Moving forward from the boot for now into the passenger compartment, so next up is finishing off the cross bracing on the parcel shelf that the rear set will sit on

    IMG_8889.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

There is the central point where the two braces join to the trans tunnel hump that needed to be secured, probably overkill but why stop that process now…

    IMG_8896.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8902.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I also needed to sort the front & rear of where the braces join to the parcel shelf itself

    IMG_8898.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8897.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8895.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8891.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

These cleaned up & clamped to be sure of a correct fit

    IMG_8899.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    Then welded home

    IMG_8903.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I also finished the welding of the inner wheel house to the floor, this is the front half of the inner wheel tub

Your going to hate me for asking this but ............ are you certain the chassis rails are straight - that when you put back on the suspension & driveline parts and let the car sit on the ground again - that the car will sit correctly. Otherwise the welding, especially cross braces like that parcel shelf, will hold the car out of alignment

    Sorry :o

Nope, would never hate anyone for asking a valid question. I've measured & cross referenced the **** out of both cars.. if the car was out of alignment before I seam welded everything it still would have been out of alignment.

The only reason I'm doing this additional welding work now is that I'm doubling the BHP & tripling the torque of the original engine here so I'm doing what the race teams back in the 70's found that they needed to do to stop the bodies flexing & cracking under race engine loads.

I've a little more to do on the floor this weekend & then I will actually be putting all the running gear back in one last time before I commit that the body work is done.

Finished off the floor, specifically I’m seam welding where the floor meets the sill panels… as a Coupe these cars are known to suffer from flex with big torque engines & the fix seems to be making the floor as solid as you can

    IMG_8906.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8905.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ll grind these back a little later but I’ll be seam sealing over the welds & then the carpet goes over that so you’ll never see them again

    IMG_8913.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8912.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8911.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8908.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ve also welded along the top of the inner & outer sill panels

    IMG_8907.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8909.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

There is a gap in the floor just in front of the rear wheel tub where I’d cut out some rust so that needed a small patch welded in

    IMG_8914.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8915.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8917.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

On the drivers side there is a also bad patch of rust that needs to come out

    IMG_8918.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

It’s against the tub but also along the sill join

    IMG_8919.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8920.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I didn’t want to stuff about with little patches so I decided to just cut out a large section

    IMG_8923.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8925.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8924.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then a little Cardboard Aided Design work Binky style…

    IMG_8927.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Used my vice mounted break to bend the long side

    IMG_8928.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8929.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I couldn’t use the same to put the second bend in obviously so just used the vice & a hammer to put that bend in

    IMG_8930.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8932.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then just a little fettling to make sure that the new patch fits perfectly

    IMG_8933.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now that that’s welded in I think that that’s the floor welding finished…

One big bit of the suspension install will be the front brace that locates the from of the huge torque arm that goes from the face of the diff to just before the back of the gearbox. As this brace is the whole width of the space between the front chassis rails & is held in place by 28 bolts I’ve decided not to just place the brace/bracket where they show in the poor quality pics of the instructions, I’ll mount up all the suspension & set the diff at the correct expected hide height & that will allow me to have the exact location of the brace/bracket.

First up the bracket that holds the coilovers & the 4 link rear end go on

    IMG_8935.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8936.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8937.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then slid the diff under on some axle stands, I’ll need to set the ride height using the axle stands as obviously the shell won’t be heavy enough for its own weight to compress the coilovers to the right level.

    IMG_8940.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8939.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8938.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then I jacked up the front end of the torque arm so that I can get the diff level so I can connect the lower arms & the coilovers

    IMG_8942.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8941.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then I install the Mumford multilink arms on…

    IMG_8949.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8948.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8946.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I hope this stuff ends up working half as good as it looks…. They say to try & get the arms as close to parallel with the diff housing, so I disconnected the coilovers & jacked up the diff till they where parallel

    IMG_8950.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With the diff at that height the diff is way to high I think for the ride height I’m chasing… right now there is about 95mm from the top of the diff housing to the bottom of the chassis rail & from memory the old ride height was a little over 130mm.

The diff isn’t centered right now, it’s about 8mm too far to the drivers side, so I need to use the central adjuster arm of the Mumford link to slide the diff over & center it

    IMG_8951.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Once that’s centered, I’ll dig out the wheels so I can set the diff height correctly & then I can mock up the front torque arm floor brace & drill the 28 holes to mount it… but the engine for my GTO turned up so it’ll be a week or so till I get back onto this now I reckon…

For what we all think - old cars are "easier" to work on -- there is some adjusting in this car, thanks for the updates

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

Thanks to a mate measuring up the gap between the top of his diff housing & the bottom of chassis rails I was able to get a good idea of what ride heights I might like running in the end, I played around with the diff height for a while & this is what I ended up at, ultimately the final height can of course only be worked out when the full wet weight of the car is acting on the suspension & I’m actually driving it… but for now this is a good starting point

    IMG_8991.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8990.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

As these are freshly repaired &/or replaced Qtr panels they have not had their lips rolled & to be honest I really want to keep them that way if I can… the 315 section rears fit with plenty of room to spare as you can see both inside & out

    IMG_8994.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8993.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8992.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I have 30mm from the face of the tyre to the inside edge of the lip… I reckon that I could go 335 or maybe just squeeze 345’s under the rear without having to modify the guards… but we’re getting way ahead of ourselves… for now the skinny 315’s will have to do.

    IMG_8995.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now the reason for wanting to get the diff height close to right is so that I can be as sure as possible that when mock up the position of this front brace that the torque arm from the diff connects to… I get it right

    IMG_8996.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

My plan was to use the jack to hold it tight up against the floor until I got it in the right spot & then I would put some tack welds on the sides to hold it to the floor, that way when I drop the diff back off I can spin the car up 90 degs so that I’m marking & drilling all 28 bolt holes for it vertically & not whilst laying on my back

    IMG_8999.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_8998.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now I can’t remember if I had covered the story of my passenger side front guard or not?? I sure as **** am not reading back thru the whole thread to find out, so here’s a short recap… I’d been stripping the hanging panels by hand & a mate offered to take them to his work & media blast them… I gave him a front guard as a test panel to see how they would turn up… that panel got “lost” for a LONG time & I actually ended up getting two other panels to replace my original but both of them have rust in the lower halves & will need some work to get them right… well last week my mate calls me as they are doing a massive clean up at his factory & he’s found my panel…. So very happy….

    IMG_9000.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The more observant of you will notice that it’s not actually been blasted at… in fact all that’s happen in the 18 months it’s been “lost” is a lot of scratches… not to worry at least I have it now & I’m that this is a solid rust free panel like the other original guard & bonnet too

    IMG_9001.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9002.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Ok…. So when my engine builder was dropping of the engine for the GTO the other weekend, he asked me if I’d ever meet the guy who lives just around the corner (1.2k’s door to door) who’s a painter who specializes in classic cars only (RS Porsche’s mostly)… long story short, I meet with the painter a few days ago at his & got to see his set up & where he does the prep work & the actual painting & he had two cars there in two different stages of work so I could see evidence of his work in the metal as it were. Before getting to go to his location he came around to see my cars & to meet me… from what my engine builder has told me that was for two reasons… 1. To “interview” me, if he doesn’t like the person he won’t work with them & 2. To see/meet the cars, if he has no interest in your car then he won’t paint them, he’s a perfectionist & if he’s not passionate about the project he won’t take it on…

Luckily for me both the cars & me passed the interview process & he’s agreed to paint both the XB & the Challenger… starting with the XB.. now normally he’s booked up about a year in advance but due to Covid he’s almost finished his current workload with no new bookings to follow…. So **** just got real as they say as I have now committed to having the XB painted by him in January… so I now have a deadline for the first time ever!! I must be done with all of my work & ready to go by January… I’m trying not to panic now, but I feel that I have enough time between now & then.

When he was over I was showing him the engine bay which I had started cleaning up & had started taking back to bare metal had started to develop flash rust on the surface & he has asked that I clean that all back to shiny bare metal ASAP & then he’ll come round & use his preferred brand of metal treatment & etch primer on it, that way he won’t need to rework that area when the car goes to him.

    IMG_9006.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9005.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

So I spent a chunk of time in the shed on the weekend getting the engine bay back to shiny bare metal… I also did the drivers side guard too… there are a lot of screw holes & drilled holes in the engine bay from years of people installing stuff, so I’ll be welding them up to make the bay as neat as possible…

    IMG_9008.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9007.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9012.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9010.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

That engine bay/front looks great. I can only guess that a metric fück-tonne of work went into it

You guess correct.... many many hours were spent & I'm only 90% done on the engine bay... then I still have the passenger side guard & the bonnet to do

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

I wanted to get the front end of the car sealed up & in primer this weekend, so I spent a few hours every evening on it.. the last 10% of the job took 90% of the time I swear trying to get into every last tiny tight spot… at one point I pushed her outside

    IMG_9014.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9013.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then I decided to give my sandblaster a go… the jury is out on this for now, it’s a cheap one obviously & it kept clogging so I must have spent more time cleaning & sorting the clogging that I did actually blasting & it was a hot evening & I was dressed up like a spaceman as the dust & grit gets everywhere & the clean up at the end is a massive pain in the hole…. But for the times when it was running & not clogging it worked a treat.. but it’s such a pain to set up/use/clean up after that I’ll only be using it on sections I can’t easily get to with a grinder or wire wheel.

    IMG_9015.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I also took this opportunity to weld up all of the old self tapper screw holes that riddle the front end from decades of people (myself included) installing crap in the engine bay.. it’s a simple process… find holes

    IMG_9016.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    Weld holes

    IMG_9017.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    Linish back the welds

    IMG_9018.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Finally Sat afternoon I was able to sit back with a cold beer & call the job done…. I’m so glad I never have to do that again..

    IMG_9022.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Sun morning & the metal is all treated & we started to mask off

    IMG_9816.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9023.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then it was time to spray on my painters fave brand of Etch primer… I believe this to be the 4th colour now… but as part of the painting prep process he’ll be taking all the spray can primer I put on back off & treating & prepping the metal himself so in the end it’ll all be this uniform Etch primer colour (not that that matters I know)

It looks sooooooo good, it really shows up how **** spray can primer finishes look really… but at the end of the day the use of spray can primers really is only to stop flash rust on the sections you’ve finished working on..

    IMG_9030.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9031.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9032.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9033.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

We Etch primed the front guard I had in bare metal too as we had some left over in the gun (even though I’m not finished smacking that one with a hammer yet)… when I finish metal work on that panel & on all the others he wants me to take the panels to his place & he’ll Etch prime them there too so that they are done & ready to go

    IMG_9025.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

As I stood in the shed with a cold beer in hand on Sun night looking at this in front of me I actually got a bit emotional… from the age of 6 or so when I fist saw Mad Max this was the car I’d always dreamed of owning, a dream I made come true about 20 years ago… but the car was always a ****ter as they say & I drove her for 15 years dreaming that one day I’d be able to do a complete restoration of her & make her perfect… 5 years ago (April 3rd 2015) was the last time that she drove under her own power as that when I moved her into this shed & started slowly pulling her apart… I didn’t have a ****ing clue what I was doing (still don’t really) & because of travel for my job having me away for more than half the year normally, & the fact I was dumb enough to have multiple projects on the go at once & the fact I have wife & friends whom I wanted to be around somedays when I was home… I truly felt that this was just some never ending folly most days & that I’d just be working away a day or two a month & it would never actually be done… then 2020 came along & whilst it’s been a new level of ****ery for us all to live with, it’s been good to me in this way… I haven’t been away from the house since the 17th of Feb & I’ve had every weekend since then to focus on the XB & the Challenger & now I can truly see the fruits of this work… I can actually picture this car painted… I can see my dream of a perfect rust & dent free XB finally becoming a reality & it’s a beautiful thing to behold…

    IMG_9036.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Speaking of Covid.. we’ve been in level 5 house arrest mode since the start of June now & we’re about to be unlocked from next weekend the 8th… so now that I have the front end all primered (not sure that’s a word) up I’m going to focus to putting the rest of the GTO back together so that MrsXB & I have a muscle car to drive for the coming hopefully unlocked summer

Well done cobb, it’s a testament to all the hard work you’ve been putting in and at least there’s some silver lining to the cloud.

Luckily in WA we have had it pretty good since about April. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Happy New year all….. I hope 2020 ended as well as it could for you & hopefully 2021 will see a better year for us all… anyway, back onto restoring this rusty ****heap…. Time to fix the rust on the bottom of the doors

    IMG_9257.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The drivers side door isn’t too bad at all, the front bottom (quiet in the cheap seats) corner looks like this when brought back to bare metal, there is some rust but it’s not gone thru the metal

    IMG_9258.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I ground out the rust & filled the void with weld & then linished that back before spraying some primer on it

    IMG_9263.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9266.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The back bottom corner itself looks good, nothing to see here

    IMG_9259.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

But there is a rust hole along the flat section just before the fold

    IMG_9260.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

That rust hole was cleaned up & welded

    IMG_9264.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    Then painted in primer

    IMG_9267.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The rear section of the passenger side door is perfect

    IMG_9262.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

So just needs a coat of primer to protect it

    IMG_9265.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now the front section of the passenger side door is a little less than perfect…

    IMG_9261.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Luckily the rust is only in the top skin & the structure behind it is ok… that just got cleaned up & treated

    IMG_9271.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

This section has two different direction curves in it so I was struggling to get hat shape in simply using a hammer & sand bag to shape it

    IMG_9274.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9268.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

So I got to use my new toy that I bought a while back the shrinker/stretcher… that worked a treat for being able to curve the metal in nicely

    IMG_9275.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9276.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With the patched shaped nicely it was welded in & the welds cleaned up & then premiered… another job done

I’d never finished cleaning up the original bonnet, so that was the next job

    IMG_9287.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9289.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then I coated it in primer

    IMG_9290.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

There are two small patches of rust in the outer skin on the corners that will need fixing, but these shouldn’t be a big issue

    IMG_9292.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9291.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The passenger side front guard is the last large hanging panel that I hadn’t taken back to bare metal so lets see what horrors may be lurking under what looks like great paint….

    IMG_9286.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9288.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Up to 7mm of bog is the answer by the way… the guard has been crash damaged before & very poorly repaired so it’s massively dented

    IMG_9293.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’m thinking that I might hang it on the car & do the panel beating with it bolted on so that it doesn’t move on me…

    IMG_9293.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9298.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

It’s pretty bad at the front where it doesn’t meet up with the front eye mould at all

    IMG_9295.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Also at the rear were a bad patch was welded in sometime ago

    IMG_9296.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I had a mate over so I took the opportunity of having a helping hand to hang the doors back on so I could get a gauge for how bad the panel gaps might be

    IMG_9304.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9301.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9300.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

To quote Chernobyl… Not Great, Not Terrible…

    IMG_9306.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9305.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9303.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Of course I wouldn’t know just how bad until I had the bonnet remounted too so I could work all the front end gaps & that’s were physics ended play for the day… I didn’t realise just how far the end of the bonnet protrudes past the radiator support panel, turns out it’s further that the gap between said panel & the upright of the rotisserie

    IMG_9311.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9309.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9307.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9308.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Bugger so that was a waste of half a day & the panels all have to come off again… looks like I need to focus of finishing off the floor inside & out & get that prepped & painted then I can make a dolly frame & drop this car off the rotisserie for good & then I work on the panel fitment… still it was to see her almost looking like a car again.. painted the front guard in primer to protect it until I’m ready to do the panel work on it

    IMG_9318.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Making the most of having a helping pair of hands we test fit the long range drop tank to see how it fits against the new rear suspension.. it fouls badly… I’m starting to think that I’d need so much modification made to this tank that I should just sell it & have a custom tank made up instead

    IMG_9312.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9313.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Next up was to measure & drill all the mounting holes for the front brace for the suspension torque arm, a little bit of the handbrake cable bracket needed to be removed for a flush fit

    IMG_9314.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9315.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9316.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With that job done now it’s time to focus on the floor & only the floor until it’s painted & the car is off the rotisserie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

There are a lot of small holes drilled in the floor from years of people trying to add lightness Lotus style I assume… so I’ve marked all the ones to be welded up

    IMG_9320.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I was back on my own again so I needed to come up with a cleaver way to hold the copper block on the other side of the floor so I could weld up the hole… this seemed to work

    IMG_9321.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

All the small holes are gone now… now just the massive ugly one that Ford cut with an axe in the factory in case the car was to have a manual, mine will be auto so I’m going to close this huge ugly hole up

    IMG_9322.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

It’s a complex shape in that it curves in 3 directions, so I’ve decided to make two patches that I’ll join together.. the first one is a simple curved band

    Floor.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The next one had a bit more shaping needed & then I overlapped it onto that straight band above

    IMG_9331.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Underneath I just cut & flared it so that it was a smooth join

    IMG_9332.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

It’s come up looking pretty good I think & it’ll keep all of the road dirt out of the cabin

    IMG_9333.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9334.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The next job was one that I’ve been putting off for as long as I could as I really didn’t want to do it as I knew it was going to be a filthy prick of a job… that was grinding off all of the thick tar coating that is applied to the inside of the floor… this took the best part of two days in the end & I hated every minute of it

    IMG_9335.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9336.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9337.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9338.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9339.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The good news is that there were no nasty surprises under this coating.. some small pitting makes but nothing else, as much as I hated doing it I’m glad I did it & it looks great

    IMG_9342.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9341.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9340.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Whilst having a cold drink & admiring my work I noticed that I’ve forgotten to reattach the boot lock bracket… so better add that to the to do list now….

    Boot.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Right… well that was a longish update, thanks for reading this far if you did… you’re up to date now, there is a little more cleaning up of welds to do & some surface rust to be cleaned off the underside of the floor & then I hope to be priming & painting the floor very soon… then I’ll make a dolly & she can come off the rotisserie finally… then I can work the final front end panel gaps… then she leaves my shed & goes for painting… well that’s the simple plan, lets see what the car gods have in mind…

I'm only catching up tonight Dave. Happy New Year to you & MrsXB; I hope ye had a good Christmas.

The car is looking brilliant, when do you send it to the painters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

The painter wants the car at the start of Feb... so I'm working to that as a deadline for now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Daved_XB

I’ve measured up & welded in the boot lock bracket now, so that should be the last of the welding bits back on/in the car other than what’s needed for panel gap setting later

    IMG_9347.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9346.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ve finally finished stuffing about with the floors & I’m calling them done… in reality I could spend another month on them fixing tiny things but the simple reality is that there will be a thick coating of rubberised ute bed liner sprayed on this & also it’s the underside of the car so it’ll only ever be seen by me when I’m working on the car on the hoist… this will not be a fancy shiny show car that gets parked up with mirrors under it to show off the polished shiny underneath…

    IMG_9348.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With the metal all cleaned & treated I’ve mixed up the specific Etch Primer that comes with the Raptor liner kits..

    IMG_9351.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9350.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9349.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ve also done all of the above to the inside floor as well

    IMG_9354.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9353.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The Raptor liner that I’ll be using will be a thick textured coating that will be great for stone chip protection.. but as it will be textured there will be some parts of the underside that I won’t want covered in it as I’ll want a smooth surface, so I’m spraying them in a red paint that will be close to the actual final car colour, that way the whole underside of the car will be red & these sections that need to be smooth won’t just be the primer colour…

    IMG_9360.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9359.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

These parts are front spring mounts where the lower control arms of the 4 link rear end will attach

    IMG_9355.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The section where the front torque tube bracket bolts on

    IMG_9358.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Where the huge mumford link bracket attaches & where the coilover bracket bolts up

    IMG_9357.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The seam sealer I’m using can be sanded & painted over, so I’ve opted to apply it now over the primer but under the final Raptor liner layer… this stuff is super messy to try & work with but I’ve gone for a more is better approach here as I can sand it back once it’s fully cured tomorrow if I need to

    IMG_9367.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9366.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9365.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9364.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9363.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9362.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9361.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

All things being equal I should be able to get some time to mask up the car tomorrow evening after work & then hopefully I can tint up the Raptor liner & spray it on the weekend

I hated the process of masking up the car for painting… I just don’t seem to have the patience for this sort of job, but it’s done now… I used tape to cover the suspension bits I don’t want the liner on & I used those soft ear bud things to fill up the threaded bolt holes in the floor

    IMG_9368.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then it was just a load of taping paper to the car to cover off any bits I was worried I’d get overspray on… this took almost a full day to do… it could have been done quicker I guess if I didn’t spend the whole time telling myself just how much I hated doing it..

    IMG_9372.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Next task was to assemble my temp makeshift paint booth… I don’t mind spraying primer on stuff in the shed but I didn’t want this thick liner stuff floating about & dusting everything in the shed.. I bought a cheap $100 tent thing that I figured would work.. it’s just a simple tubular frame that slots together

    IMG_9376.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9377.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9378.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The roof section goes on next

    IMG_9379.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9380.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then I moved it into the shed

    IMG_9381.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Tested that I could spin the car over inside this new “booth”

    IMG_9383.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9382.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then I Velcroed on the side & end panels

The Ute bed liner paint is a simple system, they give you the bottle of liner & the exact measured bottle of hardener in each box, I bought the tintable version so I also needed some red 2K paint to mix in… I also bought the adjustable spray they sell that screws directly onto the bottle

This stuff goes on real nice… I’m really happy with how easy it was to spray on, this is still wet in the pics so I won’t know until tomorrow I guess how I did… but for now I’m really happy with how it looks

Now that I have unwrapped or unmasked the car… I’m soooooooooooooo soooooooooooooooo happy with how this stuff has turned out, it really looks great & I’m 100% sold on it for all of my cars, it’s supper easy to get the black or the white coloured variant here but sadly the tint-able one is a little harder to find, I have some on order so that I can do the whole inside of the car… I’m hoping that turns up by Friday as I’d really like to paint it before taking it off the rotisserie but I won’t delay taking her off said rotisserie waiting on the paint, I know that I can easily paint the interior floor pan with the car sitting level on the travel dolly I make up

    IMG_9403.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9402.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9401.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

& now outside in the sun to see it in natural light…

    IMG_9405.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9404.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ve done pretty well with colour matching for the sections I’d masked off that I wanted to be smooth for bolting suspension parts to too… so I’m really happy with that as well…

    IMG_9406.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I had half a 1ltr bottle left so I made a start on the inside of the boot with it already

    IMG_9407.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

One of the tasks that I definitely wanted to do with the car still on the rotisserie was to attach the suspension bracketry for the last time… so I’ve painted up the metal plates that bolt in on the inside

    IMG_9408.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’m very glad that this is the last time I’ll fit this big rear mumford link mount… it’s bloody heavy & a tight press fit, but it’s in & home now

    IMG_9409.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The painted brackets don’t stick out too bad in the boot

    IMG_9411.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The front Torque arm brace is in now too

    IMG_9413.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Again the inside plates look fine… plus these will be covered with the carpet & the seats ultimately… so I’ll also be welding these guys up as a captive bolts now that the bracket is in.. the simple reason being that if I ever need to loosen or tighten one of these in the future I don’t want to have to rip the seats & carpet out to do it… glad I’ve thought of that before it was too late…

    IMG_9412.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

So I think that’s pretty much the underside of the floor finished until I have the car back & I have to run fuel & brake lines etc…

I’ve sprayed all the inside floor of the car with the same Raptor liner as it has a sound deadening quality too… I’ve decided to even spray the parcel shelf since it gets covered up anyway, I’ve also sprayed all the inside of the boot & the inside of the rear QTRs..

    IMG_9425.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9424.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9423.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9422.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9421.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9419.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9416.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With that done I’ve packed up the paint booth for safe keeping until I need it again, which will probably be for the floors of the Dodge when I get around to that

    IMG_9420.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now it’s time to make up the travel dolly that the XB will live on until I get her back from the painters, I bought some lengths of 3mm thick 50mm square tube for the job… it’s probably overkill for what’s needed but I’d rather go thicker than risk it

    IMG_9426.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9428.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I spend so much time welding 0.8mm old rusty car panel metal that it was such a joy to be able to turn the welder up & just pull the trigger & not worry about blowing a hole in the metal… some days it’s the simple things

    IMG_9429.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

My painter has a portable scissor lift that he uses to lift the cars he’s painting so he can have them at the heights he wants.. so he’s given me the dimensions he would like it made too, he wants the whole thing 250mm off the deck so I’m making raised platforms for the castors to mount to

    IMG_9433.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9434.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I was going to be lazy & just weld the castors to the platforms but I decided to do it right & welded some flat plates on that I can bolt the castors to

    IMG_9435.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9438.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I then rolled the frame under the car so I can work out the uprights, I’m going to use the front lower control arm bolt holes for the front of the dolly & the rear leaf suspension eye holes for the rear mounts

    IMG_9439.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now onto a huge milestone for both the car & me…. I unbolted the rotisserie off the car!!!! I’ve double checked the dates… the car went onto this rotisserie on the 27th of December 2016…

    IMG_9442.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    Then the rear comes off

    IMG_9446.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ll clean this up & put it to one side until it’s time to put the Dodge on it so I can do the floors fully..

    IMG_9447.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I know that I’ve done nothing to the actual car here but she just looks more like a car now I think…

I keep/kept changing my mind on how much if any of the engine bay I wanted to paint in the Raptor liner stuff… this included the underside of the front chassis rails & engine crossmember etc… now when I was painting the car on the rotisserie (i.e. at the perfect time to do said painting) I’d decided that I wanted all of that metal painted by my painter in high gloss shiny paint to match the car… well I changed my mind the very first day AFTER pulling the car off the rotisserie (yes I’m that much of a ****ing Muppet)

Right so more masking up to be done so… I was again torn between where to paint & where not to paint, so I was thinking that I’d paint 100% of the underside along with the front crossmember & also the two sections that mount the front suspension & act as the radiator supports

    IMG_9454.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9453.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I did this masking up Monday evening but then decided not to paint that night but to sleep on it…. So I changed my mind again… Now I would not be painting the tops of the rad support sections after all…

    IMG_9455.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I wanted to paint any forward facing parts of the underside that would get stone strikes etc… so this is what I’ve painted up

    IMG_9456.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9457.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ve also painted the engine bay side of the front crossmember as this is in the path of stones thrown up too & also you don’t really see it from above once the engine is in but you tend to always scratch the paint in this area when installing & removing the engine & exhaust headers

    IMG_9458.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Next gap is fitting panels & sorting alignments & gaps… I promise… maybe

I had kind of half forgotten that the doors still needed some attention, the rear bottom outside corner of the driver’s side door had been hiding a rust hole under the bog/paint so that needs fixing

    IMG_9460.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9461.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9462.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

With that done I need to sort the much more awkward to get to internal rust issue… there is a long felt strip that bolts into the top of the door that guides the glass up & down without scratching it, it also traps water it seems & rusts out the door. Both doors are suffering this issue…

Let’s start with the passenger side door.. I ground back the surface rust to see if I could just do a weld up repair of the original metal

    IMG_9464.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9465.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Nope… it’s gone too far & needs to be cut out

    IMG_9466.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Patch made up.. you won’t see the fact that its curved once the felt strip, door trim & glass are all back installed but I’ve curved the patch a little to ease my OCD

    IMG_9467.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9468.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The drivers side was a little worse…

There is no way to get right into this spot to cut out the frame without cutting a hole in the door skin or cutting out the inners of the door… so I’ve just rust treated this section with a rust converter before covering it in etch primer

    IMG_9470.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9483.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Right that’s the doors ready to go back on… Bolted on the upper cowl panel & the original bonnet hinges

    IMG_9459.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now one of the special shaped captive nuts for the driver’s side hinge fell out years ago, but I had it… & I still have it… it’s in a safe place, it’s in an uber safe place…. It’s in a kind of captive nut protection programme run by the FBI…. I have no ****ing idea where I’ve put the bloody thing now… I’ve been ripping the shed apart, I’ll keep looking for another day or so but if I can’t find it then I’ll just weld in a normal nut to act as a captive nut.. it’s missing from the large hole at the top here

    IMG_9480.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I need to fit the rear lower valance panel…

    IMG_9473.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

As I’ve said before it doesn’t line up right now if I use the mounting brackets

    IMG_9477.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9478.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9472.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I can make it line up nicely if I don’t use the brackets so the back of the car is the right shape at least… this is a NOS panel so I know it’s the right XB shape

    IMG_9473.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

When I clamp it in the right spot you can see that the two brackets are off by half a bolt hole

    IMG_9475.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

The brackets are thin metal so I’m in two minds as to how to fix this, I can cut them off & re-weld them on or I can probably just heat them & persuade them with the assistance of the Muscle Car Special tool (hammer) to relocate the correct distance across

    IMG_9482.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I might fit the bumper back on first to see if moving the mounting brackets across is the only action I need to take… the bumper mounting brackets have 4 holes, but as some early XA coupes only used 3 the replacement sheet metal panel only have 3 holes when you get it… so I’ll need to add another hole there too

Right now it’s time for the frustrating fettling that is setting panel gaps… this will probably take all weekend, but such is life as they say… so back on with the doors

    IMG_9485.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9484.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Now the bonnet is quiet latterly thrown on here, so it’s nowhere near right in any direction that’s adjustable

    IMG_9486.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

Then the guards go back on

    IMG_9490.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9489.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9491.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9488.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

So here she sits for now…. Looking more like a complete car than she has in years..

    IMG_9495.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9494.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9493.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9492.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ll start adjusting the panels as close as I can & then I’ll throw the bumpers on & the front & rear lower valance panels & see how close to good I can get here to look

The job for the weekend was to mount up all the panels & the bumpers to see where I stand with regards to panel fitments… so I started with the rear bumper. The tap set would be getting a workout this weekend as I wanted to clean out all the threaded holes of the captive nuts on the car & most of the bolts need to be cleaned up of surface rust in the threads too

    IMG_9497.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9498.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9500.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9499.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

I’ve whacked the bumper on (a fun job on your own I can assure you… it weights a ton)

    IMG_9502.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

You can see it’s too far off to the drivers side & needs to be centred

    IMG_9504.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

    IMG_9503.JPG?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds

This isn’t a big deal, the original bolt hole slots in the chassis rails are elongated.. but the holes in the replacement rear panel that I welded in are just round, so all I’ll need to do here is slot the round holes to match the original.. I didn’t do it before now as I had no idea how far I’d need to slot them & I only want to go as far as I need
