottle that I had.

All this was done with the intention of posting the colour result up here.
(The third bottle has a sight blue tint to it so I was going to decant it into the same type of bottle as was previously used)

Anyway, as I was slowly pumping the fuel into the bottle, I noticed a fleck of something travel, with the fuel into the bottle.

    Let's have a look

    IMG-20190919-175233.jpg

    IMG-20190919-175307.jpg

In conclusion, Brand C is a lot closer in colour to Brand B (circle k) but it has a nice lump of black stuff in it.

How do you get diesel into a 500ml water bottle without spilling it?
Do you carry a funnel around with you?

I've banged off an email to Company HQ of "brand C" , and I'm awaiting a reply.

I sent them pics of the fuel with lumps floating in it and the receipt.

    Let's see what they say.

They'll say the station has a rusty fuel tank.

I can’t see them admitting the fuel is dirty.

Colour depends on the amount of Fatty acids, tallow, Me esters , or Fatty acids, vegetable oil, Me esters that was added. The more added, the more it looks like '' new vegetable oil colour''
The diesel with less has that greeny tint.

So which diesel would be considered a better mix?
The lighter one with the greeny tint I'm presuming.

I don't see that happening either.
I'm sure they'll tell me that they have thoroughly checked the fuel and that it meets and exceeds the required standards.

But I'll know where I won't be buying fuel.

One is probably supplied from whitegate refinery
One is probably supplied by pembokeshire refinery.

Diesel color changes slightly during the year too depending on chemicals required to refine it.

Google "the color of diesel fuel - well-worth products"

Is there no way that that piece of black stuff could be external contamination? The fuel is filtered out of the pumps iirc so it's hard to imagine a chunk that big making it through? Could it be forecourt debris from the ground or a breeze, could it have entered at any point between the bottle being emptied of water and filled with diesel? Could it have come from the diesel pump handle which are generally filthy?

I'm not saying it didn't come from the pump but I still dont think this is really scientific enough to go finger pointing.

You're effectively putting forward the idea that 66% of the random diesel purchases you've made may not be fit for purpose, which if that was anything like reality, there'd be a lot more broken down cars.

I'm not saying anything of the sort.
I have never stated that any of the fuels were not fit for purpose.
I just showed examples of what I have purchased.

But hey... Dust off the crucifix, gather the pitch forks, light the torches, and saddle up the horses.

And as for the black piece of material.. I saw it enter the bottle, from the nossel with my own eyes.

Eye witness testimony isn't worth much these days.

I would believe you in different colours of diesel, anybody remember Duckhams oil from many years ago 20w-50 as it was green and easily read on the dipstick.I dont use diesel so cannot say if one was better but be sure the bad one may stop/clog your fuel filter.

Isn't this why cars have fuel filters?

It could just as easily been a random fly that died in the filler nozzle.

There’s no problem with the fuel. It’s due to the varying levels of bio content used. It varies across all fuel tanks
