Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone believe Brexit is going to make it more difficult/impossible to bring a car in from the U.K.?

Myself & herself have been talking about it, but are wondering are we on a 12 month countdown now before it's too late!

If the Brits leave the customs union then most likely you could have to pay VAT on imports too as well as VRT making importing a car very expensive but there is so much up in the air at the moment it's hard to tell what way it's going to pan out. There really was no plan in place for a "Leave" vote.

I can see another referendum in which they will try and have a "Stay" vote.

Will it become much harder to import kit cars and Ariels after the big Brex?

No idea but I cannot see it being easy at the moment either given the way insurance companies don't like anything that's not vanilla in their minds. Remember insurance companies here tend to class cars like a 130bhp Bora as a sports car.

They should give it the good old Nice/Lisbon treaty option and have a second referendum

What's the story with getting a fresh UK import a D reg if you don't have an address there? It's being sold by a fairly big dealer so is it a matter of just getting them to stick Dublin at the end of the address and then once issued a registration, just log onto the motor tax website and change the address to the correct county before taxing it? Anyone done similar?

Disclaimer: I'm not one for believing in this D reg nonsense but the car has a somewhat limit market so for resale purposes a D reg would probably be more universally accepted.

You would need a Dublin address.

    Not your ornery onager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,183 ✭✭✭UnknownSpecies

When VRTing the car, the address on the proof of address you provide is the one that determines the reg. I just did this recently. Gave a Cork proof of address (my home home) and then once I got the log book and went to tax it, I changed the address to my current one. Got my C reg number on the day in the VRT centre.

edit. tl;dr yes sticking Dublin on it before he dealer registers it should work. Not sure what sort of proof they'll need from a dealer.

Since there's now going to be a transition deal until the end of 2020, I would have thought everything will continue as is until then at least.

A deal would have to include cars (for the UK given how many cars are made over there, and if they've caved so much on other areas, I don't see why they won't compromise to get that put through as well) so it's highly unlikely there will be any kind of tariffs (customs duties) either, but I suppose it is possible that VAT will have to be paid on imports with it being non-EU.

I can understand that if an individual is VRTing a car themselves but it's very possible that the VRT is already paid by the dealer but the car is not registered yet until it's sold. When I bought my last imported car from a dealer I was never asked for proof of address when they registered it. They just asked me if I wanted the reg in my county or theres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,477 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yep, I think it’s the same as registering a new car, they don’t look for any proof. You could register the car at the garages address using their post code, tax it, then change address?

Think one of the scum vans got me outside Cork.

The thing was hidden by a truck on the inside lane right up until I was alongside it - doing a hundred and eight.

Still, backfiring it through the Jack Laynch tunnel amused.

Yep, I did this. Just give them any address. I gave my sister’s but I’m pretty certain it’s not verified, so literally anything will do.

What's the done thing if you service a car yourself regarding the service book. I picked an 06 car up last week with a full service history. During the week I put fresh oil and filters in it. I was just gonna write it in the book, but obviously no stamp or anything.

It's probably worth damn all writing it in though as anyone could do that. Suppose fake service history with stamps is easy done too.

Receipts are the next best thing.
I sold a car last year and buyer was blown away with the paperwork I supplied.
Hence he was the first and only person to come and view the car.

Anytime I service my own I would write it into the service book and keep the parts receipts as proof. No buyer ever questioned it.

    Well wear

    Cheers fellas.

Only moved up one year over my 520d but I got a great deal on it and the difference in refinement is much greater. It can shift quickly too for a big enough car. This one has the adaptive chassis dampeners, sunroof, paddle shift, pro nav, etc and only 48k km on the clock.

I know it's not a M car or the likes but I promised myself that I'd get something a little bit different and this fits the bill for me. With these cars going the way of the dodo in the next 10 to 20 years it's nice to own one with a nice bit of torque before they are taxed out of existence.

This same justification I gave myself. Should be the motors forum tagline. Buy something interesting while you still can!

Getting petrol tonight 1.347 per litre that’s the cheapest I’ve got it this year anyway must have dropped a bit in the last 2 weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭CIP4

Insurance is up in April started looking for rough prices. Aviva seem to be very cheap fully comp 850 euro I paid about 1350 last year. So if I could get it for the 850 I would be laughing considering I am still only 23. I have been with liberty for years and always found them good in terms of call centre staff being helpful and the cheapest. But reckon they wont even come close to that quote Aviva are giving. I am assuming Aviva are reasonably ok to deal with I suppose they are as big as liberty here so can't be too bad.

Aviva and Liberty always cheapest for me. Liberty lost me as a customer for life after fecking me around with the new car. Refused to quote me flat out unless I sent them proof of purchase etc and only then would they send it to a special panel to come up with a price. Can only imagine how high that would have been. Also wouldn't allow me to temporarily insure myself on the new car to take it home from England.

Cancelled my Liberty policy 10 months in. Took the hit of a year no claims. Went with Aviva then for €650 fully comp, full NCB protection. 27, full NCB, no points.

With liberty a few years (import Honda insight hybrid)find them fair, but hope they don't hike it too much in may,as not too many insurers will cover an import

Feck sake, that's rough! What do you reckon did it? Pure bad luck? Or did the cold spell a few weeks back damage it?

That being said, better to happen at home than on a big road trip! And you've got the stretch in the evenings to work on it! I remember replacing my rad the morning of my NCT test... got it in, passed the NCT and a coolant hose blew later that day lol!

If it could be sent up to Dublin that would be great, 135.9 in Maxol Ballinteer at the moment and that's probably the cheapest around these parts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,395 ✭✭✭Dartz

I paid 1.43 for the expensive stuff in Cork. Regular was 1.38

Normal petrol gets m,e 150km to the first quarter tank. Expensive stuff got me 180km. That was cruising accross the N25 mind, fully loaded at around 180k

Expensive petrol actually works out better for some reason.
