What specifically is depressing about the idea of radio stations treating the word '******' the way Boards treats it?

    See your problem?
    Context.
    You're welcome.

Sinatra worked into the 1990s and an average Yank tank at the time that song was written would dwarf your average car for the Irish market.

    Please.

Pretty sure Dave fanning was quite close to the whole thing and he said pretty much that today.

But I'm sure you know better.

I guess it might have something to do with the context.

One was used as a homophobic slur apparently and the other was not.

Which was the slur and which wasn't?

They both seemed to be used in the same way to me, both were used as an insult to someone.

Why stop at songs? Lets ban every Tarantino movie ever made. Or better still, why don't we revisit every book ever written and redact every word or phrase we don't like? **** it, let's go back to burning books.

According to Dave Fanning who was pretty close to it.

In the song it was referring to meaning of the word it had before which is many but one was a very lazy person.

This would go along with the fact in the song she's upset that he had so much potential but wasted it etc.

The other was the slur apparently.

    No, I don't.
    But neither does Fanning.
Why not just read the writers thoughts? Hmm?

Ronan Keating did an a very good mild and toned town version of the song .......NOT!

"You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy bundle of sticks'

Nah, doesn't have the same ring to it.

Yer man absolutely stealing a living off RTE the taxpayer, sure he's in good company where he is.

Did Shane have to go to the bother of writing that statement because of Eoghan McDermott's attempt to virtue signal. How depressing.

And he in the honeymoon period and all!

    It's nearly xmas.

Fire on the headphones and listen to this demo.

Ignore the words,, Listen to the music.

Now what people need to do is sign a petition to get Eoghan McDermott removed from the airwaves permanently for being this easily offended and he has no business speaking on a station that the hard working tax payers fund from their own pockets. This will signal that rational thinking people have had enough of snowflake pandering culture in this country.

This is a publicity stunt by this guy and 2FM.
The prcik will probably "resign" on air and then come back to 2FM after he has got his publicity.

Any chance Barry Lang could come down from flying and come back to 2FM Drive (not that I listen to the present gobsihte)?

I like Eoghan McDermott and enjoy his show on my stupidly long commute. I also dislike Fairytale of New York a lot. But I’d go with shane mcGowans explanation and leave it be.

RTE only hire people with McDermott's world view. They have alienated anyone under the age of 40 who is not a far left lunatic and they will reap the benefits in the future when their ratings fall off a cliff.

And a lot over 40, gone are the days of turning on the radio in the morning and listening all day to the one station, now with fools like him on it’s a day of changing stations to avoid the fools.

I've been a bit amused by this I'll be honest. I listen pretty much every day to his show and never heard him calling for a ban on the song at all. He merely brought up that a lot of swear words are bleeped or changed on radio tracks and that he was surprised that song didn't have a beep or blank due to the nature of the word and that a discussion with others led to that. To be honest on that I do think he has a point as it seems like it's ok to play that particular song with that particular swear word because of the song it is rather than anything else.

Honestly it's all a bit of a storm in a teacup and people demanding he be removed from the airwaves are the ones who maybe need to calm down a little. "Radio presenter expresses opinion on popular song" is hardly a major headline now is it.

Great to see that Shane McGowan has basically told the DJs to catch themselves on.

And I love the backlash they are getting....at last people are standing up to the continually offended.

    Mod Note

The mods are working through the posts on this threads so some of you can expect cards etc. A reminder as per the charter no abuse of presenters or guests on shows, no bickering at each other take it to pm and if you see a dodgy/abusive post, help us out and report it.

From here out no warnings it'll be bans.

    Seriously?

You can't slag a radio presenter?

I think in all this controversy some people are going OTT about McDermott, some even calling for him to be sacked are missing the point.

    He shouldn't be sacked.

The whole radio station needs to be shut down.

playing the song , unedited , now on Dermot and Dave. The lunatics have not taken over the asylum completely yet at least :)

I dunno, it seems that the anti-EMD brigade were SEVERELY offended by a bit of a throw away comment about a sh!te song.

He is an annoying little fart and it is a crap song. Ban it entirely cause I am sick of it. While you're at it ban All I Want for Christmas and Michael Bublé. Actually ban all Christmas music that isn't coral and beautifully serene.

Just listening to "Riders on the Storm" and can't believe that the Metoo crowd haven't been after it. The lyrics "Girl ya gotta love your man" are very oppressive and controlling beyond doubt. The vegans won't like it either "A dog with out a bone". Such imagery!!! And where do you leave "His brain is squirming like a toad"? Totally offensive to vegans to write such a vile image.

That's because it's an old song and the young people's radio stations don't play it. I hope the snowflakes never listen to The End. They'd lose their lives.

  • Registered Users Posts: 364 ✭✭gamecube

Can Eoghan stop playing the song if he wanted to or does Dan Healy have the final say on it being played on the computer playlist?

Mad stuff, I presume when the fictional character in the song was calling the other one a ****** she wasn't being literal, using it as a generalised term of abuse. I was about 16 before I knew ****** referred to someone being gay, in the same way I didn't know the literal meaning of bastard, it was just an abusive term.
Even if it upsets people (and I don't think it will unless they want to be offended) it shouldn't be censored, it is what it is. There certainly was a time when gay people were seen as the lesser, but that's well gone now. The Fairytale of New York isn't going to harm anyone.
By the way I wouldn't call anyone a ****** myself, no way, but the song is about two fictional characters. Fictional as in not real.

No words can harm you, yet many people seem to be getting uptight about a lot of them.

Have you heard about the people who want WOMAN to change to WOMXN to remove the word 'MAN' from it, or those who don't like the use of the word HISTORY, cos of its male connection?

You have to realise we now have a cohort of people who are actively looking for things to be offended by. There's not enough hours in the day for some of them.
