Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Guy Gowan 1 Day Tutorial for Boards

Some of us attended Photofest yesterday and got a first hand chance to see Guy Gowan in action showing how to get the most out of CS3, Bridge and other apps. I think we would all agree it was very valuable ... (lads please post your opinions here for the rest of the gang to see ...)

MikeyAnywhere was so impressed he forked out €180 for his DVD's ...

For the rest of you all we have is a link to his, half built, web page -
    http://www.etipsntricks.com/

In case you don't know who he is .. he is one of the people who Adobe consult when they are designing CSx ... There is also a video at -
    http://www.apple.com/uk/pro/techniques/aperture/workingwithaperture.html

He is pioneering non invasive techniques to get to most from your images ... (e.g. dodging and burning without using the dodge and burn tools in CS3) ... he has a very good way to make things seem easy to understand...
I think it would be extremely valuable to bring Guy over to Dublin (or hook it on to one of his many trips) for a full day session with the boardsies ... the cost is a bit on the expensive side so we would need numbers ...

Total cost is €1,500 for a full day plus expenses

Ok ... this may seem a lot but if we can line up 30 people is will be about €40-€50 each (I estimate) ...

So who is (in principle) interested, please vote above ... if numbers are big enough ... I'll follow up ...

I'm interested in attending a 1 day Guy Gowan CS3 session 40 votes

I'll figure out a way to collect the money if there is enough interest ... Roen can you vote in the poll ?

I'm willing to pay around €100 for this and can be confirmed as a definate. I just about remembered his mono conversion and tried it out last night. Very impressed.

    Oh yes please!

I'd go, but it'd have to be more like €50 before I could justify it TBH.

I probably would depending on funds, and know a few others that would be interested.

 ... please, please, please vote in the poll ... if this thread gets a bit on the long side I'd want to have to pick out the information from it ...

I'll only proceed based on reaching critical mass and this will be judged purely based on the poll ... ;)

If the cost is less than €100
Hi ... there is a chance to book into a pre-existing seminar for €100 -

    http://web.mac.com/etnt.ie/iWeb/etnt.ie/Retouching%20Workshop.html

This one is on 22nd June at NCAD ... places are limited but keep the votes coming ... Perhaps a better approach is to negotiate a group rate or ask them to extend into Saturday for a boards session ...

surely we'd also have to hire a venue?

Possibly ... and yes this would also involve a cost ... but there are other possibilities ... you are welcome to help us investigate solutions ... we are all too aware of the problems!

This reminds me - Seb ... do you think we could get a lecture theatre at DCU ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭minikin

If the cost is less than €75
    the sugarclub would be ideal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

If the cost is less than €100
Yeah ... if I need to get a paying venue then I'll look at that later ... for now I'm hoping there is someone from our group who can provide a free venue at their work or college ...

Unless you mean that that you can get the Sugar Club for free for a day ...

Anyways ... we still don't have enough numbers to justify the whole event yet ... lets give it a bit more time before we take any action on getting a venue ...

Anyone got any ideas for a free venue ? ... Living rooms won't work .. they would need to accomodate 30+, a projector and pc etc ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

a projector and pc etc ...

    Doncha mean a mac? :D

I can possibly provide projector, I'm sure Guy would bring his own laptop...

    I stand corrected ...

    Think guy brings a G5 ...

Big issues on this one will be numbers and a venue ... I suspect we may struggle to get this one far under €100 each ... this would require numbers of 30+ ... but lets see ...

We really need a free venue!!

If the cost is less than €100
I'm deffo interested in this, i'll fork out 75 squid, so add me on, just curious about the time frame though, are we talking weeks from booking till the event or months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

If the cost is less than €100
well chances are we may try to hook into the event in NCAD durign late June ... but we need more than 25 to get a private session at €75 ... not impossible ... but will be a challenge ...

... in addtion I will place no booking until everyone has paid in full ... there will be no credit given on this one ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭minikin

If the cost is less than €75
I'd be a bit wary of the free venue thing, would hate to pay out €100 for something that didn't go ahead because of a problem with the venue.

Voted, lightning stole my internets I'm afraid so I'll have limited access for a bit.
The fewer people the better for me. but I'll have to go with the majority rule of course.

this is looking like a goer, 23 people = €65 each
    (with a free venue)

If the cost is less than €100
Ok we are getting close on numbers but we can't rely on 100% pull through form the poll ... I'm looking into getting some sponsorship from a local vendor ... or maybe inviting Canon to host the event or something like that ... I also requested two quotations from Guy's company ... one for a group discount to the pre-existing session at NCAD ... the other for a stand alone session ...

are you looking after bookings - who/how can we pay, is paypal an option?

Nice meeting you all at photofest. That was my second times seeing guy and he's excellent so count me in. His methods have allready gotten me better shots, tried some out yesterday and tonight and they work in the real world a treat. Here's one for reference ,mayube it'll get a few more people interested.Apologies for the large size but in the smaller version you cannot see how his methods retain detail in the shadows as well as the highlights, and it was sharpened at amount 500,radius 1 and threshold 0 and i shot the original one stop over exposed, all learned from seeing him twice. For those who haven't seen what he does , he is well worth investigating.

If the cost is less than €100
OK ... some not so great news I afraid.

I spoke to Guy's agents in Ireland and they have changed their orignal quote to me based on our requirements. They seem to feel that if we make an big event out of it then they should look for a per head charge ... personally I think this is a bit rich, not to mention greedy, considering all they are doing is collecting money with me handling all the logistics. There is no additional burden on them if our numbers increase. They did make the point that Guy would normally charge more for a group of pro's. Thier rate to us is what they consider acceptable for amateurs. Please draw your own conclusions ...

... during the course of my conversation on the phone the goalposts appeared to be moving all over the place ... so I am less inclined to want give my time to act on their behalf...

In essense this puts the workshop out of the price range of most people in this thread (sorry!!) ... however just in case people change their minds here are our four main options -
    • Weekday private training seminar for 10-15 people, fee: €1,500. per day plus Travel, transfers, B&B, subsistence expenses: €250.- €300. approx. (charged as incurred) per day excluding VAT. Assuming we can get 15 people involved and the venue is free then the cost for this would be approx €135 each
    • Weekend private training seminar for 10-15 people, fee: €2,000. per day plus Travel, transfers, B&B, subsistence expenses: €250.- €300. approx. (charged as incurred) per day excluding VAT. Assuming we can get 15 people involved and the venue is free then the cost for this would be approx €170 each
    • Training workshop to a larger group 30-40 people, fee: €100. per person per day excluding VAT. If you add €300 for expenses and assume we get the venue for free then working on numbers of 25 (for argument sake the price would be approx €125 each
    • Every man and women for themself at the €100 per person session at NCAD on 22nd June . Note this session can accomodate 50 and they are booking as we speak with at least 25 spaces filled but it would give you a shorter amount of time with Guy and less flexibility than a private session (see Linky)
Perhaps the best thing to do it get one person to go and post the techniques in the photoshop sub-forum!!

Whoa... too rich for my blood I'm afraid. I'm not experienced enough yet that I'd get enough out of it to justify the outlay. And besides, that'd be my nifty fifty paid for! And then some.

Thanks for looking into it all though :) Fair play.

Hmm, maybe if i'd used photoshop before in my life i'd be able to learn something, but alas, i think a new lens would improve my images than his seminar.

fair play to you leinsterman for doing all that research, pity it hasn't worked out for us.I would have paid up to €250 for an all day workshop but Inhad a long chat with him last year in croke park and he nade an awful lot of sense. It reminds me of sopmething he said though, this year at photofest.People have no problem forking out a couple of grand on a lens but when asked to pay a couple of hundread euro on how to get the best from their images with that lens, they freak out and start complaining about the cost ,it's funny no?.... cos it's true :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭leinsterman

If the cost is less than €100
Hi ... sorry we could not sort this one out ... I'll email his agent and tell her we are not proceeding ... maybe this will change their position but I doubt it ... they will not want to offer a compromise pricing as it could affect their business elsewhere ... especially since it is being debated in a public forum ...

That bit of understanding of their situation aside ... they could have handled this a lot better by being clearer on their requirements in the first place and not moving the goal posts ...

Rymus ... you may as well unsticky this thread ...
