Calling for things to be censored is very serious, people shouldn't do it lightly. People who do it regularly are very dangerous, trying to enforce their views on others.
I think we're seeing an attempt to do this in an informal way around the issue of immigration, where people looking for limits on it are labelled racist and abused on social media if they voice their opinions.

Their opinions are definitely fascist by their nature.

Who? People who would like to see limits set, or people who regularly try to censor things?

I don't see how a DJ on any broadcaster tries to censor music or a song/story.

Is he just an accidental DJ or family in the business?
Never heard of him before this, and a quick search makes him out to be a bit of an idiot.

To be fair to McDermott, he was very good on Love Island.

I think that's more his level

I think in all this controversy some people are going OTT about McDermott, some even calling for him to be sacked are missing the point.

    He shouldn't be sacked.

The whole radio station needs to be shut down.

2fm has gone to the dogs since RTE decided to turn it into a national version of Red Fm/Beat.

I'm not bothered what McDermott thinks, but if he has a problem with the song then he simply shouldn't play it on his show. I'd say many who listen to him probably agree with him anyway. However, I suspect himself and most other 2fm personalities(lets not call them DJs anymore) have little or no say over what they play.

    Mod Note

The mods are working through the posts on this threads so some of you can expect cards etc. A reminder as per the charter no abuse of presenters or guests on shows, no bickering at each other take it to pm and if you see a dodgy/abusive post, help us out and report it.

From here out no warnings it'll be bans.

    PC7

Forget the tv presenters, I think mods could do more regarding abuse of posters on this site in general. It’s rife.

Thats a crock of sh1t. People kill themselves because they are bullied. I agree with your main point but that is nonsense.

Fair enough, people have commited suicide over verbal bullying, but that would be sustained, intense bullying.

Its not the same as this example. I can't see any gay man or woman killing themselves over the lyrics in a song.

    Mod:
Since some people appear to have failed to learn or bother to understand how boards work here's a handy quick tip for you.

    1) Read the charter in the forum; it's there for a reason
    2) Don't ask a Mod about a Mod decision on thread; that's what PMs, Feedback forum etc. are for
    3) If you think a post breaches said charter or general boards rules/policies you report it and don't respond to it (inc. the oh so popular "Post reported" replies)
    4) If a thread is starting to swirl the sewage drain the mod response tends to go accordingly; this thread is a good example

You've been warned; improve the posting standard in general (not pointing at any individual poster) or further bans will be handed out beyond the once done to date.

So..did HE actually call for the ban..or wha,,???

He said he asked two gay members of his team what they thought. One wanted it banned and the other wanted it censored. He didn't really have the balls to offer an opinion himself but instead stood beind two anonymous people.

Yeag as if he asked them.... probably hiding behind them and calling for the ban

Personally as a gay man I'm more offended by the terms SJW and snowflake. I get serious second hand embarrassment when people use them. Meaningless terms that people sprout when they have nothing valuable to contribute to a debate. The irony is using that terms shows you to be as equally as reactionary and sensitive as those you claim to be "snowflakes" It would be far more useful if you expressed an actual opinion.

It would be helpful for people to understand that the term ****** is associated with making people feel shame about who they are. That people associate it with being bullied, beaten up, ex communicated, hearing about people like them being murdered...rather than jumping on the "everyone is an sjw snowflake these days" bandwagon. At the same time it would also be helpful for people to understand that many people enjoy this song, it puts them in the Christmas mood (including myself) and most who listen to it are not trying to offend anyone or even understand why it might be hurtful for some people to hear that term on repeat for the entire month of December. Everyone needs to understand the context of when this song was written and the word ****** is no longer an acceptable term to use but that doesn't mean we need to erase a great song (debatable?) from history.

Perhaps a good compromise is to simply censor that word when played on the radio or in shops etc. I don't get what the big deal is. The word is censored when I type it on here. No one makes a big deal about that. No one makes a big deal about all the other words that are censored on the radio. People barely even notice. If fact there would be greater outrage if the word f**k was played on the radio because children might hear it etc and that word isn't even offensive to anyone

Basically what I'm trying to say is everyone needs to calm down and realise the song isn't trying to offend anyone, nor anyone who enjoys the song. At the same time it is a hurtful term for many and it really isn't a bid deal if that one word gets censored in the song.

Look on the bright side, the more that companies cave in to these whinging clowns the more their actual customers become vocal in their disapproval until the companies realise just what side their bread is buttered on.

The times they are a changing back

I agree with much of this, but not censoring out the word. As someone said previously it's art. Whats art for one person is utter crap and even offensive to someone else.
If someone doesn't like it then don't listen. If a radio presenter has issue with it then they shouldn't play it. But please let's not **** around with someone's art. Leave it be and listen to something that you enjoy instead.

Get Woke, Go Broke - some companies are learning an awfully hard lesson that this statement is true.

Then the same could be said for anything that gets censored. If that's the case we should uncensor everything. At the end of the day songs getting played on the radio is part of an artists bread and butter. They can refuse to sell their music to radios that will censor their songs but due to broadcasting laws means they will really restrict airtime. Suddenly artistry matters less. I don't personally see what is so artistic about the word ****** or what makes it more artistic that f*uck which gets censored in art all the time. The meaning/message of the song doesn't get ruined by censoring the word ******. So again its really not a big deal. No one would care if the word f*ck was being censored from the song.

If a media outlet, presenter or broadcast authority decides to make a policy on something that they believe many would take offence I would be in favour of either putting it on at an appropriate time or not at all instead of changing it.

Generally when cenorship is applied to something, it's from the time of release. Be it a song, movie or tv show. This is a different case as the song has been played on daytime media for over 30 years, but does raise an interesting debate.

In terms of this song, if a radio presenter or station decides not to play it then there's plenty of others who still will. There's too many radio stations here anyway for such a small country.

I think many who enjoy the lyrics of this song would be bothered by bleeping it out. And I don't mean idiots who are waiting to be offended by anything they deem to be some sort of lefty conspiracy, but people who genuinely enjoy the song. The lyric will be important to them as it provides insight into the character being portrayed in the song.

Indeed. You can literally listen to any song you want, whenever or wherever you want, on whichever device you want... and the easily offended are still furious that someone who presents a show on a dying radio station (not even the radio station itself, just some chap who works there) suggested that a swearword in one particular song should, as is usually the case with swearwords in songs, be censored.
