Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

yea just the 6,700yrds par 71 of the Whites
and the course record is -4 by some fellow called Woods.
this could be a day when lost ball numbers are nearly 1 a hole :pac:

Looking forward to this, even if i will end up losing all my balls. Think i'll be keeping the driver in the bag quite a bit...that's the only thing that saved me in Enniscrone last year.

Guys we just had someone pull out today, I know some things come up at the last minute but as we had to confirm numbers yesterday, the society has to still pay for this slot unless we can fill it.
When courses are subsided, can you please please ensure you can play or it costs us money. We’re not in it for any profit and every cent goes back into the society but this will have to come out of our prize pot now

If anyone else was undecided about playing, please let us know now.
    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,159 ✭✭✭benny79

The key to The European is course management not length.. Driver definitely be in the bag depending on wind. and yes the man himself has the course record.. Tiger Woods :)

Just to let people know we have one slot free now if any member of the society thinks they might be able to make it!

    Please Pm me.

in fairness there was enough warning given.
extremely bad form and unfortunately not for the first time and I fear it won't be the last time. player was not a regular, and not even a regular posted by the looks of it
we are a society built around this forum. if you want to be part of it, at least join in from time to time and don't just be in it for the golf.

apparently he "doesn't have to explain himself to anyone"

well he certainly won't have to explain himself here in the future as he won't be invited anymore

I'm happy to pay a couple of quid more to cover the cost of the green fee if everyone else is!

I would feel the same, would rather pay a couple extra quid than see the winner shorted. The winner of this event will deserve a solid prize!

Happy to throw in a few extra euro as well.

    Yeah, count me in too.

I might be able to get a guest to come along. Its very short notice but at €50 for the European he might be very tempted. At least it covers the spot.

Let me know and I'll contact him.

The fee is €50 for boards society members only Macker as its being subsidised a fair bit by the society not fair to give a guest that rate..

    I completely understand ........

Bearing in mind that €50 coming in at this late stage is better than the society having to take the hit.

What is the rate for a visitor to this event ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 702 ✭✭✭Golfhead65

I've no problem paying extra, sure 2 euro a head well covers it, but would it set a precedent for others to pull out and not G.A.F**k as they'll think it will be covered, I presume the pull out is not a regular and no hope of adding the fee to their next outing !!

A very solid point, but what could be done to prevent this going forward? This event is clearly an exception to the regular operation, perhaps some thought on procedures for such prestigious/expensive course should be considered? I certainly would like the society to continue to play at least one course of this level on an annual basis, if possible.

For example, should the society require only paid members to be eligible to register for the event? Or require some form of pre-payment or guarantee?

    Lads,

Unfortunately this is the nature of the beast. We are a internet golf society were new members are most welcome.. Hence why we give out warnings for lads to make sure they are 100% committed. Especially for the big courses as they cost more obviously..But the more members that go to events the cheaper we get them and the more money we have! with regulars we ask that they pay the Fee if the are a late drop out at last minute to an event at the next one and some still don't!!

Every penny that is given in from fees and membership is put back into the society in Prizes & getting the rates down on top courses. Its a hard juggle and as a internet society its harder than most hence why I asked for membership in full off people who are playing The European (most have by the way) We just can't have blow in's availing of the cheap rate and then never to be seen again as I'm sure you all understand. The person that dropped out won't be playing with us again this has being decided this year that's all we can really do.

Newindublin - Obviously we love to cut this out but it happens thankfully the first one this year and hopefully the last.. But you have no idea the time and organisation that goes into organising events so we try to keep things as simple as possible..

I really appreciate all you saying you don't mind paying a bit extra! It makes me love this society even more! Its better than most as we have folks who travel from all over this beautiful Island. All golf nuts just like ourselves with all different playing abilities we don't discriminate :). We even have a few different nationalities! I feel like the society is like a mini tour! well the nearest we will ever get.. bear in mind some lads are travelling 3+ hours to The European..

The fee is €50 and it stands.. The European is one of the best courses in this country, ranked in the top 100 in the world and by far the best course I have played and I have played some top ones but that's my opinion.. You par the 6th and you have beaten Tigers bogey ;) The Ruddy family who own and run it are some of the nicest people you will meet & I only ever played it once! The sun will be shining and we have it in April!

So lets move on and look forward to Saturday as I for one can't wait! It's one of the main reasons I took the Captaincy this to me is my Augusta :D

    Regards

    Benny

Here here Benny, well said as there’s a lot of work in the background to get these bigger courses at good rates and plan the whole years outings. Looking forward to it and the weather you’ve organised again for us this time :)

Enjoy guys! very jealous - hope to meet you all and join you on the next one!

I've already posted saying I can't make it and to enjoy it, the weather looks super.
I played the European a few months after it was open so have no memory of if and would have loved another stab.

For all those who are going, you'll get battered but be able to tick the 'played it' box.

In my own society we are quite flexible on last minute pull outs but on courses where we rent the tee time and have to commit then the rule is simple, if you can't make it on the day then you pay the full costs as if you were there, it's a simple rule and no one has ever had an issue with it.

    Enjoy it guys and gals

Ah I do appreciate so a huge amount of work goes into the setup. I was hoping to find a way to make it easier when it comes to the big events, not more work!

Looking forward to it, thanks again for all the hard work getting it set.

You won't get food if you are wearing denim. Only place I've seen the rule enforced.Just in case you are planning on eating in clubhouse.

Food is good there by the way

The European don't have food (or didn't). Go down to Jack's Tavern for food. It's about 5/10 minute drive away and food is great.

Edit: when did a restaurant open in it? I always thought they had no food

Yeah, i had a look for some info on the site and youtube, but there's not a lot. Did find a site that described a few holes, and they sound pretty great.

Really looking forward to it now, regardless of how i play :)

    Are the fairways awful narrow??
Not hitting that straight the last couple of rounds . Might have to go 3 wood off the tee aswell

Yes. There's a proper grass range.

Anyone remember where the range is - is it down the road from the links?

The better question is "is there more sand than fairway" ;)

First up,A big thanks to Captain Benny on securing today's course and also apologise for bringing Benny,Kilth and Tiger down to my bad level of golf but if ever you can be happy after a bad day on the course it was today as that has to be the best course and experience of a golf course I've ever had and I've played quite a few top courses, next year's Captain has a hard act to follow..

Easter weekend, one of the toughest courses on the east coast, a night shift, white tees. Not an ideal combination by a long shot.

But, that is the way at times, at the Boards Golf Society outings – everyone has made a savage commitment to get there, everyone has something they have done to go play a game of golf they probably shouldn’t. if you were to think everything through in a rational way. You would play every week at your club, with the same 4 lads, talking about “the football”.

Benny always promises “the sun to split the stones” – as I raised up the hill in Brittas Bay, the sun shining and the sea as still as you ever see on the east. I had a little laugh to myself. Thank the un-risen lord, Muhammad, princess Leia and Benny.

The European Club is tough enough without ideal conditions. You literally could not get nicer weather or condition in April. What a feeling after a little warm up to walk to that first tee.

Gerry Ruddy was there to meet us, you could not get a better welcome. Filling us all in on the information needed. Formal, but fun. It was so refreshing, it is golf at the end of the day, we all love golf. It is about the golf there. No fake formality, but balanced seriousness and fun and friendly.

I’ve played The European Club 4 times now. But it is a course that is hard to put your finger on. It is a links “yes”, it is coastal “yes”, it is part inland “yes”, it is hilly “yes”, it is flat “yes”, it is fair “yes”, it is tough “yes”. It is many things, but at times contrasting and confusing.

The best courses, don’t give everything up after 4 visits. It takes way more time and mistakes and life lessons and knowledge.

None of us in our group played our best – but we had a great day (offaly Medic, A Posk Punk, Doublecross.) We spent a good bit of the round giving the course too much respect at the wrong times and not enough at the right times. We had a bit of extra time on one of greens (the 12th) and we had a 100 yard long putting contest - what a bizarre but brilliant green.

I hit a bit of a wall at times – and had enough caffeine in me that I’d fail a Tour de France drug test.

With wind/sun burn, battered bodies and cards – we had a debriefing in the clubhouse. The course on a perfect day had mauled 90% of the field.

Golf is just so hard at times, and a course like that can make you question why, why, why – do the travelling and put the effort in. But that is why I love Links and courses like that. You can love and can hate them in equal measures – on the same day, the same round, the same hole.

It was great to catch up with some of the old faces and friends of the past in the Clubhouse.

There is talk of moving to yoga as opposed to golf. It is gathering a bit of momentum. But momentum needs movement and we couldn’t move. Golf or yoga with strangers form the Internet – time for a cold beer to think that one over.

Standing on the crazy 15th green after a daft 6, I was angry, such a simple hole (scratch) – I looked back along the incredible long coastal stretch of holes. The sea was picture perfect, the golf holes were stretched as far as the heat and sea haze would allow you and your imagination to see. I had a moment of caffeine induced enlightenment.

On Easter weekend – a little saying, my "auld lad" use to say to me came into my head – “this is heaven” – I guess only he knows for sure. But it felt like it for that short moment.

What a day lads – thanks to all involved.
