Hi,I'm still waiting for mu URGENT appointment.I was referred at 18.December and my appointment will be at 29.January.

I even never received any letter from James Breast Clinic, just one day I had enough and rang to clinic myself.

I was told, when for women's younger than 35 years of age, waiting time for appointment is 6 weeks!!!!

After all this ,my Gp gave me antidepressants.....I'm just cant handle all this any more.If knew all this before ,I would have gone as Private patient.

I hope you will get your appointment soon as possible.

Hi, I am glad I found this thread as I feel some people could help put me at ease. I am 25 and on Tuesday just gone my GP referred me as urgent to the mater breast clinic after examining a lump on my breast. I have told no one as I was in a bad car crash last year and already have worried my friends and family enough!!!

I was wondering how long it takes for the appointment to arrive, and when it does, does it give you much notice (I'm worried about booking off work!)

Also do the appointments take long? Will I spend all day up there?

I was worried about this, but I was starting to go insane, get no sleep, not eat. So I have decided to convince myself nothing is wrong!!

Hope you all get good news ladies, thank you :)

I know when my GP referred me she told me if I did not hear from the hospital within a week, to let her know. I had to do this initially and once she called them to chase it up I got the appointment letter in the post shortly afterwards. Initial GP visit to first appointment was about 4 weeks I think but the GP did not deem me urgent so your situation may be different. Best of luck, I hope it all turns out clear for you.

Well here I am waiting for a breast check appointment. I know 9/10 lumps are harmless but it's still a gut wrenching shock to find a lump.

About a week ago I spotted an area of puckered skin. I know this is a sign to be wary of but I shoved the knowledge to the back of my mind. Then I noticed the puckering was less so I poked around a bit and sure enough I found a lump.

I went to gp yesterday and she has referred me to the breast clinic in cork. The wait is normally about 2weeks so here's to a fast 2weeks.

It is a shock I agree, hopefully all will go well for you

I still not have received any word, so I rang the clinic and they said that they had no referral letter for me even though when I rang my go they confirmed that they sent referral 3 weeks ago, so I'm stuck in limbo now and I don't really know what is going on!!

Has anyone had this happen to them? If so, any advice on what to do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,695 ✭✭✭Lisha

Oh that's very annoying fayco, a really shiiity add to your wait. Surely gp will resend letter and they will prioritise you.

I can't believe that happened to you

To be honest , I would go to GP and explain why you rang and what they said, and Gp would probably ring to see what's happening and to speed it up.

Happened to me before , waiting to get the ultra-sound done , was months waiting, Gp rang and St. James rang next day with appointment. Apparently my phone number was written incorrectly and they'd been trying to get in touch with me and obviously couldn't :)

Try not worry too much, easier said than done I know :)

Had some lumpiness last year, GP said best to go into James to have it checked.

Got sent an appointment time of 10am. Off I went and arrived at 9.20am. It was July and 21 degrees outside, the waiting room had radiators on and had dozens of women waiting in it. Hoping that an early arrival would facilitate an early departure I queued up, registered, and began my wait. I had a nasty cold at the time so I felt rubbish and was fairly sneezy and sniffly.

Anyway, no one told me where I was in the queue but I noticed that women who had come in after me were being called. It was horribly hot and uncomfortable and there were far too many people waiting in the room for the amount of chairs. There was a sign on the wall saying that all patients must be registered by 2pm or they would not be seen.

I was trying to be patient but after 3 hours I went and asked what was going on. I was assured that I would be seen soon. Another 40 minutes went. I simply felt too unwell to stay so I went to tell them that I couldnt stay any longer. At this point the nurse told me I was second last on the list because it was prioritised according to severity of problem and mine wasnt severe.

So it didnt matter that I had a 10am appointment that I had arrived 40 minutes early for, I was just bumped to the bottom and left there for the next 4 hours with no idea of where I was on the list, no food, unwell, probably infecting the whole room.

When I said I had to leave the nurse assured me I would be next. I was called next. The breast consultant was pretty cold and I assumed I was marked as trouble for making a fuss. Anyway she examined me, said there was nothing wrong and that because all patients got a free mammogram as part of the appointment I was to phone the number on the card she gave me and make another appointment to have it done. Then she shrugged and said "but you dont need it".

So I left and never made that appointment. All I can say is that I was worried beforehand but the breast consultant did put my mind at ease but that the experience of James hospital was horrendous. I was over 4 hours and actually weak and dizzy by the time I left from the lack of food and the heat.

So I went for my appointment today.Arrived 30 minutes earlier, got my ticket and then waited to be called.
Lady took my appointment letter and waiting began.

I was called after one hour and half by consultant.

Same story there.....he examined me 2 minutes, said there was nothing wrong and I have a dense breasts(I'm 31 years old)

Then I was given leaflet and advised to take primrose oil.

Of course I'm happy with good news, but if honest I was hoping to get proper examination(mammogram or ultrasound) to be on the safe side.....

i was sent to triple assessment clinic in nov 14 as i queried a lump with my gp. she said it was nothing to worry about at worst fibroidadunoma (spelt wrong ). i had a two week wait. a nervous wreck....even though gp tried to reassure me. had exam then mammogram and ultrasound all clear..thankfully!! i came home so relieved. i. cried the minute i was waiting for mammo till ultrasound was done. i'd say they never saw the likes of this emotional state either way i worried twice as bad as i know this lumpy area is there forever which when you read the earlier caught the better the outcome. so naturally i think im a goner!! My sister came for support as my husband was working. so next thing 2nd week in january i recieve my appoint for 2nd feb for follow up appoint. and different doc that day and exams me again as he did everyone id say... he feels lumpy area and says was this area done with ultrasound and i say yes as i think the radiographer that day ( with a inconsolable patient on her table) . he then says to nurse can we have ultrasound done again on this particular area of breast today...she says no. as the consultant radiologist is out of country. now i have to wait up to 3 weeks again. and believe im a nervous wreck all over again...until its done i cant relax. its so hard to go through this anxiety :-( .

Well my breast check appointment was today and thankfully it looks like all is ok.
All I can say is that the service and staff in cuh were excellent in every way.
Am waiting for official paperwork to be sent to gp next week but from what they said today all is ok.

Best of luck to everyone else.
I know the hse can be wrong on so many levels but I can only praise my experience with them today .

Hi Ladies, well I have 2 lumps, one small pea sized and 1 much bigger, both in right breast, saw the gp last Thursday and was told 6 weeks at least for apt in breast clinic, so i decided to pull out the credit card :( and have apt on Thursday for mammogram and possibly ultrasound at 11.30 and consultant at 3.40, so only have a couple of days to wait, but I am very nervous!

Just came across this thread, and I wish you all the very best.

Please remember though, it is not all about lumps. I noticed my nipple had retracted. Ignored it over Christmas as you do, ah it will be ok. Then it went in more.

It is one of the signs, along with "orange peel" look to the breast skin, and redness. I did not have either of those.

GP wasn't worried said I had fatty tissue.

I insisted on a mammogram and ultrasound. (My sister died last year RIP from Ovarian Cancer, and it can be connected to BC). Family history.

Like yourselves weeks of a wait for Breast Clinic. So I rang James' Private in Dublin. Got an appointment two days later. Double mammogram that had to be repeated AAAAGH. And an ultrasound. All on the same day and results too. Best thing ever.

All was well. Thank God. Consultant Radiologist said I was dead right to get the nipple change checked out, it is all lumps, lumps lumps, but there are other signs too. Now I will have mammo every year as there is an area they are keeping an eye on.

They got the last Breastcheck results to compare, and that final check came through last week. No change, all is well. For now.

€240 the lot. Best few bob I have ever spent. In out results all on the same day, within two days. I stuck it on the CC.

I hope you will all be ok.

Hi all, just looking for some advice or opinions please.
Im 31 and found a large lump in left breast in late November. I didn't do anything about it until after Xmas as I waited for my period to come and go to see if it would go away. It didn't, so in January I went to my gp who referred me to the mater breast clinic urgently for a triple assessment and said I should be seen in two weeks. It ended up being just over three weeks wait. I went for the appointment, was called after about 45mins and examined by a doctor (not the doctor whose name was given on the appointment letter). He examined the lump and said he thought it was a cyst. He tried to drain it but it didn't work. He said I would need an ultrasound. I thought this would be done on the day as I was sent for the triple assessment but he said no, the appointment would be sent out in the post. That was in the 7th feb. The appointment came for the ultrasound for the 20th march and this morning I got another letter rescheduling for the 23rd march. Has anyone else experienced having to wait this long or not having all required tests in the same day?
I've been worried about this for 3 months altogether at this stage and now I have to wait til march. The lump is still there and I have also some pain in my arm which I feel could be caused by it.
Thanks for reading. Any opinions or experiences appreciated.

I have fibrocystic breasts which can be very painful and tendor at the beginning when it started, I wouldn't even be able to move my arm with the pain. I started to take evening primrose oil (it's a high strength one which works for me) and continue taking it daily.
I had to wait myself a few weeks between seeing doctor and mammogram. He was happy that it wasn't anything which it did turn out to be nothing.

Thanks for your reply Marje. I read that evening primrose oil is a natural remedy so started taking it a few weeks ago. Hopefully it'll make a difference.

When I went to see my breast specialist ,he also recommended for me to start taking evening primrose oil, also he told me.....it might take up to 3 month to feel benefits from it.

    I'm using this one: http://www.sona.ie/evening-primrose-oil-1000mg.html

im a 35 year old woman with a direct line with 2 generations with breast cancer ( my mam and my dad's mam) so i knew i would always have to get checked. finally got the ball rolling a few weeks ago and had my mammogram and ultrasound on mon. they found a mass on my right breast so had to go into hospital first thing the following morning to get a biopsy. they know what it is and know it's not dangerous but because of my family history they weren't taking any chances.

With my family history i knew id have to take out health insurance. still had to pay for consulation and the ultrasound. but everything was done so quick.

hoping to hear by earliest tommorow or by early next week. Has anyone had a biopsy done before and does it take long to heal? finding it hard to sleep the last 2 nights since ive had it done as can't sleep on my stomach like i normally do.

Hi everyone, I'm delighted I have come across this thread, it has helped me calm down a bit. I recently turned 50 and was called to a mobile breast screening unit last week for a mammogram. I wasn't worried as I knew this was just because of my age and all women over 50 are given the opportunity to attend. Anyway within the week I received a letter saying I had to attend the breast clinic in Eccles st this coming Wednesday 10th June. Now I'm scared stiff as I am convinced they wouldn't call me unless something was wrong. I haven't even told my hubby and I intend going on my own. I have a couple of questions that some of you might be able to answer for me. Firstly, my appointment is 10 am which I will not be able to make as I want to drop my 12 yr old to school at 9 so she wont know anything about me going to Dublin. As I live in the south east of the country it will take me around 1 and half hours to reach Dublin so my question is - do lots of people get the same appointment time like in some hospitals and also can anyone help with information about parking (keep in mind that i'm a culchie and not used to driving in Dublin though I have a good idea where the mater is). Thanks in advance for any help.

When I was there everyone had their own time, but give them a ring and let them know you are coming and will be late.
It may be as simple as just having to re-take the images. There is paid parking around the area and in the Mater Hospital car park. It's always fairly busy.

think i was waiting about 4 weeks. could depend on your history (if you have breast cancer in the family) and maybe if you have health insurance or not. in my letter it stated that i have 2 genertations of breast cancer so i have 20% of getting it so maybe that's why i got mine quick enough. im not sure it's just what my thought it on it.

my tests in the end came back clear. my mass was what they thought it was but will be going back every year from now on and im in my mid 30's. hope you get seen quickly diddle. if you have any other queries or anything let us know.

    Best of Luck!!

is this your first time going for a check? my consultant said due to there being 10 years between my age and the age of my mum when she was diagnosed i now have to be seen every year. gives me piece of mind some bit to be honest. my dad's mum was in her late 30's i believe when she was diagnosed but due to there not being the knowledge there is today and the medicine she didn't beat it.

In this week for another check up , a few more new lumps and bumps , doctor confident they're more cysts , as I have lots apparently , but sending me to get them checked just to be safe .

First time.. Went to gp with embarrassingly itch nipples which led to breast exam where she found lumps.. Bit shell shocked at moment.. My gran aunt had double mastectomy in her early 50s n when my grandmother died they discovered lumps on her breast..all on my mother's side..

Had appointment today , all well Tg , mammogram, ultrasound and fine needle aspiration again, results of that in a week or so but they were happy that it's just more new cysts that had developed.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting .

Hi , it's just where they insert a (large :) ) needle into the cyst to draw out whatever fluid/ gunk may be in it , and then then send it up to Cytology to be analysed just to make sure there's nothing abnormal/strange in it. When I say gunk , I mean that mine normally tend to have been cysts with infection so the fluid is always gunky in my case :)

Doesn't really hurt to be honest, just more of a pressure when the needle is going into the cyst.

    Hope that helps !!

well im heading back to beaumount it seems. i found my first proper lump ( and it does actually feel like a pea). didn't think i would be going back so soon :( Don't have a date yet as have to ring the hospital in the morning but just home from seeing the doc and he felt the lump too. He isn't massively worried. just really hope i don't have to go for another bioposy. :(

    Hi everyone,

So I was referred to a breast clinic last August due to a pain in my left breast was seen on the day where I was examined by a doctor and a consultant and they could see no lump or anything sinister. they told me I am too young for a mammogram and I kinda expected them to do an ultrasound on the day but they didnt. I was just relieved to get out of there. Has anyone else experienced this when they went? still have the pain so considering going back to ask they do one just to be sure.. was wondering if it was normal not to do one.. thanks

have you any history of breast cancer in your family? i was just going for my first check up. i hadn't found anything or wasn't sore but due to my direct line of 2 generations of breast cancer i was checked straight away. im 10 years younger than my mam was when she was diagnosed so i now have to be checked every year. bit of a pain but better safe than sorry i guess

My mum had a mammogram recently and she said the pain was really awful. She has quite a high pain threshold, but she came home with a bruised and very sore sternum. I know that some discomfort is to be expected, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows of anyone who has?

She contacted the helpline number, but they pretty much dismissed her as being awkward and complaining for the sake of it, which she's not - she's someone who popped back in her thumb when she dislocated it playing sport and continued to the end of the match! Maybe someone could recommend somewhere she could go/someone she could talk to about it as she's really hesitant about going back for her next check up (she got the all clear, thankfully, so it wouldn't be for a good while yet).

Perhaps if she contacts the helpline again she will get someone else who won't be as dismissive? Was it the helpline in the hospital or a centralised number elsewhere (for several hospitals)? Other than that a visit to her GP to check the bruising. I've only had one mammogram before and aside from some discomfort when your boobs are being squeezed/compressed, it was fine. Once that bit was over there was no pain afterwards and I don't think there should be.

Waking an old-ish thread but I was trawling boards to find something. I have an appointment next week because my gp thinks it's a big cyst I have and thinks they may do fine needle aspiration and an ultrasound and maybe even a mammogram if they think it's necessary

The thing is I'm due my period the day after the appointment and given how tender and sore they are before my period I'm dreading the fine needle thing. Anyone know how painful it is, if your boobs are already sore?

First time going, I'm not stressed out of my head yet but I'd like to know more of what to expect. When I ring the breast clinic I keep getting an answering machine..........:(

Daenarys i had to get some fine needle thing for my biopsy and they numbed the area. i didn't feel a thing but because i seem to have a medical phobia i had freaked out anyhow when lying down. Just explain to them that that you are a bit feeling a bit tender im sure they will be mindful of it.

im off for my yearly mammogram on monday. been lucky been so busy the last week that i haven't had time to think about it and im working all weekend so hopefully that will keep me occupied. don't think things have changed for my bocidy boob so should be fine.
