Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Oh yeah!

I got another one this morning. It's on Terenure Road East on the way from Terenure to Rathgar:

    picture.php?albumid=1068&pictureid=5341

I guess it refers to some "extinct" administrative district. Anyone know?

No worries. Hopefully there'll be more to come!

I think it's shut for good now. My Dad was telling me that he used to live around the corner from there and it was his local. As in it used to be a pub.

I was in there a couple of times with workmates: the classic Flannery's-Copper's-Manhattan combo. It still looked like a pub inside. When it was open the door was always shut and you had to knock to be let in! :D

The Gigs Place is still open, though. I was in there a couple of weeks ago as it happens. Just in case you're feeling peckish:

Pricey grub alright and I'd say most of it is straight from the shelves of Musgraves.

What you're really paying for is the drinking at all hours of the morning. My flatmate used to be able to get bottles of wine at all hours with no hassle when we lived opposite. Not exactly cheap but dead handy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,515 ✭✭✭✭admiralofthefleet

tom has had awful trouble with drunkards coming in and causing trouble, thats why his prices are a little high, to deter the trouble makers

I know, but what can ye do? That's a pretty normal price for any pub or restaurant, however.

    No doubt!

That's it, though, but do they still have wine now that the licensing laws were changed? We went for tea and coffee because we had already had more than or fill.

By the way, that old Police Station sign is very interesting. Is that still outside an old Dublin Metropolitan Police station, and if so, how on earth did it last until now?

Anyway, I'm going into town tomorrow and I'll be keeping a sharp eye out!

I took this snap on Nassau St (near Lincoln Lane) on Sunday!

It's an old sign for "Finn's Hotel" on the gable of a red brick building.

Rathmines used to be a township untill about 1930 when it was taken over by Dublin Corporation - that's why it had a Town Hall. Now taken over by the VEC. Still has the clocktower!

In relation to the hector gray sign:

If you approach middle abbey street from liffey street.. and look towards the side of the hector gray building, you will see another 'ghost sign' for the aforementioned store.

Anyone that grew up in Lucan will remember Cormack's:

    picture.php?albumid=1068&pictureid=5698

It's where you would go for bags of marbles, fishing tackle, puncture repair kits and of course Matchbox cars:

    picture.php?albumid=1068&pictureid=5699

The famous Matchbox display case is no longer there, but the window sticker is:

I often pass Cormacks shop in Lucan Alex, I sometimes picture it as an aladdins cave of 1970's/80's toys hidden in it's attic or back room, I can always dream.:)

I'd say you could be right there! I didn't have a proper look through the shutters, but there did seem to be some bits and pieces inside.

No picture and it's technically not an old sign but has anyone else noticed the "irish republic" flag (like the 1916 version) flying from the TEEU building in parnell street?

What's the history of the place? I know nothing about it other than it's distinctive and rather dilapidated facade?

Great picture Dord, Lynch's used it as a beer garden complete with canopy! I assumed it was lost for good so great to see it's still there, what a shame to see it's a bit of a rubbish dump now. :(

Last I saw, it's still in a remarkable state of preservation... hopefully will remain so
