Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was told by my mum that she was on a bus based in Donnybrook Garage while going on the 18 route to Sandymount on Tuesday morning having a 7UP AOA on it.

I would to see info or a photo if it's true.

Came across this photo and it brought back a childhood memory of a trip into Dublin City Centre as a 4 year old on the now defunct route 65A

Also travelled on this pair years later, the MCW on the route 56A and I'm nearly sure the Olympain was on the route 8.

Since it is being reported elsewhere that DB are meant to be getting a Wrights Hybrid on trial for 6 months I thought I would share these pictures of the last hybrid that was on trial in Dublin - WH 1! Not included in this set, but I will upload it at some point, WH 1 became a star for me when it bravely worked the 33 to Balbriggan one evening...only to fail two stops from the end!

Anyhoow, WH 1 on O'Connell Street with a 16 to Ballinteer on 27/08/2009:

And WH 1 at Lakeside Shopping Centre, near London, when it was number 501 in the Ensignbus fleet on . This shot is quite historical because a few hours later the bus had gone up in flames and was completely destroyed!

Found these pictures at home recently taken just over twenty years ago on the 25th January 1993 in Dun Laoghaire. They show some unnumbered Plaxton Verde/DAFs "P" buses just after being delivered. Unfortunatley on the day there were no markings on the bus to identify which was which.

Wasn't the other electric bus DB had on trial seriously damaged in an accident or something?

Yeah, it was gutted in a fire in Essex after Dublin Bus finished their trial of it.

    Double or single doors?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭Trebor176

From what I can understand is that the white one (DM1) will be a single door, and possibly a B5TL, while the other one (DM2) will be in a green livery and will be dual door, and it seems it will be a B5LH. One of these will be allocated to Conyngham Road, while the other is rumoured to be heading for Phibsboro depot. Both will be trialled for the six months only.

Not really ideal for preservation in Ireland, being left hand drive, but I'd certainly be curious to see it. :) Interesting that there's a Detroit Diesel engine in there - I wonder if it sounds like a KD?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,045 ✭✭✭Csalem

Can't remember what it sounds like it. But do recall that it was stopped beside an AV on the 9 at the junction of Abbey Street/O'Connell Street and when lights went green it pulled off but the 9 beside stalled and then broke down!

Considering how few GM engined Buses were allowed to be retained for preservation,I'd suggest this is a good second choice.

Its worth noting that this bus has the EXACT same Engine/Transmission combination as the KD...GM6V-71 mated to an Allison V-730 3 Speed Automatic Gearbox

It also underlines the substantial divergence of thinking on how the European and American thinking on Vehicle Logevity stacks up.

2290 entered service in 1982 and recieves a  MID-LIFE:eek: rebuild 20 YEARS later.....then a Life Extention rebuild a further 7 years after that....remaining in revenue service until 2011...those figures, representing as they do,REVENUE EARNING service, are impressive indeed.

The also underline one of the primary reasons why CIE embarked upon the General Motors Detroit Diesel crusade back in the late 1970's.

The longetivity of the Detroit's in Railway service was impressive, and so were the statistics from North American Bus & Coach Operations....however it is fair to say, that the operating conditions in this particular corner of Europe were not ideal for a high revving 2-stroke diesel engine operating in a non-stationary mode.....The rest,as they say,is History :)

Judging from the bark of the exhaust on 2290,I would think that it's exhaust system is different to that which attempted to silence our KD fleet,I wonder if it has had some aftermarket treatment to clean it's act up and sap a few horsepower in the process ?

Also of interest in that Flickr set of images is the preponderance of Bicycle Racks fitted to TTC buses....with not so much as a unicycle to be seen on any of them....?

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Ehrm... I think DT0 might be more apt given it's Trident lineage 'n'all ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,045 ✭✭✭Csalem

Yes it was a Dennis Trident but it was the basis upon which the AV order was placed, and lead to the 658 ALX 400s in the Dublin Bus fleet.

Anyhoo some shots of RH 31 taken this evening:

Yes, also the 10 Dennis (or Transbus if you prefer) Trident 2-chassised, Cummins-engined ALX400s -the DT series I referred to.

I remember very well 99-D-41 on demo to DB - many mornings it took me out to Ballycoolen as the 38A - anybody know what engine it runs? Is it the Cummins also?

That's a really nice looking bus. Does DM1 have a window along the stairwell? Dm2 doesn't seem to and the pic of DM1 isn't clear enough to tell.

Seems to be better placement of stairwell/centre door. Is the hidden assault alarm button in the cab a standard feature of current DB's?

DM1 has a window along the stairwell like the new Gemini 3's that are a new spec for buses in London.

I wouldn't know about the assault alarms buttons myself. I have never seen them located to the other buses of the fleet.

According to Irishbuses.com, it says that DM1 will be trialled on the 120 out of Phibsboro and DM2 will be trialled on the 151 out of Conyngham Road.

I was going to comment that it is parked in a cycle lane, but actually all the bus stops are positioned so that buses have to stand in the cycle lane to serve them.

As the Ghost Bus tour is €28 it might be a while before I get to see the interior of the bus :) I did the tour about six years ago so it is on my list of things to do again.

Only seen a few foreign bus pics on here.

This is a postcard showing a trolleybus running in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon way back in 1921. Found this on a search for trolleybus images. The 10-cent fare would be $2.38 today (equivalent to €1.71); but LA's Metro Bus base fare is $1.50 (€1.08) at the time of writing.

Who was it that picked that unflattering yellow colour for the second Atlantean paint job all those years ago? Yellows are among the pigments most susceptible to damage due to sunlight, too.

Photo from around 1989 at the junction of the Tallaght by pass and Old Blessington Rd. Very different view today. Straight ahead is now many blocks of apartments and to the right is the Maldron Hotel and Tallaght Stadium. The D Atlantean was freshly repainted in new Dublin Bus livery. I can't remember which one it was but I'm nearly sure it was a very early 500.
