Ordered 2 OP, thanks. I've been using the WeMo plug, but at €45+ for 1 plug, I couldn't justify getting another 1. Will give these a go.

I currently fly use these for setting garden lights in timers. Extremely handy. What I did was out a plug extender on the WeMo plug, so all the lights come on together. Would be nice to have separate controls for the different lights.

So, just in case anyone was thinking about using this for a dryer/washing machine (if you have a night rate), just check the load rating on these first.

No, they connect to an external service.. no port forwarding required.

Most of these smart plugs have "remote access" option. Basically, these plugs connect to a server. The app connects to a server. Once plug and phone have internet access, should be no problem. Any changes you make on the app are sent the server.

Had got 1 smart wifi plug in a bundle with the Amazon Alexa recently... although I still haven't taken it out of the packet.

Half thinking of setting up some anti-burglar measures if I'm away.
Eg. when the IP camera detects motion in the driveway, then turn on a plug connected to a light in the front bedroom...

So what do people use these for?

I've a few tp-link ones I got cheap in Tesco and all I use them for so far is telling Alexa to turn on a floor lamp or turn on the aquarium lights.

It's probably more energy efficient to turn off the plug during the night than leave them in standby mode.

Other uses I've seen are avoiding over-charging phones/tablets/devices... so turn off the plug after an hour or two of charging.

Or maybe turn on a battery charger every fortnight or so to top of emergency batteries you can leave in a charger permanently.

A timer switch to turn off childrens bedroom lights.

If you really want a useful thing for these (if you have a coffee or tea with breakfast) is to set the plug for the same time as your alarm. This will then boil the kettle for you. Just make sure you have the switch down on the plug and it's filled with water!

Bought 6, order of 3 and 3, second batch was cheaper cause you use points. 6 cost me 35 in the end. Great deal. I hope they do well; planning 3 or 4 of them for christmas lights, and 2 for cabinet lights. Hopefully works well enough with Alexa

I have a few of these. Can be handy alright.

I have mine connected to google home as a device. so for example I just need to say 'ok google, turn on the telly' and it will power on my telly and sound system.

Solves that first world problem very well for me

EDIT - forgot to say also that the firmware on these can be changed to an open source firmware too, for those who like dabbling in that side of things for fun or projects etc.

Might be better cancelling that and order 2 sets of 2..

.. less risk of customs hammering you if despatched separately as it'll be under €22 per order then.

Becareful, the promo code is only usable twice per account. Not sure if cancelling the order would reset that limit. (Could always open another account i suppose).

Side note, register, activate the account via the confirmation email and you will get 100 points (Basically further discount that can be applied at checkout). If you're gonna order as two separate order, best leave the smaller order on the second one to maximise the usage of the points and have minimum carry over.
