I bought a garden pump from lidl to make my water butts a bit more useable. The inlet and outlet both require a G1 (33.3mm) male connector. The suction side should have a non return valve in it. I popped into B&Q to have a quick look, but couldn't find anything suitable. They did have a filtered suction pipe from Hozelock, but it was a smaller thread connection(and €36!).

Any idea where best to pick up the appropriate hardware?

Any reasonable builders providers will have these fittings at a few euro each.
