Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Touching hurricane speed (64kt) at Fastnet with 143km/h gust. Decreased slightly since.

Note this site is 60m ASL and out to sea.

The usual numpties on Facebook. People with mobile homes in Carne were asked to check them for loose outdoor furniture and to take down awnings. Some of the replies are priceless. "Ah sure, it's just a yellow warning".
Wait until the awnings and plastic chairs are smashed through windows etc.

Wind seems to have completely dropped off in cork despite warnings being valid for another 4 hours.

A number of the weather models I saw shows a period of calm before winds reach their peak towards 10-11 PM, that could be it.

That being said, it doesn't feel very calm here in Ballincollig...

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Met Aaron today -he was bleating on about some storm. I think it was probably a wind up.

The numbers without power are meaningless. Its the wind speeds that matter and so far, no where on land has experienced more than mid level yellow warning wind strengths. That may change but considering that Co kerry's red warning window has passed, it is unlikely winds are going to increase significantly in other parts.

I think the lack of stations between Valentia and Mace Head might be the issue there.

In Cork City it's basically at standard winter Atlantic storm levels. It's also begun to rain since just before 9:00pm

Just had a severe gust now.
There's time yet maybe for Hannah to bite back

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,693 ✭✭✭SleetAndSnow

I'm almost afraid to say it at this point, but still some strong gusts here where I am in Cork City. Trees just bent over in a gust now. Similar to what we get in winter, but the leaves malemor more severe. Time has become longer between them.

Quite a bit lower down then the airport but still close, we usually get the same weather as the airport where I am.

Can anyone tell me what's going on with Aer Lingus 890 at Cork Airport at the moment? Looks like it's just taxiing around waiting for a break in the weather.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Gusts to 9 pm still below the earlier 62 knots. Even the rooftop station at the Cliffs of Moher is gusting 58 knots, albeit on the increase. Highest Ballybunion Buoy gust still 69.knots. It's looking significantly weaker than models had progged for this time. So far...

Keep an eye on Finnis Buoy, just east of the Aran Islands. Currently gusting to 57 knots.

Ryanair don't like diversions it costs Michael O Leary money he/she will land it alright plus the wind isn't that bad now even though 2 Aer Lingus flights went to Dublin.

I think it is very hard to judge as area the strongest core of winds are coming ashore is very spare with synoptic stations.

If Mace Head was in the bulls-eye of the strongest i'm sure would be above 70kt..

Looking at obs I'll punt for it to get the highest official ob gust in next few hours

A colleague was on tonight’s Dublin-Farranfore flight, which got cancelled. They put passengers on a coach instead. You would have to wonder if that is such a great idea with all the stay off the roads warnings around.

That’s exactly how I described Ophelia in Cork, it was a very angry ominous sound high in the sky

Cork Boy 53, here's those max wind gusts for April at Cork stations I promised. Keep in mind, Roches Point's data here is not its complete records as I have data available only back to 1956 whilst it has recorded data back to the 19th century.

Interesting how 17 April 2013 appears in both, didn't think that period was that windy but stats show differently. Maybe a post on it sometime in the stats thread?
