    What part of Dublin?
Do you have a car or rely on public transport?

Pretty much any half decent gym will be friendly and helpful, it's in their best interest if they want you to stick around..

Depends on what your body can take really. I was doing double classes two or three times a week and hanging about afterwards to do some rolling as well, but it took a while to build up to that without dying.

I can get to anywhere in dublin do transport is not a problem. So you reckon they're all decent clubs and it doesn't make a difference which one I choose?

You have a decent choice of SBG's, Satori, Gracie Barra, Jorge Santos, Jungle, Team KF, Team Ryano, 10th Planet. I'm possibly forgetting a few.
Generally the BJJ community is fairly chill, we like helping each other.

Seconded the above post, the BJJ community is pretty friendly. I'd recommend getting a list of the most conveniently located gyms for you, asking for their timetable, then checking out which one fits best around your schedule.

Regarding how many times a week, I'm not sure there is a definitive answer for that but I will warn you its pretty addicting!

All good gyms, but some are probably stronger in some areas than others. I’d add royal grappling academy to the list too.

And location is hugely important. No point driving 30 mins when there’s an equal gym 10 mins away.

Most people train 2-4 times a week. The more you train the faster you’ll improve.

I can't speak for everyone but location is a big factor for me.

I struggled for ages to train consistently. Finally I moved house and found a small gym right across the road form me. It almost forces me to train. I have no excuse to miss a session.

It's raining? So? It's across the road.

I don't feel like it? So? It's across the road you'll be home in no time.

You're tight on time? Just as well the gym is close to your house!

I've lost count of the number of times i've stumbled across to the gym when I wasn't in the humour to train. They're always the best and most rewarding sessions.

My two cents, find somewhere close to your house

Looks like ... if you take a very generous reading ... BJJ clubs can continue to operate with 6 per class indoors.

If I’m honest I doubt BJJ is really what they are envisaging when they stipulate that it is provided there is appropriate physical distancing and reasonable precautions observed. I think we all guess they’re thinking of non contact activities rather than people rolling around hugging one another.

But I guess until things really become explicit a lot of places will reduce numbers to 6 and continue. If financially viable to do so.

The 6 includes the instructor, so 5 students.

    Definitely on the list.
Probably the best gym from a competitive jiujitsu point of view. Especially in Gi.

Man that sucks, we're up to 30+ split into two simultaneous classes.

Standard class on the mats with either a fundamental group or advanced group of up to 10 in the cage.

Been getting a lot of 2 on 1 time with the coach too.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,151 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

Well, seems like we’re at the stage where people are more likely to take generous readings of the guidelines to keep their clubs open. Seen talk of having multiple separated groups of 6 going at one time. I don’t think it’s what was intended but sure look, it’s a sport where people sweat in each other’s mouths sometimes ... we were doomed from the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,257 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Sport Ireland have updated the guidelines to read:

"Organised sports training within indoor facilities can do so in multiple pods of 6 once sufficient space is available and strict public health protocols are in place"

Anyone know of a good place for a female BJJ blue belt to cross train judo in Dublin? Asking for a friend.

I thought of Wild Geese, but is there anywhere else - ideally somewhere with a few other women training.

Not sure if its a bit far but I've heard some very good things about Swords Judo club. Not sure if they are currently doing classes or not at the moment.

Does she want to do BJJ at a club that also has some judo.
Or she currently has a BJJ club, and whats to do some extra training at a judo club?

The latter... Extra training at a pure judo club.

Try Portmarnock Judo Club. Very welcoming club with 3/4 female black belts training there fairly regularly.

Ah ok, can't help. But hopefully the clarity will be useful for others. Haven't see Makikomi about recently. But I've a feeling he has mentioned Portmarnock in the past.

If the goal is better judo for competition. I could her to schedule a private with Ffion Davis. Who should have a pretty good insight into using (or not using) judo effectively in female weight divisions verses the current BJJ meta.

A lot of Judo clubs still haven't reopened with Covid, I would recommend Paul Cummins School of Judo or Portmarnock. I know Portmarnock is definitely training at the moment but I don't think Paul's is back yet.

Swords Judo Club is mainly for younger children as they don't teach Adult classes.

If she wants to just learn Judo and develop skills quickly at, Coolmine Judo Club has a very strong but private coach. The classes are smaller and it's mainly with larger guys, but definitely a good place to visit.

Really? I'd be surprised if non Dublin gyms would accept Dublin folk on the mats considering the guidelines.

I thought almost everywhere was limiting who's on the mat to existing members.

Anyone doing any at home training? Guess theres not really much you can do except solo drills? Havent been able to train now since march and really missing it. Was even considering getting a grappling dummy but seems like most people say theyre a waste of money

I have zero space in this shoe box apartment to do pretty much anything.
Started doing some yoga so I don't seize up completely as I just about have space for that in the hall.

Coach asked me to step in for the Gi classes while he was away/in-quarantine.
Tonight was the first night. Sort planned out a bit of the class, sort of just winged it a bit. Focused whole class on triangles.
Went well, I think. Really makes you think about all the little movements you do automatically when you explaining it step by step.

Yeah. Been blue for a while. My coach wants me to get some coaching experience as part of the grading. So was good timing.

I got a dummy when the first lockdown came around. Luckily my gym reopened when the restrictions were lifted so I was able to get some training in before this new lockdown.

I decided that I was gonna use the dummy for drilling armbars, triangles etc but I gotta say, I stopped using it after a week or so. It's just not the same!

Yeah every video i watched about dummies on youtube said the same thing, great for a week or two, then gathers dust! I do at-home workouts all week tho so ill just try and incorporate some BJJ specific movements or drills into them i guess :(

During the last lockdown I concentrated on stretching but mostly cardio. I hate running, but I took it up and was doing a 5k every day or at least every second day. On days when my knees were a bit fecked, I jumped on the bike.

Now, of course as soon as I was back rolling I was still wrecked as that's a very specific type of cardio, but it definitely helped and I noticed I was in a slightly better shape than those who hadn't been doing any cardio and I was able to get back into rolling-condition quicker than the other too.

Hoping these restrictions are only for the announced 3 weeks and we'll be back in the gym soon but somehow I doubt it!

Cool video. Was a huge win for Geo. The event as a whole was pretty exciting.
You should do some more. As a suggestion, what about Lachlan Giles run at Kinetic? A quintet event where he swept the other team.

To work with a dummy effectively, you need low expectations, a lot of duct tape and patience.

I got one when the initial lockdown happened, it was a free sample so I didn't really care if it worked. I tried to triangle, arm bar etc, and it was ****e.

I came to the realisation that they are decent for reps and generating muscle memory so I started using it for drilling open guard passes, going to knee on belly, window wipers, back takes but it was too floppy. I packed it with sand and clothes initially but it was too heavy and flopping down, so I took the sand out and repacked it tightly with old clothes and then duct taped the limbs into the position I was drilling and that was significantly better.

They will never replace a live training partner, but when used with the right movements, they can be somewhat effective for repping.

    I don’t have a dummy, but I agree with this 100%.
They don’t have the form or posture of a human so aren’t useful for drill moves that require connection.
But on the other side, the posture-less dummy is useful for moves that require disconnection.

Stepping around the legs, back stepping, drop spinning etc.

Welcome to the longest belt of all time :-P

It's a great belt though, you can still mess around with ideas and styles but you get more polished and figure out what suits you best. It's like the teenage years again :-)

Urgh, i know that feeling. Im still at white belt even tho i started training almost 4 years ago. Missed about a year in total due to asthma issues and other stuff, now covid has screwed me over as i havent trained since march. Feels like ill never get past white at this point, but feck it, one of the best things about training at 10th planet is i stopped caring so much about belts when you dont wear one :D Tho i turn 41 in a few weeks, and i have promised myself that come hell or high water, before i hit 50, im getting blue'd... that's achievable right, another 9 years? :D

Anyone watch Quintet 5 there the other week? Some great grappling on display, but bit disappointing as almost every match was a draw. The match between fatninja and haisam rida was great tho, if quick

I trained on and off for the best part of 10 years before getting my blue belt aged 39.

    Keep at it.

I got my blue by going to a grading (is that even the right word for it?) to see what they were like, so I knew what to expect when I figured I was ready to go for it, so you never know when it'll happen :)

No harm in asking your coach... where does he feel you are and what does he feel you need to work on. Just make sure you let him know that you're not looking for your blue, you just want to see where you need to be and that you love the training. As a coach, I would have no problem if a student asked me this. It's also a fair question as you been at it for so long... if you were training less than a year, or just over a year, it's not something I would recommend.

Purple is generally longer, it's where you become a demi professor and you do a lot of learning.

I have gone back to a lot of things I learned at white and added them to my game. When I learned them originally, I ignored as they were not a piece of my puzzle at white belt, but I have since revised them and they have become a staple in my game... things like side guard, X / half X and DeLa Riva. I have a solid game from almost all positions and I have also cut back on aspects that I was heavily reliant on, such as electric chair from deep half.

I find myself getting into positions and rather than going for what I am comfortable with, I stop and work on aspects that I feel will progress my game, or give me new options. Rather than fighting to apply the sub, I am switching tact and using the opponents movements to dicate where I need to go with the sub.

I'm probably close to brown but I know my fitness holds me back. I have been working on this since the first lockdown. I know that if my fitness is better, I wont revert to my staples and my head will be clearer which will allow me to work my full game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,603 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

I know that statistically it’s about to be about 3 years at each on average. But brown feels more unreachable than purple ever did.
I suppose because purples have always been regularly on the mats at most gyms. Where as browns are probably the least common belt I’ve seen.

My game changed a lot over the course of blue. Have an idea what I want to go with it now. Just have to get the time in to work the kinks at.
