    Weather Patterns – 04/01/19.

    Met Office - Weather
    Published on Jan 4, 2019
'Weather Patterns' allows you to watch the weather patterns evolve over the next 48 hours and see how the jet stream influences high and low pressure and what this means for the UK's weather.

The screen is split into four panels. The top left shows isobars and weather fronts. On the bottom left you'll find the wind and air temperature at the surface. The bottom right shows the jet stream and the temperature at 5000 feet above the ground. On the top right you'll see how all of this impacts the cloud, rain and snow over the UK.

During the next 48 hours, a large area of high pressure sits over the UK and the jet stream flows to the north of Scotland. Most places will be settled with light winds. The air at 5000 feet is of Atlantic origin and relatively mild. However, this does not necessarily translate to mild air closer to the ground – especially where the cloud breaks and frost forms. However, the amount of cloud cover during the next couple of days is the most uncertain aspect of the forecast. There is a lot of low cloud currently trapped underneath the area of high pressure. Cloud breaks, especially during Friday night and Saturday are fairly tenuous and slow-moving – most likely occurring to the east of Scotland and over some central parts of England and Wales. Under any prolonged clear skies, temperatures will tumble below freezing and a frost will form. During Saturday night and into Sunday, a more widespread clearance of the low cloud will occur in the north behind a cold front.
