Looks like an uncontained failure of one of the HP turbines.

There are an awful lot of 777s in fairness. 2 A380s would be very unusual.

What, why an idiot for taking hand luggage with them?

It's against all rules and delays the evacuation

    Seriously?

An aircraft is on fire carrying tons of fuel. Because of the fire they can only use the exits on one side of the Aircraft. The last thing people should be doing is delaying the evacuation with their duty free.

In the unlikely event I ever have to exit an aircraft in an emergency I will shove anyone back into their seat who is blocking the aisle to deal with baggage.

While I agree somewhat that bringing hand luggage is not the best idea in moment of panic/crisis humans do irrational things. Its our nature as humans to look for some sense of normality and even comfort, personnel possessions can give that.
However, what you are saying you would do is in my opinion even more reckless as you are adding another stresser into an already stressful situation which can lead to unknown results.
