I worked in their manufacturing plant in Ballinasloe back in their hayday in the 80s/90s. The only plant outside the US (Rhode Island). Opened in 1971...closed around 2003. Great company and fantastic place to work.
They were fairly elite, exclusive and expensive back then.
I remember machining solid gold ones for the elite in the Middle East. Company and is gone basically now with the brand sold to the Chinese. Wouldn't be interested in buying one now.

Anyway....a small sample of my historic collection.:pac:

So I rang their office. Shipping will be from Luton, UK. The guy I spoke to said that as far as he know, what we pay on the screen is what it is, they are not expecting more thereafter and mentioned free trade agreement.

I'm still a little unsure because from Revenue summary it would appear that VAT will still apply (Unless Cross already applied Irish VAT, seems unlikely though right?).

On another page from UK Gov site, it seems to say personal user (not VAT registered) will be charged UK VAT.

VAT within the EU and with other trade agreement countries
If you supply goods to an EU country these sales are technically known as dispatches or removals rather than exports.

Dispatches within the EU between VAT-registered businesses are not subject to VAT. This also applies to goods imported into the EU that have been released for free circulation following payment of import duties.

However, when you dispatch goods to someone in an EU country, who is not registered for VAT in that country, you should normally charge VAT.

Read more about VAT: exports, dispatches and supplying goods abroad.

Customs declarations are not generally required for goods in free circulation within the EU, but traders must remember to raise VAT invoices showing the VAT Registration Number of their customers and obtain evidence of shipment.

How to handle VAT within the EU
If your EU customer is VAT registered and can provide you with a valid EU VAT Registration Number:

you can apply the zero rate of VAT to the sale
the VAT will be due in the destination country from the customer on acquisition of the goods
you must keep paperwork that shows both the seller’s and buyer’s VAT registration numbers (with the correct national codes) on the invoice
you must number your sales invoices in sequence
you must also get and keep valid evidence that the goods have been removed from the UK within certain time limits to be able to zero rate
    Read more about charging VAT.

If your buyer is not VAT registered, or you cannot get their VAT number, then as the seller you must charge the UK rate of VAT.

Maybe someone who might know more about this subject can shed a light.. as far as I can see, I think we will be charged VAT once it get into country over €22 (inclusive of shipping charge). Just a matter of what VAT did Cross apply that I don't have answer to.

AT Cross are still a registered company according to the CRO. That doesn't mean they are registered for VAT, though. Ballinalsloe appeared as the Irish office when I looked yesterday, so fingers crossed they'll be VAT paid.

Didn't need a pen but I couldn't pass up such a good deal. Original price €110 reduced to €60 in the sale and then all the discounts brought it down to just over €22 delivered

They still have a sales office there.

Edit - address is also given on their website, so vat is most likely included.

Site url also has en_ie in it. Denoting English language and Ireland.

So highly unlikely for any additional charges.

For a so called top brand the customer service seems pretty deplorable. Made an order soon after it was posted for over €100. The order wouldn't show up so thought it didn't go through and made another order. Got two emails with different order numbers and charged twice so have been attempting to cancel one since Saturday. Emails aren't being responded to. The Irish customer care number 1-800-282-7677 appears invalid. And when you call the UK number they state it's a different department and the can't do anything but will redirect our call to the Irish team - to an invalid number and the call drops.

Any idea how I should proceed?

Call 0044 1582 422793 (press the key for sales I think). Speak to the chap there about that you wan to cancel an order but don't see the option on the website. He'll take care of it on his end.

The number is from the website by the way

That's the UK number I had called and spoke to a person and explained, they redirected to a dead end. Was told that Irish orders were a different department.

The UK number is also on the order confirmation email at the end. That's where I got it from.

I’m in the same position. I placed an order via PayPal, appeared to be an issue with the payment. I ordered again and received an email shortly thereafter for the original order with the money taken from my account.

I found this number on google - (090)9631400; it’s from their old Ballinasloe office....I might chance it tomorrow

Finally got to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about.

They are not Irish vat registered and will send package by courier (they mentioned UPS but wasn’t sure of this). They don’t sound Brexit ready and sounds like they will as normal charge uk vat.

Therefore any order greater than €22 will attract both Irish vat and the courier admin fee. I’ve heard some couriers only taking cash at the doorstep.

Therefore I cancelled my order. As others have mentioned Cross pens are nowhere near as good these days and just about worth the discounted amount and definitely not after a heap of vat and admin costs added.

    Thanks anyway OP

What happens if you refuse delivery, will they refund - I can't see how they can resell an engraved pen...!

Also how is an end user expected to know where they are shipping it from - It was an ie domain if I remember correctly, and prices were in euros?

PS: Just checked and my order total is €23.63!!

I received an order from a supplier in the UK today via DHL. Ordered and paid for before New Year..
Total order value was €186...VAT and customs was €56.86 on top. Paid on the DHL website before delivery.
    So close to 25% charges.
Guess who won't be buying from the UK anymore!

I now find myself having to check the Contact Us or About Us section of every website I go to order off to find where their distribution centre is located. :( Today I found out that Book Depository is essentially just Amazon now. Lots of potential for Irish companies to fill vacuums here as it seems we do far do much of our online shopping in the UK.

BTW, Cross send parcels from Bedfordshire to Ireland despite having EU based distribution centres.

I noticed the following from the cross site:

"Note: Engraving services are available for select pens, watches and accessories only. The choice of available engraving styles, number of engraving lines, and maximum number of characters per line varies from product to product. We do not accept returns on any engraved items for refunds or merchandise exchanges. We will accept customized items for repair under our warranty policy as described in the warranty section of the site."

So from the above, it looks like anyone that got engraving on their pens will be out of pocket if they return them.

Mind you I still have not received any dispatch emails for my 2 orders. On one hand, hope they arrive as they are a great bargain. Then again hope they don't as they might attract charges. Just waiting to see how it pans out.
