Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi everyone . I am new to this forum. I go to school in cork and am sitting my j.cert this year.

As a way of introducing myself i would like to start a pop quiz. Same rules person A answers a question and if they are right they can ask person B another question. And so on...........

    Here we go.

State ohms law? Both in words and in figures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Merged these threads together since there was already a sticky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

Ohms law states that current is proportional to voltage as long as the temperature remains constant

    or: R=V/I

Explain what happens or why I am doing it at each of the points marked with a star ("*")

    I am cooking some rice.

I place water in sauce pan and put it on the heat.

After a few minutes it starts to boil and bubble*, I add some salt*. For a moment it bubbles more*, but then settles down*.

After a few minutes it starts to boil again*, I add the rice. For a moment it bubbles furiously*, but then settles down.

I cover the saucepan*, reduce the heat* and let the rice cook.

Quite clearly the above actions prove that you were hungry at the time and that you have a high Sodium intake.

    NOT obsession just curiousity:cool:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,491 ✭✭✭✭Victor

1 After a few minutes it starts to boil and bubble*, The water is boiling.

2 I add some salt*. Salt increases the boiling point of water.

3 For a moment it bubbles more*, Bubbles form readily on edges and corners, meaning there is a temporary increase in boiling.

4 but then settles down*.The rapid increase in boiling in the last point has made the water cool slightly, also the salt is dissolving.

5 After a few minutes it starts to boil again*, the water has reached the higher boilling point for water + x amount of salt.

6 I add the rice. For a moment it bubbles furiously*, Point 3 is repeated, but with lots more edges and corners.

7 but then settles down. Point 4 is repeated (but the rice does not dissolve).

8 I cover the saucepan*, This insulates the top surface, reducing heat loss through evaporation / convection.

9 reduce the heat* The water is as hot as is needed, only a little heat (equal to heat loss) is needed to keep it at this temperature.

    OK, new question.

What types of heat loss exist in the above scenario?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

    Evaporation
    Conduction
The Heat being changed to kinetic energy of the water.

    Do I win?

No, you are missing at least two.

    conduction, convection, radiation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,491 ✭✭✭✭Victor

Much better. A minor loss would be through vibration / noise.
