Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Here's the list just for football teams. Pretty interesting stuff. It shows just how impressively run United and Arsenal are in terms of wage control to still be up there competing with the rest of them.

A little shocked to see chelsea third, for some reason I just assumed they were miles ahead of everyone else in wages.

    Portsmouth and Villa dangerously high.

How old is the list? Portsmouth are still listed as being in the EPL

It was just released from ESPN today. I think they just have EPL to refer to all English teams frankly, not that it was made when Portsmouth were in the PL.

Middlesborough are listed as English D2

Its clearly a very dated list. Valencia, Celtic and Rangers wouldn't be paying anything like that money anymore. I would assume Man City are higher than Chelsea this year.

How did they get the figures?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,177 ✭✭✭TheTownie

Probably based on the 09/10 accounts of clubs (or whatever their financial period for that year was).

Very surprised to see Barcelona spending so much on wages .

Really? Messi doesnt play for the good of his health, hes on amazingly high wages. Same with other people like Xavi, Inestia, etc.

If its based on 09/10...and theres no Bohs? Thought they'd be muscling Real out atleast.

    Why?

    Messi
    Xavi
    Iniesta
    Puyol
    Villa
    Valdes
    Mascherano
    Abidal
    Alves etc..

These guys all command big wages,

The list is a little dated imo though, City should be well up on it due to the last couple of years, they are probably outspending everyone in england at the moment in wages, with the possible exception of Chelsea

But Chelsea did ship out a few recently, Ballack and the likes to bring the bill down a bit

If it's the 09/10 season then the reason Barca are so much higher than everyone else is because of the bonuses when winning those 6 trophies. Not that bad a predicament to have I suppose.

There's only 66 teams on that list?

The other 134 are other sports.

Chelsea spend £40m more than Manchester City on wages - Premier League, Football - The Independent

Chelsea paid £40 Million more in the year to June 2010 which made the splashing the cash on Torres and Luiz very surprising. City's obviously would have risen since but they are putting a lot of players out on loan so it mighn't be that much.

The figure they have for each team, what is it the average of?

Edit: Average annual salary per player. Lord.

The list is not dated for the sake of it, I presume it is based on the latest available financial reports. To get current figures, we'll have to wait for annual reports and so forth.

I'm shocked that the best paid NFL team are The Redskins ,in 70th place overall .
I'd have though NFL players would have been more highly paid but then again the squads are huge (Lower average) and there is a salary cap.
Its a sign of the times that football has overtaken the US sports in salary demands.

French football doesn't pay well, it seems.

French football doesn't pay well, it seems.

The French league (and Russian, Ukranian and Turkish leagues for that matter) weren't even part of the survey. It'd be likely that a few clubs from those leagues would be in the list, though near the lower end.

Bundesliga, EPL+C, La Liga, MLS, Serie A & SPL were the only 6 'soccer' countries/leagues included in ESPNs '200 best paying teams in the World' survey*.

I can see UTD going up the list a bit after breaking the wage structure for Rooney.

Don't know how Inter intend on surviving their wage bill is ridiculous considering they have for the year ending June 30, 2009, and reported an enormous loss of €154 million

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,818 ✭✭✭✭28064212

One big thing that's not taken into account is the net/gross salary difference across countries. A footballer in Spain on 200,000 receives a lot more than a footballer in England on the same wage

    They're bankrolled by Massimo Moratti.

Though they do have plenty of work to do to get in line with the FFP rules.

Its a sign of the times that football has overtaken the US sports in salary demands.

Not really fair to say, salary caps prevent teams from overspending on one player e.g. LeBron James (NBA) only makes $15m a year and Peyton Manning (NFL) only makes $15m a year also. In a free market they'd easily earn double that.

Even though the NBA has smaller rosters they are capped at a certain amount and fined heavily for exceeding it. If they exceed the limit, for every $1 they spend on a player they have to give a $1 to the NBA. So the cap is at $60m a year but as you can see teams like the Lakers and Celtics will exceed that by $10-$15m a year...then multiple that by 2.

NFL has a cap which cannot be broken and rules to prevent a team having to spend all their money on one player. Also the average is spread out over 50+ players. The salary cap is around $140m a year and the majority of teams max out their cap.

Baseball has no cap so its the leader of all sports in spending. A-Rod $30m a year while soccer's Ronaldo is $20m a year.

To add to Hazy's above post:
"Average Annual Salary" represents base player salaries from current or most recently completed seasons from each sport, and excludes endorsements, bonuses, appearance fees and any other source of extra compensation.

Thus, given the degree to which appearance money and bonuses make up such a sizeable portion of players' wages, that list is completely unreliable.
