Make sure you get rid of that crossbow soon or you'll be doing 5 years in Mountjoy:pac:

It's nothing to do with that anyway.
Okay. I was going by what was written at #7 on http://www.justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/Firearms_and_Ammunition_FAQ

It seems if the crossbow was under a joule, it'd be legal, or am I reading that wrongly?

It's only airguns that that applies to, the sentence isn't very clearly written there.

Crossbows don't have a muzzle so 'muzzle velocity' can't be measured as such. It's nothing to do with their power, compounds and recurves are all way over 1 joule and there is no issue.

The problem with crossbows is that there is no sport for them here, when the Restricted list was drawn up back in 2008, the DoJ lumped loads of firearms etc. on to it. Rifles with foldings stocks, rifles with pistol grips etc. were all on it and when they consulted with shooters about it, different groups argued that the stock and pistol grip section should be done away with and it was. But there was nobody there to call for crossbows to be taken off it so they said 'Grand nobody wants them' and it was signed.

It's still technically possible to get a licence for one but try asking an archery club would they be interested in getting into crossbows, you'll be shown the door because archers don't want the DoJ taking anymore notice of them than they already do.

. What's the position with crossbows, spearguns, paintball markers and airguns such as air rifles?

Crossbows, spearguns and all airguns with a muzzle velocity of over one joule (including paintball markers) are legally considered firearms and have to be licensed. You should apply for a firearms certificate in the normal way. i think this is the link?
