Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Watching it now. So sad and heart breaking. I have many happy memories of times spent there. It looks very bad.

Listening to BBC five live and the presenter is saying a good bit of the roof is gone.

CNN have a couple angles, one of them is showing the fire just gobbling it up. There's no saving it.

The spire is on fire. Disaster. You expect these things to last for ever.

Just saw a bit on RTE news. The spire is engulfed.

First time in ages I have access to a television as I'm in a hotel and it's awful looking footage. That fire is huge, it looks like an inferno. Sad.

Not so fast. If the stone work and structure remain intact, it should be possible to reconstruct it. Just look at the damage done to Cologne or Frankfurt cathedrals during World War 2. Notre Dame has the advantage that it’s not being subjected to exploding 500 pounder bombs.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

The spire has collapsed into the main body of the building - not good.

It's done a stint as a Temple to Reason.

So much reason they put thousands to death by guillotine for the Goddess of Reason they installed on the altar.
That wasn't reason, citoyen. That was terror.

There is something beautiful and awe-inspiring about cathedral architecture. Perhaps mankinds greatest engineering feats.

Whenever I go to a foreign city, I make sure to check out a cathedral if there is one. So peaceful to sit with my thoughts to myself even if I don't consider myself religious.

Have yet to get to Paris, but Notre Dame was certainly on the bucket list.

    So sad to see.

Catastrophic. It is like watching a bulldozer tear down Stonehenge. Or a child splattering paint all over the Mona Lisa. Has anything so priceless ever been destroyed by fire before?

    Awful!

Events like this show how bad RTE is to react. News on now but nothing about it.

Edit. News ended and no mention in headlines recap.

I haven’t see any. French news says it was an accident.

Imagine the anger if this turns out to be arson. I fear for France.

There's no saving it from the fire is what I was implying. I think a lot of the construction is wooden too.

Ah c'mon, Sky News were slow getting to it, even France 24 had a panel discussing politics while CNN had live coverage.

You'd wonder what could have caused such a devastating inferno. There was probably a lot of wood in there though.

Still hoping it was a blowtorch or some other accident and not something sinister.

Iconic building with so much history, and grand architecture, more or less gone now.

It is very much an unfolding situation so not on all news outlets just yet. Hard to see how severe damage can be avoided
