Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Introduce yizzer selves.....

    Post night-shift insomnia strikes again.....

I thought it might be a good idea to have an "introduce yourself" thread in here. It seems we have a lot of people with a lot of different skills and interests, and it would be good to know who everyone is.

    I'll get the ball rolling.

I'm Tallaght01. I've been trying to incorporate the word "yizzer" into my vocabulary again recently. It was my favourite word at school :P

I'm a doctor. A neonatology registrar to be precise. I'm from Tallaght, but I currently work in Glasgow. I love it there because I've a deep interest in public health/socio-economic determinants of health. Glasgow has possibly the most deprived communities in Europe. Not going to stay in hospital medicine for a lot longer though. Gonna work abroad again from next september. When my feet are less itchy I'm hopefully going to pursue a career in public health back in Ireland.

My main interests within medicine are:

    1) socio-ecomic determinants of health

    2) Health of fostered/adopted kids

    3) Epidemiology of infectious diseases (HIV in particular)

    4) The word "Yizzer"

    5) Oh, and neonatology :P

I also did a BSc in Biomedical sciences before I went to medical school, so like the nerdy science chat that goes on here sometimes too ;)

I'm r3nu4l (pronounced Renewal), BSc and PhD in Molecular Biology with particular interest in drug resistance mechanisms.

I did a 3 year post-doc to develop a novel immunodiagnostics assay before moving into the world of Medical communications where I project manage and write across a number of fields including endocrinology (Type 2 Diabetes in particular), Oncology (Breast Cancer in particular), GI disturbances, renal disturbance and dialysis, cardiovascular disease etc.

I'm mainly interested in the science of medicine.

I'm from Lucan but working in Cambridge :)

My name is InFront (no really, it is!) and I'm a wee medicine undergraduate who still doesn't know his olecranon from his coccyx. One day I hope to become a professional football player, but I might have designs on something in pharmacology if that doesn't work out, you know just as a back-up plan:)

    Hi,
I'm Jimoslimos, originally from Dublin but living in London now. Graduated couple of years ago with BSc double honours in Biology and Chemistry.

Working as a research assistant in the R+D department of a large multinational healthcare company. Major interests immunoassay development - particularly the application of novel tumour markers. Also like to keep informed on recent scientific developments and the general public's perception of.

Like my current job but would really like to go and do a research masters and perhaps a PhD in a few years. Not sure in what specific area though.

    Hola

My name is bigjim and I'm from Dublin. Someone else decided that he was also big jim, so I thought of the first thing that came into my head, so I settle with bigjimthefirst. Sounded funny at the time, honest.

As of 2 Mondays ago, I'm a final year medical student in UCD. I'm based in Vincent's, and I'm currently on my Psychiatry rotation. I will hopefully be graduating in May '08, and starting as an intern in July '08. At this stage I'm interested in doing Medicine long-term, and my current masterplan is to do gastroenterology. I'm sure this will change about 8000 times by the time I start my first job as a reg.

My name is John (who'd have thunk it!?!) and I'm currently doing a PhD in the psychology department in Maynooth on the neural basis of memory, particularly hippocampal and cortical areas related to spatial memory. I graduated with a B.A. Mod. in Neuroscience (a science degree but TCD don't do B. Sc.s). I'm particularly interested in memory (hence the research), neurotrophins and neuropharmacology, especially antidepressants. I'm also interested in psychoacoustics (how the mind perceives sound) and the neuroscience of aesthetics but I'm very much a beginner in these areas.

Have a massive interest in assay design, in particular the ones involving antibodies and physics (I started the degree in physics and applied maths before i moved to biomed)

Nerdiness drips out my ears, and i love it :)

hey! you're one of our GEMs them? :D It must be pretty hectic for you guys with so much to cover in each semester, thought we had it pretty bad! ;) I'm in first med (undergraduate.. thought I'd be doing premed as I mentioned here, but it seems that having 2 or more sciences lets you go right into first year.. which is great, until you realise that it's January 6th and you've got very little done for the exams in a week's time.. :( )

Yup I'm one of the reclusive GEPs that live either in Sandyford or the library, occasionally popping in to prod a cadaver :p I dunno what the workload difference is between the 4-5 year courses; we had 8 modules this semester which seems to be more than enough, but the grads who started in UCD last year had something like 10 in their 2nd semester, so it could be worse! Anyway hope the exams are going well, and even if they're not then I hope they're going quickly

Ah, we have 6 modules instead of the 8.. god, 10 must be pretty awful! :/
and this morning's exam was.. well, horrible! I totally blanked! Ah well, it was always going to be my worst one.. roll on the rest!

    I'm Psi.

I'm currently attending in gastroenterology and hepatology in a US University Hospital. I've qualifications in GI Physiology/Drug Delivery, Immunology, Infectious Disease and Epidemiology. I'm part of a multi-disciplinary international translation-research team focusing on IBD and mucosal disease.

    My specific interests are:

Physiology of Gut Associate Lymphoid Tissue
    Football
    Mucosal Drug Delivery
    White Water Rafting
Fibrosis and Stricturing in Crohn's Disease
    GI Wound Healing
    Snowboarding
    IBD associated Septicemia
    Survival Trekking
    Cooking

I look far too young for my own good and it leads to lots and lots of problems professionally. I can still pull hot people much younger than me though.

I hate stupidity and can't stand people misportraying medical and scientific information.
    I'm nice really though.

Other than that I founded Radsoc so i'm heavily involved in its running.

I'm Bec, 20 year old law trainee who's worked PT with the HSE for 3 years. I've been working in the ED PT for two years and I must say I rather like it. It's polar opposite to my main love (criminal law:p) but it lets me experience and learn new things on a daily basis. Thankful to still have my job tbh, considering the cutback rumblings.

Hey banzai something I was wondering the other day- what happens if a patient who comes into casualty doesn't have a medical card and doesn't have any money on them?

Oh and there's a change in my status, I'm definitely starting medicine in September. Got an offer for Peninsula Medical School in the UK yesterday but still hoping to get a place at RCSI this year :D

    LOL, only too true.
Hey banzai something I was wondering the other day- what happens if a patient who comes into casualty doesn't have a medical card and doesn't have any money on them?

They're billed using our super cool bill book, just use one of their small stickers to get the adress etc. Bill is sent out by the admins once the patient is registered so they generally have it in 2/3 days. If it's unpaid after 2wks the "final notice" is sent out, this can go on infintly from what I've seen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

So they could easily give the wrong address? (note to self) just kidding :p

Thanks Tallaght :) Have you heard anything about how the first graduates are doing?

well, I'll put it to you this way...I haven't heard anything bad about them.

Most medical graduates are pretty much the same. You don't hear lots of "OMG, the guys from university X are amazing".

But if there's rubbish people out there, you'd generally hear about it pretty quick.

There's been no bad reports on the UK doctors' equivalent of boards, so fingers crossed.
