whirlpool USA fridge freezer

    Hi all

    We have a USA style whirlpool fridgefreezer.
    about a month ago the freezer stopped working and then then of course the fridge. However after about 24 hours it started cooling again and got back to normal. However a few days ago same thing happened but this time it didn't return to normal. There is a slight smell coming from unit (empty of food). Is this refrigerant leaking? Freezer is 3.5 deg positive this morning.
    Applance is 7 years old. Maybe this is about how long they stick it out these days??
    any assistance appreciated. Doors are closed properly. Temperature set correctly.
