For me it was Victarion and Euron who made the Iron Islands stories interesting in the book. Euron because he was really dark and sinister, and Victarion because he came across as a total badass warrior Viking.

In the TV show Euron comes across weak and lacking any real character, and no Victarion is a big disappointment for me. I have been looking forward to him appearing for a while now. The Kingsmoot felt really cheap.

However the rest of the episode was brilliant

It's all basically time wasting in the book though. The end result should be ships for Daenerys.
The sooner we get to it in the show, the better.

When it got going it was enjoyable time wasting or story, the Euron and Victorian bits were good and their involvement in the Meerenesse knot looks like it will be quite entertaining.

    The kingsmoot did drag on.

Yes the end result will be the same, ships for Daenerys.

The show already has too many characters so I'm not surprised they had to cut Victarion. Think we can expect to see more peripheral characters omitted too.

Am I right in saying that in the books Euron is still on the Iron Islands?

IIRC, he is. The show also chose to leave out the magical horn which can control dragons, which I suspect is actually for The Wall.

The idea of the Walkers herding a now marked Bran past the wall so they can bring it down sounds so much better than a magical horn! Curious to see if this happens.

I find all of the Iron Islands stuff including Vic and Euron to be terrible. I like Yara and her actress plays her really well so I'm not fussed.

As far as i remember Euron and Victarion went raiding down around Oldtown and took control of the shield islands down there, Then Victarion heads off towards slaver's bay with the fleet.

I'd say seeing as Sam and Gilly are headed down towards Oldtown, and the Tyrells are going to KL, some of the Ironborn will be raiding there in the series soon.

If that is time wasting then what do you call the last 3 books for Dany :P

Victarion has clearly not gotten over what Euron did to him those years ago. But he, like the rest of the Ironborn have to follow him. Unlike in the show where he admits to killing the king and the king's remaining children just take all the ships and men seemingly, despite all the lords being on Euron's side...

I know, I've a feeling they wont wrap it up neatly at all.
You can see the showrunners are looking to just get on with it now. No faffing around and they are just getting to the fire v ice end game.

I think my defense of the Ironborn book plot came from when they were cut from the last few seasons in favour of Dorne.

In retrospect, I thought the Ironborn stuff would have been better than the Dornish story line.

And Dorne turned out to be a mess on the TV show, way worse than I thought possible.

Including the Ironborn now is something at least, but its early days, I would have preferred to have Victorian in it, as he was kinda badass with his burnt smoking arm, etc and Euron was a lot darker shrouded in mystery too, who knew what dark arts he was in to. TV Euron is no where near as interesting as book Euron or Victorian.

This can't work out worse than Dorne anyways, amiright? :pac:

Is this really necessary? This is exactly what I meant about some posters bringing down the standard of the GoT threads because they cannot accept that some people don't have the exact same reaction to every single detail of the show as they do. Did you know Ned Stark didn't die either? It was actually just an actor called Sean Bean. Did you also know that giants don't actually exist? They're CGI as well. Tyrion isn't really witty, it's just the screenwriters... If you go down that path, then there's no point in watching the show because none of it is real.

There are a lot of things that should make people uncomfortable in Game of Thrones. Rape for example. Lots and lots of rape. Especially where they actually change the source material that had consensual sex in it so they can show another rape scene (Jaime/Cersei). That should make everyone uncomfortable.

In comparison, getting all teary-eyed about the quick death minor, non-human character that has contributed nothing to the plot of the show whatsoever is absolutely daft in my opinion, especially as that character died herocially trying to protect its master. If that makes you "uncomfortable", you must spend a large portion of the show wriggling about and feeling squeamish.

Of course I accept your opinion and you're absolutely entitled to it. I just disagree with it.

Will Jorah find a cure? I can't see the story devoting time to it. If I were him I'd start with Kyburn.
We know that Shireen has been cured before, but I don’t remember who Stannis said had done it… What are the chances of Jorah finding the same person though in what time he has left, especially since he doesn’t have money and influence.
I enjoyed the bit between Sansa and Jon, how she made him a cloak and he was all happy with it. I'd imagine it was the first gift he'd ever gotten off one of his family members, being kicked about by her and Cat especially when he was a kid, you could tell after she'd walked off it meant a lot to him.
I thought it was really sweet as well! In the early books she was very clear about referring to him as “my half-brother”, I don’t remember if they emphasised this in the show though (I don’t think there was really any Sansa-Jon interaction in the first season at all actually)

I wondered about the significance of Littlefinger’s final comment to Sansa about Jon being her half-brother… Was he hinting that the Tully army wouldn’t collaborate with Jon’s army since he’s (as far as any of the characters know) Ned’s bastard son and therefore an insult to Catelyn? Also how are they meant to link up with an army at Riverrun, to get to the North the Blackfish's army would have to go through Moat Cailin which is currently being held by Littlefinger and the Vale army. I know that Brienne and Pod managed to go around it before but it'd be impossible to do with a whole army.

I also feel that Brienne leaving Sansa is not going to work out well… Sansa is all like “Yeah it’s grand I have Jon” which suggests that actually she won’t be fine.

    Tormund is the best :D

Soooo the children of the forest created the White Walkers then. There is so much to analyse in that but I have no idea where to even start.
I’m not sure where to start with this either, and they didn’t really linger on the point. Bran just says “You created the White Walkers!” and Leaf is like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was really upset by Hodor’s death - presumably Wylis/past Hodor was able to feel himself being ripped apart by wights? And then lived with that knowledge for ~40 years until he had to go through it again? I also wondered if we’ll see undead Hodor or undead Summer in future episodes.

Yes I actually hated it. My least favourite book story arc by a distance.
Personally I hated the Quentyn storyline the most. I just didn’t care! Even Ser Barristan describes him as boring. And then he died a horrible death and I wondered why George R R Martin had made me plod through those chapters… But yeah the Ironborn stuff was boring too and I’m glad they’re going through it fairly quickly.

Thats true, his whole arc was a red herring really if he just dies at the end.

I can't see any other purpose to his inclusion but to show Dorans true loyalty, be rejected by Dany, show how she is still naive and rejects a decent marriage pact/alliance with the a powerful undefeated people in Westeros/offer of ships and army/free trip to Westeros. And free the dragons.

It cuts all possibility of a Dany/Dorne alliance when Dany lands on Westeros.
    It could be her downfall.

Why? She didnt kill him on purpose?

So if the Nights King is actually turned into a White Walker by Leaf, does the story of him falling for a walker-like woman north of the Wall have no relevance?

We know that, but does Prince Doran? Will anyone in Meereen be alive to tell him later.

Still rejecting his son is also an insult. King Aerys rejected Tywins offer to marry Cersei and Rhaghar and Tywin left the capital and returned later to sack it.

Within the book, it's mentioned that old nan's stories are largely just that - stories.

Euron was dark, mysterious, charismatic. And had the horn that has an amazing sound that could control dragons. In the show they have a dirty scumbag that tells the Iron Islanders "I just killed your king, follow me".
    Woefully done

Its an important one to bring gravitas to
    the death of Kevan Lannister
should the show's creators decide to go down that route. I suspect we would have met Quentyn by now if they intend to bring him in to the show.

    Actually,
Quentyn is burnt to near death by the dragons, right?
Or am I mixing him up with someone else? Ha! I think I need to re-read the last few chapters again.

So Brienne and Podrik are headed back to Riverrun? Will they have to pass the Twins? Maybe bump in to Brotherhood without Banners and a familiar face thought to be gone?

Ooooh, I like that. I want to Tormund to volunteer to accompany Brienne wherever she goes though! :D

No, I don't spend the whole time squimish... I gave a quick opinion on one incident in the episode this entire thread is based on. There's no need to take it for anymore than it is, or to bring other incidents in other episodes into it.
I had plenty of thoughts on this episode. One of them thoughts was that the killing of Summer was a tad too long for comfort. That's it. Not sure why you're making such a big issue of it.
