    Had a few jobs planned for this weekend discs and pads on the wife's nissan note, and rocker cover gasket on my own. Parts ordered and were out for delivery quicker than I thought. Only for them to land here this morning with the box in tatters, I wouldn't mind but the box of pads inside was also in bits. There was a loose screw sitting on top of the pads box, and was worried there were bits missing so had to refuse them. God damn it.

    My old and new-ish (reconditioned ) turbocharger for my audi . Work wasnt that bad as i was thinking. id say 4 hours, with some puzling , tea breaks and colecting new turbo.

    So the GF mini cooper had a fight with a pheasant at 60mph and lost....resulting bird exploded into the bumper and caused a bit of cosmetic damage to say the least. She wasnt that fussed and now comes the time to change the car and obviously looks a state. Ebay came to the rescue with a suitable bumper for the mini in the same colour, swapped over the salvageable bits from the old and ordered a new bottom spoiler and a few clips from BMW (it was cheaper from them direct than patent parts from Ebay).

    After the above....was someway sorted on Saturday I had been given the task of sorting out a possible replacement for bangernomics kind of money and went about getting it on Sunday. Ebay provided the car.

    I found an absolute diamond when trawling through the usual over modded, clocked and abused cars especially in this category. I am based in the UK for the last number of year hence its easier for me to find and view. Found this little pocket rocket... 225bhp Audi TT (Mk1) Quattro first registered in 2003 for a few hundred quid shy of 2k (standard equipment includes Xenons, climate and white leather interior). Massive history file (receipts for tyres, service parts even down to bulbs) the previous owner had it for a number of years. Timing belt, tensioner and water pump was replaced prior to buying as well as a large service (spotted a brand new Mann Oil filter). The usual TTs weaknesses were addressed new coil springs (they seem to snap them) and the driver computer was reconditioned (they lose pixels as the car ages). The car even included 12 months test!! Its still rather quick (when it first came out it could do 0-60 in a shade over 6 seconds and still can leave many cars in its wake)!

    Only thing its needs is the Haldex oil and filter changed, new wipers and the white leather seats cleaned and conditioned.

    I put new pads and discs on the Mk2 Fiesta over the weekend and changed the brake fluid. All done for less than 50 euro. I love how cheap the parts are for that car.

    The brakes are still rubbish though lol. But at least I have a bit of confidence in knowing they are new.

    Going to keep my eye out for some XR2 calipers and a mondeo servo and do a swap.

    As I couldn't get the oil filter cap off my Fiat Bravo the last time, I went to a garage this time.

    I supplied the oil and filter, plus I asked them to take a look at my left front end as I could hear a clunk.

    In the end did the oil and changed a drop link. Oil change (With my oil + filter) was 35 and the single drop link change was 45. So 80 all in.

    Is this a decent price? I know the drop link change is an easy job but I presume I wasn't ripped off.

    What do you mean ripped off? Did you even factor in the mechanics hourly rate?
    If you think you are being ripped off, buy a haynes manual and learn to do the basic jobs yourself.

    Them bastard of a drop links can be a bitch to get off when on car a long time. That's was a pretty reasonable price to be honest.

    No I said I presumed I wasn't ripped off in fact.

    I actually presumed the price was low really and the service is excellent.

    swapped out the 2 nasty rear hubcaps for the genuine articles to match the fronts. 20 quid for the pair on ebay.

    avensis is running like a dream a couple of thousand miles in.
    checked to see if the air filter was changed.

    Oil is still at the full. sorted the tyre pressures which were all over the shop. Getting 40 mpg now. Grand job. A pair of front pads should see it through the winter.

    Took out the Chinese double DIN unit and put the original radio in.
    Also gave it a good clean inside as I’m going selling it.

    Did a few bits to the 5 series. It needed a oil change and a few service items.
    • Oil filter
    • Oil (5w-30 BMW LL-04 Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3)
    • Air filter
    • microfilter (carbon filter)

    I also used my amazon ENET cable along with my old laptop to reset the CBS (condition based servicing). I one thing I did find surprising is that the items which are ment to be torqued to spec (i.e. the oil filter housing and sump plug) I had to absolutely swing off of with a 1/2 drive on the ratchet in order to shift them. Both are meant to be torqued to 25NM and this car has a full BMW service history :mad: Anyways when I was finished both were torqued to their correct spec this time so that when the car is serviced again it should be a lot easier.

    The microfilter wa acually very clean. I fitted an upgraded carbon filter version rather than the normal one. BMW charge around 80GBP for the ordinary one. The Bosch one was around 25GBP for the carbon version.

    The service interval on the idrive was also reset via the diagnotic port.

    I also took the opportunity to update the mapping on the professional idrive to the 2019-2 version via USB.

    Another item ticked off the list. Lights on the boot bugged me as they were faded and full of grime. Polishing wasn't going to help much so ordered a new pair.

    4 trim clips and 2 nuts - job done in 10 mins :cool:

    I wish, its the 520d but its the LCI version so its the B47 engine (same one thats fitted to the new G30 5 series). The engine bay is massive though persumably lower production cost for the different engine variants that were available on the F10.

    Thinking of buying this as a replacement jack. The 2 I have now are absolute cheapies, bought for peanuts so I'm looking for something more substantial and easier to use:

    The two trolley jacks I have at the minute are cheapies also that do not lift high enough. I used a piece of timber a few times to gain extra height until one day it slipped and nearly destroyed my side skirt. I just gave the side skirt a wack and the clips re-engaged but if you know where to look it is not 100% right.

    Yep. My lidl special still works, about 6 years after I bought it. But I have the same problem, not low enough, not high enough. I think I'll do it then. I've been doing a lot of jobs of late so having an easy/quick jack that is stable is worth the 144 quid (minus 10%).

    I've a spare space saver from the GS if you want it BTW..

    I bought a full size wheel for mine and it fitted in the well I couldn't stand the thought of that awful yellow wheel on should I have got a puncture...

    - replaced front and rear discs and pads
    - replaced front fog light bulb
    - replaced jubilee clip around nearside CV boot
    - repaired headlamp lugs with an epoxy thing I picked up in the motor factors

    All on the wife's Grand Scenic

    In the last couple of weeks (week and a half ish) I've done a few bits and bobs to the new is250.

    Oil and filter change: Oil came out of it thick as tar, not impressed. I was suspicious of this when I was looking at the oil on the dip stick, but it was worse than I thought when I emptied it. I reckon I'll do another oil and filter change in a few months as a way of flushing it.

    Intake pipe upgrade: There's an air pipe from the airbox to the throttle body and on new gs models there's a 'sound creator' air pipe installed. This is a modified intake pipe with what I can only describe as a horn pointing towards the cabin. There's a diaphragm inside that opens over 3,000rpm and blasts lovely intake noise into the cabin. It's amazing, the noise makes it sound like something way bigger and faster than it is. All of this came from a random ebay find, these parts are almost impossible to get so it was a really lucky one. And an OEM Lexus part too.

    Rear brake pads: The rear pads were almost worn to the metal. So this was the first job I did. Not too bad, although I did make a mess of the fitting kit when removing the pads on the first side. So had to order a new metal retaining clip which was annoying.

    NEXT UP:

    1. Idler pulley and belt replacement. There's a bit of noise from the aux belts. Ordered a new idler pulley and belt, so I'll pull off the old belt and see what's what with the rest of the pulleys and change the idler while I'm there.

    2. PCV: Super easy valve to change on these engines, no reason for changing it really. It's cheap and easily done so why not.

    3. Spark plugs. Who knows if these have ever been done, so I've ordered 6 to pop in. Quite an annoying job to do, as access is limited. So quite a lot has to come off the top of the engine to get access.

    And to top it off I just bought the new jack. It's amazing, hard to believe just how high it lifts compared to the old ones. And seems much sturdier and easier to use. Should make it easier for me to actually do these jobs.

    Annddddd aux belt changed with idler pulley. Old belt looked old enough so good to swap that out. Old pulley was actually perfectly fine. But swapped out regardless. It does run nice and sweet now. I do have to remind myself that it's a V6 and not a lovely balanced I6 that I'm used to.

    And the new jack was amazing. Lifted the car effortlessly and the process was much quicker and easier than before. No more will I be unwilling to do jobs based on the time it'll take me to get it in the air.

    Removing wheel arch trim and front bumper: Pull wheel arch trim (carefully) towards you.

    Remove phillips head screw located under the wheel arch trim, which hold on the bumper just below the wing and pull bumper forward!

    Perspex boy is held in with two 10mm bolts and four push-release clips!

    Ha! But so many of the jobs on here are about as difficult as all the messing about getting that grill replaced.
