Invoices - late payment

Apologies if this is in the incorrect forum - mods feel free to move if it is.

I work part time for a company doing merchandising. I am responsible for my own taxes which is fine and am looking after that, part of the work requires driving/mileage so that is non taxable.

The issue of sending invoices is confusing. If I do the work on a Wednesday I can send in the invoice that evening but am obliged to wait 30 days to be paid which is fine.

However, payment is predicated on whether the boss is in the office on Fridays to issue payments. Its more hit then miss. I'm finding now that its going well over 30 days and I have to constantly ring/email in order to get payment. This has being going on for at least six months.

Can I apply an interest penalty if the payment is not processed on or after the 30 day period. Its now going into 60 and almost 90 day territory - they still expect the work to be done but payment is really slow.

I'm doing my best to get different work but until this happens - am stuck with this for the time being. I'd rather be doing something than not but I am tired of having to literally beg to be paid.

Get into the habit of ringing the boss directly when they go over 30 days

There was legislation introduced around 15 years ago to allow interest payments to be added on for overdue invoices. I don't know if it's done in practice though.

Tried that - and its usually "not in the office at the minute" line.

I just want to avoid chasing and do something that just might shake things a bit - legally of course.

You'd be better of posting in the Entrepreneurship and Business Management forum - this may feel like a regular job, but really you're running a small business and need to think of it like that.
