    There are a couple of Ibis Budget hotels in Manchester: one on Pollard St., one out at Salford Quays. I'm familiar with the chain - cheap & clean - but not the Manchester ones specifically. (I've booked an Edinburgh one, out near the airport.) The Salford Quays one is a bit further away, but is closer to its Metrolink tram stop from the centre, and is a bit cheaper than Pollard St. (£59 vs £72) for a room with double & single (bunk) beds on 14 March. .

    Death has this much to be said for it:
    You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

    Them or travelodge, seem to be in and around the same price so its grand. Travelodge have an extra location or twona bit more pricey.

    New feature. Liking what I hear

    Love the bit where they're in the room all listening back and bopping their heads along! Sounds class too!

    I think he really upped his game on the Raven... I have inflating expectations with the more I see/hear of this album. I like the way they appear to write the songs too. Just a bunch of extremely talented musicians in a room inspiring each other.

    Fcuk me, I can't wait for this album.

    The title track from Hand Cannot Erase can be bought on iTunes now.

    It stood out as a song as I was looking forward to hearing when I saw an extract in the first preview video, I really like it.

    Is that the 1 minute teaser or the song? Constantly looking for flights now, its really annoying me!

    Balls was holding out to listen to that song later after work, didn't think it'd be taken down :(

    Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    It was the full song ... luckily I ripped it before it was taken down (don't worry I've already Pre-Ordered the album) .... a mate of mine had a few listens and said "sounds a little like Manic Street Preachers" ... I had another listen and had to agree ... that's not saying the song is bad by the way .... it's a pop tune .. it'll probably be the light in an album full of shade .. can't wait to hear it in the context of the whole album.

    Damnit, would love to hear it in full. There was one song in the studio clips that sounded poppy, I assume it'll be that one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,873 ✭✭✭RayCon

    :eek: I deleted the ripped file in error !!! ... Balls.

    @Mushy .. I set up a Skyscanner alert for Manchester flights and got a ping on Dec 23rd to say there had been a price drop. Managed to get :

    Dub->Man
    Outbound 10.35am Sat 14th

    Man->Dub
    Inbound 8am Sun 15th .......... for €53.

    A few of the other lads got

    Dub->Man
    Outbound 10.35am Sat 14th

    Man->Dub
    Inbound 1.30pm (they get a lie-in) Sun 15th .. for €88

    Oh man, thats rough!

    Yeah I got my flight over there last night for €20. The return flight said €34 on google flights, went into Ryanair and it was coming up at €43. Aiming for the 8am flight, not booking accommodation, the auld airport sleepover job will do for that hour. Would loved to have got a later flight than 6.30 on the Saturday though. Half tempted at looking into going to the football when there though. Or be around the stadium for the craic.

    If I know the lads I'm traveling with like I know I do ... we'll spend the day traipsing around Manchester looking in record shops (Fopp, Vinyl Exchange etc) and possibly charity shops for bargain / rare vinyl.

    That sounds alright then. As I said, will be in Manchester by 8am, plenty of time to find stuff to do, along with the inevitable prog weekend curry and beer!

    Have heard the new song, and it is a lot more poppy sounding than usual Steven Wilson. Would agree that there is a slight Manic Street Preachers vibe to it as well.

    Anil Prasad of Innerviews conducted recently an interview with long-time Porcupine Tree bassist and composer Colin Edwin. Asked about the status of Porcupine Tree, Edwin commented:

    “The status is we haven’t had any discussions on when to do anything. At the moment, the band exists as an entity. I hope we won’t leave it too long, because we really have put a lot of work into building up the band. I know there still is a lot of interest in Porcupine Tree. It would be a shame to let that pass. We haven’t had any discussion about knocking it on the head. I think at some point there will be more Porcupine Tree, it’s just a case of when. I don’t think it’s anytime soon. I’m not going to hang around and wait for it, because everyone is doing their own thing.“

    Porcupine Tree released their tenth studio album “The Incident” in 2009, followed by the 2010 world tour after which the band went on hiatus.

    “When we made The Incident, we spent a couple of weeks in the studio. It was just the four of us working up the material and coming up with new stuff. It was very productive. I don’t doubt that would be the case again if we got back together. I don’t think we would be scratching our heads wondering what to do. I’m sure we’d come up with something good,” Edwin said.

    It is kinda interesting to note that he is saying the Incident was very productive and he thinks they'd make something good, whereas I believe I read a quote from Steve saying when he looks back on The Incident he feels like the writing was a bit tired and not as inspired (paraphrasing there).

    And since Steven is undoubtedly the driving force it's really dependent on him wanting to go back to it

    Aye, I can't see Steve even thinking about Porcupine Tree until he's finished touring with his solo stuff. He might take a break then (Does he ever take a break??) and if the solo tour went as well as the last one he might prefer to go again with them before going back to PT.

    Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    'So we hear you're taking a year off Steven?'
    'Oh yeah I'm just taking it easy, remixing 4 King Crimson albums as well as collecting a bunch of ambient experimental stuff I've written over the past 15 years and releasing it as a collectors edition.... So just relaxing really'

    Yikes Porcupine Tree as a side-project would be weird!

    Also, Gavin's next album is jazz re-writings of his favourite PT songs, released in April. Calling it Cheating the Polygraph!

    It certainly has a more accessible feel akin to Lightbulb Sun-era Porcupine Tree than the progressive virtuosity of the The Raven...

    Will wait to hear the rest of the album.

    Yeah, I think it's a song that'll have to be appreciated in the context of the album

    Nice song, very chilled. It's got a bit of a 'pop' sound to it, not meaning that in a bad way I'm really liking it.

    I like it and there's Nothing wrong with having something accessible. It's place and context within the album could be key though.

    Sounds a bit like M83 to me, more like a track written to fit the theme of an album rather than a single like Hand Cannot Erase.

    really like it though. Very atmospheric with some beautiful melodies.

    I love that he constantly evolves his sound

    After a quick listen in work, I like it. Will appraise it properly later on.

    The 2 tracks released so far seem quite upbeat, wonder if that'll translate in the album.

    Going by the subject matter of the album, I expect it will get dark. Plus it's Steven Wilson :P

    I like both of the songs. Perfect Life has a nice atmosphere to it. Getting excited about the release now

    Cannot wait for this album. The two songs he released so far are really good.

    This interview is well worth watching, talks about the new album and the inspiration behind it.

    He also talks about Porcupine Tree in the last 2 minutes or so of the 2nd video. The jist of it is, nothing is happening with PT anytime soon.

    Major Rush influence on that one, I thought, in particular a few nods to Xanadu. Which adds a whole 'nother layer to the back story, if you know what was behind the original poem (by Samuel Taylor Coleridge).

    Like that soundcloud link. I wouldn't be very knowledgeable of SW/PT. From what I can hear, there don't seem to be any major musical differences between SW and PT. Well, I suppose SW is PT, but you know what I mean...

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,228 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

    Have listened to the album 3 or 4 times in full now. Really enjoy it, not quite as much as Raven, but that's fine. There's a great atmosphere running throughout it and I think Steve has put together a really special album. Ancestral and Routine are probably my pick of the tracks.

    I am in full support of this album. I do not want to make comparisons to TRTRTS, it bears no resemblance...and it is fantastic!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,873 ✭✭✭RayCon

    Despite getting the dispatch mail from Burning Shed I couldn't wait and have "obtained" the album for a sneaky listen. 3 full run throughs now and it is fantastic. It's not a dark as I expected it to be given the subject matter, in fact it's very light and upbeat in places - not that I'm complaining.

    I'm picking up Rush bits, Porcupine Tree bits (obviously) and Roger Waters solo stuff from it .... can't wait to hear it live

    I think this is the most "Porcupine Tree sounding" album of all SW's solo stuff. At times I reckon it could have been releases as a PT album and I wouldn't tell the difference.

    After a first listen, well, it's going to take many listens to get a handle on the album. Like the previous album, it doesn't spoon-feed the narrrative to you: what you get out of it depends in large part on what you bring with you. The title Transience might not resonate with most people, for example, but when I saw it I went straight to the Arthur C. Clarke short story with that title. Happy Returns strikes me as deeply subversive, a superficially "happy" song with a bit of a 90s Marillion vibe, but there's much more going on there. :cool:
