Oh god penny I'm so sorry to hear all you've been through! So glad you and the little man are doing better now though.

My lassie had viral meningitis when she was 7 months old and those initial days were hands down the scariest time in my life, I can't imagine how tough it was being so sick yourself and with a tiny newborn to worry about.

I hope he continues to get stronger and stronger and ye get home soon. Mind yourself x

Penny I don't know what to say. I'm sitting here bawling reading your post. I can't believe what you + your little boy have been through it's everyone worse nightmare. So glad that things are starting to look more positive for you both. You are going to need a lot of support in the weeks ahead to help you +babs with your recovery. The trama of all that alone woukd knock you for six never mind the fact that you have had a major operation + meningitis. Just to let you know I had meningitis myself when I was in college + I recovered well with no after effects apart from being l weak for about a month after I left hospitial.

Wishing you both a speedy recovery after everything you have both been through×××××.

Well things got very dramatic and very interesting for me on that fateful Sunday.
I came to the Coombe and within a short enough space of time my headache was crazy, couldn't stand the light, temp went sky high, BP did (for me) too and the baby was very tachycardiac.
Consultant admitted me and visited 3 times on Sunday evening and although baby wasn't ready to be born in terms of being favourable for induction she decided a section was the only way to solve the problem and it would be at some stage on Monday.
Then as the night wore on I got sicker and sicker and had to be transferred to another ward for closer monitoring.
Consultant came in at 07:00 on Monday said I was in sepsis and they had to deliver the baby sooner rather than later and it would be under GA as I was too weak for anything else.
Our beautiful baby boy was born on Monday morning.
Then I had some unexpected reaction to the pain meds where they just didn't work and when I woke up in recovery it felt like I was still open on the operating table. Lots of worried faces all around and they had to get two consultant anaesthetists to come and anaesthetise my lower abdomen to ease the pain.

I was then in HDU for two days on a morphine pump and super strong pain meds and antibiotics.
Our little boy was put on antibiotics as a preventative measure but they felt he was ok.

Things got normal and quieter for a few days and then on Saturday morning just before we were due to be discharged my baby's temperature spiked to 40 and he was whisked upstairs to the ICU where he has been ever since.

To cut a long and very scary story short we now know he will live and be ok. Apparently I had viral meningitis which is what brought me to the hospital all that time ago and it crossed the placenta and infected my baby's blood stream too.
Between yesterday and today he is making massive strides in his recovery and they are talking about maybe allowing him home this weekend.

It has been quite the roller coaster but thankfully we will all be ok and soon our biggest problem will be stopping his big sister crushing him with hugs and kisses.

Penny what an ordeal you went through. I'm so glad you and your little man are ok. Sounds unbelievably scary. Wishing you both a speedy recovery. Hope the family are looking after you both xxx

Thank you everyone for your really kind words, it's really lovely.
It is at times like this (much as that is a cliche) that you really realise who your true friend are and appreciate your family.
My family have been absolutely fantastic and there to mind our daughter and myself and my husband. All while they have been so worried about us and our little boy too. My sister lives in the UK and brother in Sweden and they've both flown home.
Our friends are great too and we're really lucky with all of the support we have had and continue to have.

It looks like we might even get to take our little one home with us today which would be fantastic. He has made huge strides in his recovery over the last 36 hours and it would seem that the rest is now up to him.
We're heading into the Coombe very soon this morning and unless there has been somewhat dramatic decline overnight then we should be able to bring him home at lunchtime! Fingers crossed.

Oh penny, that would be lovely to get him home today, fingers cross for you all.

So my bag pack, starving because no eating or drinking after 12 last night, I'm be heading to hospital soon, will update you all when I can.
    Oh the nerves & excitment

Ah yay! Huge congrats Aveen! Enjoy every second of the newborn cuddles (would love some myself!)

Betsie - same here, it's a bit mean given we aren't even due until tues (think we've the same due date!), people are annoying! My friend came over to do a bit of a tidy up waxing so I am good to go! My bump dropped massively today so I hope she's doing something productive in there aside from teasing me.

Penny - hope you got home!

I have 2 go 2 a 2 ye old birthday party tomorrow, the thoughts of it is actually making me sick 😞

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,102 ✭✭✭Digs

I suppose it can't go on forever girls :/

I'm bouncing on the ball, eating a curry being subjected to the euros. I'm such a cliche. Taking mild comfort in the fact my husband is missing out on the pub though. Such a witch.

Betsie good luck with that party, Ugghh sounds like torture!

    Hi Rogueish,

Are you having your baby on Tuesday ?? Me too :-) Elective section for me

Yes same here ECS next Tuesday. There are some days I'd swear I'm gonna go early.amd I'm ticking off in my head what in have to do i.e whose the closest sitter that can look after he boys til the inlays get here, does my oh actually have his phone with him, last minute things to put in the bag and then nope false alarm/hope.

It's mad. I don't know about you but I'm more than ready to have this baba. Everything is uncomfortable including almost all of my 'presentable ' maternity clothes. If i spend too long on my feet the Braxton hicks kick in and literally have me leaning on something til they pass. And if it wasn't for the Section date next week it could be another 2 weeks of this before we meet the babies. That's just torture.

My biggest problem is going to be my darling mum. She has already expressed her intention of pretty much moving in while I'm in hospital to look after my 2 monsters and staying the weekend I get out to cook etc. I know that I'm incredibly lucky but we pretty much have the childcare for next week sorted and while I'll be delighted to see her at the weekend there will come a point that I want the house cleared and just ourselves here. Anyway small problems.

How are you coping with the run up to Tuesday?

Congratulations on your lovely little boy Aveen, delighted everything went well for you.

We're still in the Coombe unfortunately. Our little boy had another of those cardiac episodes on Thursday night/ Friday morning and the cardiologist wants to be safer than sorry and has started him on a new drug to temporarily regulate the electrical flow through his heart.
They need to monitor the levels of the drugs in his blood and will know on Monday if they're happy to allow him home or not.
If the levels are too high or low the need to be adjusted and monitored further.
