Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Must have heard us
19th August: The Shannon Rainfall Radar experienced a technical fault overnight and is currently not operational, hence the lack of rainfall images from South-West Ireland. The fault is being investigated and further updates will follow. Apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Nothing will be done as the tender is out for a replacement radar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,971 ✭✭✭spookwoman

Its affecting more than the South West, P*ssing down in waterford and not showing up

Darragh O’Brien is the Minister responsible for Met Eireann. There's not too much point in complaining to him as he's much too busy solving the housing/homelessness problem.

This is approximately what the radar looks like now

Though rain a little further South as it's not raining here in Sligo yet

Has the airport got it's own weather radar?

No, the rain radar at Shannon is Met Office equipment

A pretty important piece of national infrastructure should not be breaking down like this on a regular basis. Disgraceful to be honest.

Infrastructure in general is treated as an afterthought in this country (see roads, public transport, water, energy etc). We've chronically underinvested for the entire history of the state so it's no surprise to see things like this happen

There's currently a tender out for an upgrade though considering it's a public service body I wouldn't hold out any hope it'll keep to schedule

Shannon radar is a lost cause. Same story over the last 10/15 years. 'Technical fault'. 'Future improvements'. 'Tenders'. All gets a bit yawn inducing after a while.

Yeah infrastructure in Ireland is a joke. It took 35 years to build the dual carriageway into Sligo and 25 years to pave O Connell Street

Best estimate Shannon will be fixed in 2050

    More duct tape needed.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

Might as well just switch it off and leave it off at this stage. More of a nuisance than anything else now.

Do other worldwide weather apps such as RainViewer or yr get their info from our dodgy Shannon radar because they often seem to have the same lack of rainfall as it,when outside the window it’s tipping down??

Is it down again? We’ve had a lot of rain in Galway that didn’t appear on the radar.

They're caused by mobile phone towers.

Not 5g mobile phone towers?

If so, then they must all be destroyed at once. Will someone please tell Gemma!

    No, really, it's a well-established fact. Here's a paper on it.

    interesting read

just to add, it's not mobile phone operator's radio access networks (phone to base station), rather 5GHz wifi, wireless internet providers and point to point links...

You know what time it is!!! It's time for the Shannon radar to go down before a yellow rainfall warning..

I suspect they now turn it off before any significant rainfall arrives in case it gets overwhelmed due to it's fragile state. :)
