They're going to be looking at what I posted above and set out on their journeys accordingly
Which leads to the Same confusion as last weekend

If people can’t be bothered to scroll down and actually read the forecast, then that’s their own fault. It’s on the app so if people aren’t informed it’s due to their own laziness. Those pictures are always only a tiny part of the forecast.

WRF just shows North of country getting any worthwhile wintriness.
I see dewpoints will be above 0°C for much of the night till they bottom oit at minus 4 tomorrow in the showers.

So weighting it up , nothing too noteworthy then tonight for many if WRF is correct.

I'm echoing your thoughts. As I mentioned, unless we get upgrades later today, chances are slim for most bar high ground in the northern 2/3 of the country....say from about 250/300m ASL in the middle section of the country and from maybe about 150ish metres ASL in the northern third, for snow to fall and stick readily. That's based on the current information at hand and my estimates might change later.

Yep, for now, go north and go high.

very low risk of snow in low lying areas away from Northern Ireland according to the latest Hirlam. Looks like rain for the majority of us. Maybe later on things will change.

Met eireann still all rain on their website for cavan tonight and tomorrow
There is a yellow exclamation triangle beside it but that's on every town and you can't even click through to a warning

So Joe soap who sets met Éireann to their home town and who just looks at the 5 day and not the national will be totally unaware
    Ridiculous and careless imho

Obviously people here in Kildare are anxious of a repeat of last weekend. I think the confidence is there that there won’t be a repeat. Warnings have been issued though so we see what happens.

I don’t think this potential would be worth GL commenting on anyways. ;-)

Latest Euro4 says "Looks like rain Ted" for tonight.

However Sunday shows plenty of wintriness.

I'm in Belfast today and there is lots of lying snow on the hills and mountains surrounding the city. Seems to be around 200m upwards.

ECMWF screenshots I took this morning, showing a sleet/snow marginal situation through the midlands overnight. Snowline down to around 100-150 metres. However, the Harmonie says no and ibstead has rain for places like Mullingar (100 m and right in the middle of the blue).

Haven't had much more of a look since but would be surprised to see anything at lowest levels.

Any realtime hints as to the tracking of the low pressure vs what the models are showing for this evening?

Certainly nothing of too much notice for Greater Dublin overnight tonight. Tomorrow is looking raw and bitter.

The wind has dropped in Clare, the lake over the road is like a sheet of glass.
Temperature is not too bad but the sky has that brown snowy tinge about it.

AROME shows the tell tale signs of big convective gusts moving across the country during tomorrow, would expect loads of big blustery hail and wintry showers.

I think the models especially the ECM showing less lying snow for tomorrow, that doesn't mean driving conditions won't be tricky at times especially under one of those big showers. Indeed they can be the most dangerous as you can happen upon one in a moment as your flying up the motorway and previous years have seen a few pile ups after heavy hail showers.

Amazing hailstones at around 3am last night in Galway. Really heavy and loud. Thunder and lightning as well.

The progression of the cold airmass.

Temps staying up above freezing tomorrow night in most places it would seem, the wind helping there. Windchill is another thing though, skinning!

The EURO 4 's take on the weather tomorrow, similar to the ECM but probably showing more wintry stuff and lying snow I would think tomorrow night , probably more so over higher ground but showing snow on lower ground also.

This is it's idea of the amount of snow that might fall , not what will be on the ground as a lot of it will melt.

    Thats very bold of them

Might as well go to bed so. You may think its very hard for them to forecast snow but the actual forecast for today changed 4 times in the last week. If theres a strong jet they might as well go on holidays as it totally unpredictable even in realtime as opposed to slightly.

Amazing the respect given to Met Eireann forecasts. Their forecasts change because the editor changes!! If we put all 5 presenters on TV tonight we would ser 5 different forecasts

heavy sleety rain at Dunshaughlin, wouldn't take much more than a 1 or 2 degree drop for this to fall as snow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,981 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

My prediction is fairly widespread falling snow but very little sticking. BUT considering most of us spend half our lives chasing snow I think it will be notable for some!

No snow in west Cork last Sunday and I very much doubt there will be any this weekend either. Very rainy tonight.

The 11pm TAF's seem to indicate possible sporadic snow showers during the day tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,693 ✭✭✭SleetAndSnow

On the TAFS, Rain Snow = Sleet and Snow Rain = wet snow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,227 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

    No,

    RASN= More rain than snow
    SNRA= More snow than rain

The difference between them can be small, and often in Ireland it just says RASN for all levels of sleet. I rarely see SNRA, but it's getting more popular.
