Anyone know why Barnes was so anxious to talk to Cian Healy after Stockdales try? 1.57.20

Barnes was looking for sharpening tips for his dinner knives.

Looked like Healy came into celebrate before the try had been awarded and blocked Barnses view of the grounding somewhat. Didn't look serious either way.

sorry 58:50 . i'm far from an expert but if the ball is on top of bodies on the ground , they're out of the game and the ball is considered the same as on the ground ? How is that not a ruck ? is it because the ruck has ended because there are no all blacks on their feet ?

Simply the wrong call by barnes... he called saveau as the first man in, when goodhue had been cleared out by dev and stander

should have been a penalty our way.

    edit:
actually on closer review... goodhue actually stole the ball and got it back it on top of the tackled player.. and barnes was right to call him "first man in"

sorry, 58:50 . my only reasoning of this is that the ruck is over when there are no more all black left on their feet in the ruck, ball is in open play so the all black can go in and take it . However what if the ball was between the feet of an irish rucking player ? surely he can't go in around the back and grab the ball. i'm inclined to say the ref made a mistake unless we conclude that nobody were on their feet so that would clear everything up because it's open play there and would still have been a ruck if there was one irish player left on their feet (after the all black had been cleaned out of the ruck) . A bit complicated but not that hard i suppose. Is it a ruck is the main question . The part about the ball not being on the ground, my take if the ball is on a player who's out of the game, then it's as if the ball is on the ground.
i'm sure there are more people here who know the game way better than i do (i'm a gaa background mostly, though i like rugby a lot). thanks

exactly, i should have made it clearer. A slightly better all black team probably would have scored in the end with more switched on supporting runners

Is 'switched on' another term for 'pacey'?

well that ruck, and situation, has nothing to do with the altered offisde law that is being referred to above... barnes calls out why the play was allowed, in that he deemed jack goodhue as first man in....which means he was on his feet over the ball, so he was allowed to play the ball with his hands before he was cleared out, which he did... and did enough to get the ball back up to a playable position so ardie savau could just pick it up and play on.

a ruck is over when the ball is taken from it, which is what goodhue did... so its open play after that

Yeah, Henderson is one of the common denominators in the 2 games where line outs were, or became, an issue. The other is no POM. Without Toner and POM our options at line out are reduced and if we have someone who isn’t that used to calling line outs at this level doing it in that scenario there is going to be a drop off. It’s one thing we need to develop before the RWC.
    bilston wrote: »
Well if you're going to be like that I'd point out that there was another second row who was present on both occasions you reference!

Surely there are usually 7 players in the lineout. The common denominators are 7 Irish players plus the hooker.

Not sure if it was posted already here, but 1014 had an interesting stat:

Only twice this season have NZ had a lower tackle success % than the opposition (both against SA), where they won one and lost one.

The match on Saturday was the only time they've had a higher tackle success % than the opposition and lost.

Christ lads this seems like decades ago ??

Might as well be, it’s over 6 months ago and has zero relevance anymore

I doubt NZ care about it....

Too many fans looking back on this match, too many players using this game as reason to stay in team....Ireland needs to move on and quickly....

I suppose the only real relevance (especially in the context of the RWC), is that now we know we can beat them. As opposed to previously where we may have believed it, but hadn't actually done it.

I have a strange recollection of a plane, loads of Irish rugby fans....chicago....loads of beers, it then gets very blurry for 3 days but in the middle part I remember some lads in green and black jerseys running around a pitch and the green boyos winning.....cue more beer and then craziness :p

In that case I'd put money Richie McCaw's son lifting the Webb Ellis trophy before that's written.
