Its a lot more than 15 and 16 year old players from clubs. These 4 appointments, IMO, will be looking at how to get the best out of the kids playing rugby across the country. Be that those in schools or clubs. There is so often club players with as much or more talent as those in schools but they simply don't get seen. These appointments should see more of these kids who have the potential to progress up the levels in the sport to progress.
I assume they help coordinate what development officers are doing when they visit "non traditional schools" and are running intro blitzes etc etc

It's schools and clubs players. I think the best way to think of it is an extension of the sub academy.

I was at a talk last night with Nigel Carolan and he says its mainly to look for good players younger and to get them further ahead in their development so when they are at academy level less work has to be done with them. It shouldn't be restrictive to access to the professional set up and should in general improve the players
That was an excellent talk last night... plan for Connacht is very good.

Cheers gents, press releases weren't the most coherent thing I've ever read. Good idea, interesting to see how the dynamic works out with the development officers already in place and how they work together. Will they be in the big schools as well or just 'non-traditional' schools?

Most certainly. They will be in the clubs as well as schools. They will be, I guess, be looking at what is being done by development officers, club and school competitions looking at players and how theyre coached and see if changes are needed to competitions or events to help id players better in terms of progression to higher levels.

Sounds somewhat like 4 junior Nuicfera's. Really like the idea of it. Be interesting to see if they try and do anything with club comp's. Hard to see what they can do given some of the limitations/difficulties in terms of travel for underage club teams. Would love to see the no playing clubs if your in sect B/C school rule go.

Yeah that's a point of it.
What would you like changed about club competitions?
I think keeping part of the rule if attending and playing rugby in a section B/C school go but keeping other parts of it. IE having competitions for club teams where clubs are allowed use any players regardless of what rugby they play in a school.
For example there is open and closed cup competitions in North Munster to cater for those in the rugby schools and who are on the schools cup squads.
Extending competitions like those to Dublin and getting rugby school attendees back playing into clubs earlier in their teens

I'd love to see a couple of stages in comps in youths stuff. Maybe go league, then cup, then cup after schools cup is over where everyone is free to play (that is if the rule isn't removed). All the youths stuff I see seems to finish up at the very end of the year. Spreading it out a bit might make more sense. Even cup, league to cup might work.

Some kind of All Ireland at every age would be great too, even inter provincial championships. I'm not sure about the rest of the country but in Dublin it seems like each age group has one really strong team who coast to a certain extent.

Yeah. Theyre trying to do it though to a certain extent but at different pace in each of the provinces.
In Munster they go regional league, tiered provincial leagues, regional cups
Connacht have leagues then cups and this could change but number of clubs is an issue.
Youths do run to end of season due to large number of issues.

At what age would you start an all Ireland?
If not full official all Ireland competitions then more invitational tournaments are needed similar to this what Corinthians have ran at under 15 in 2015 and under 16 in 2016

If I'm honest I'm not really sure what I think would be the right age to start the All Ireland side but I'd guess U15 seems about right. We sent a team this and last year to that and the lads loved it. Great for people to be challenged by something/someone different. Also meant some of the cup guys were able to play which is great to keep the connection going. Maybe an idea that a club just host a weekend blitz similar to that from 12's to 15s and then maybe more of a structured/longer comp for 16s/17s/18s.

I'm really interested to see how divergent the approaches might be in different areas. I wonder what kind of direction etc. they'll get from HQ or if they'll be relatively free.

I think under 16 for completely open all Ireland cup competitions(as in based on the leagues that each province runs) BUT that their needs to be competitions like this that Corinthians run from under 15s and up.

    Leinster intake announced as below:

    Will Connors
    Max Deegan
    Hugo Keenan
    Conor O'Brien
    Jimmy O'Brien
    Andrew Porter
    Jack Power
    James Ryan

Any idea when the others will be finalised? Good intake for Leinster. I wonder if any of the Leinster guys who didn't get in will go to another province, Greg Jones and Vakh would be the 2 that immediately spring to mind.

Greg Jones is some prospect, very surprised if not snapped up by one of the others

He's not that good. Too lightweight to make the grade.

I don't think Max Deegan is too lightweight. Looks big enough to me.

    Deegan is 6'4 and 17st
    Jones is 6'5 and 16st 11lb

That is more than big enough to make the grade. Taller than heaslip, vdf and the tank at under 20. But hey what do I know.

What ever happened to Tim Carroll? He was a star for Roscrea and I know was part of the Connacht sub academy this year after leaving school but haven't heard anything about him.

He's moving back to Dublin and going to UCD on Ad Astra, not sure in relation to Sub Academy or anything

Apparently so. It's what I've been told anyway. They probably have one freed up from SOB at this stage as well.

There seems to be no end to the amount of scholarships UCD can offer!

Don't be so cynical, they only have the 4 - 60 ad astra and the 30 or 40 other cash scholarships. Not much in the grander scheme of things..... ;)

Any more news on academy places for next season in the other provinces?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,926 ✭✭✭✭phog

I'm hearing that one of the Munster lads on the U20s squad that was an Academy prospect for us is thinking of heading to France.

I'd rather not name the player at the moment as I've only heard it from one source, though both the source and the player are in the same AIL Club
