It's best to sit on the fence in the centre lads :-)

Well in fairness teenage pregnancy rates are well down over the last decade as well as abortions so something is working. So there are less Aoifes about!

Probably a mix of Government and societal changes.

It's not, and neither is your statements that the left would be saying Aoife is completely blameless.

The thing is, the things you're mocking the left for, saying that money spent on sex education and family planning access would reduce the risk of pregnancy and that education would reduce the risk of a life on the dole are absolutely true. There will still be loads of individual cases where a person is just a lazy fu-cker who wants to live a life of laying about claiming all they can, but that doesn't make it any less true that family planning and education will reduce the overall numbers of people like Aoife taking up a life of social welfare.

However, my point that I made last night was different. It was even if Aoife is a lazy sod and wants to lay in her PJ's all day doing SFA, should we as a state just abandon her children or should we say FK them too and cast them as guilty of the mothers crimes? Or which imo is a sensible attitude, should we try to do all we can reasonably do to ensure that they choose a different path to her? Should we provide them with healthcare, secure and safe housing, free decent education?

If we don't provide those things then another generation of Aoife's family are going to make exactly the same mistakes their mother did.

People from poor families need to be afforded the opportunity to better themselves. This helps everyone in the long run in so many ways. Spend more now on education, crime prevention and health services to save even more money having to be spent down the line.

One man's hate speech in another mans common sense.

Is some of what Trump has said about Mexicans, Muslims, Obama hate speech? A lot of people say Trump speaks sense when he says what others consider racist hate speech.

It's hate speech in the wrong heads! Then again, is it that much of an extension from the way Republican party thinking has gone over the last decade? Ban all Muslims might seem logical but it's stupid and impractical.

Tbh the worst thing Trump said is calling McCain basically a coward for being a prisoner of war in Vietnam, like how dumb is that? In fairness he knew he fcuked up and is going after that vote now.

The comments on McCain were a disgrace and an insult into pretty much anyone who served in the military there. I still think the comments on Mexicans and Muslims are worse. Stirring up hate against minorities.

In other words the further you stray frim the centre the more you simplify an issue. Personal choice or circumstance where in reality both play a huge part.

It's the relatively ready availability of contraceptive and/or morning-after medicines, as well as improved teaching of arithmetic in schools. Any chungwan who thinks having babies to get more benefit is a viable career path has dire need of it, the creature.

In similar vein, some say the legalisation of abortion together with banning lead from petrol has led to many fewer maladjusted, badly-reared, defective nutters and hence a significant drop in crime rates in the US. How Right-Wing is that?? :D

Gimme a break. Go onto any single thread on here relating to the left in Ireland and you'll see a lot more abuse being spewed than what you say.

In fairness there's far more bile directed towards the poor in society.

In this country at least, a wealthy person has to do something pretty dodgy before they'll get much bile directed at them. And even then, they have the advantage of being in a position to lawyer themselves up if they want to put a stop to it.

Yeah, young uns these days know more than our generation did. Just more information out there, maybe most of it not Government, just more cop on. Probably ones who did get caught in the 80's and 90's making sure their young uns don't make the same mistakes. Young single mums seems to be more an inner city or disadvantaged area thing. Anyway, good to see it and abortion numbers down.

The US abortion thing, is that Freakonomics? Never bought the books but the podcasts can be brilliant. They did a good one about education and the precincts a few months back that would be relevant here.

Can't remember if it was Freakonomics but listened to a brilliant one about how Economics is based on us being robots when we are far from it, very entertaining and true.

Pick up any newspaper and you're more likely to see the poor being bashed than any wealthy person. If the "wealthy elites" are being bashed, it's invariably by the powerless. Also, over the last 8-9 years, the wealthy have become a whole lot wealthier, while the poor have become poorer.

I pretty much never encounter examples of people being disparaged merely for being poor. If people think putting down "scumbags" is the same as putting down people just for being poor, they're the ones who are saying scumbags automatically = poor. From what I see, it's behaviour rather than background that gets the focus.

There you go again. Magic money tree nonsense. Not all on the left in Ireland think like that and not all parties on the left are in fantasy land. Even if they are the point stands that you were crying that no one could insult the left then in your next two posts you do just that.

I can't pick up a bloody newspaper any more without seeing headlines blaming "bankers" for the "banking crisis", and a human interest piece about "the powerless" being evicted from their homes that they embellished details on their mortgage application to buy. I think it's more accurate to say that there are a lot more wealthy people in the country in the last 8-9 years, which drove up the standard by which we determine who is "poor". There's no such thing as poor becoming poorer. Either they're poor, or they aren't, and most people in Ireland aren't poor.
