Kitchen counter top - type/make?

Counter top in kitchen from house built about 1992 is about 3 cm deep and 60 cm front to back. Front edge is curved. Lengths are joined with a metal piece. The material in the board seems to be some type of fibre board.
What is the counter top called, particularly the surfacing/finishing - in this case its a grey 'streaked' finish.
Any help appreciated

might help, my guess is its a chipboard inners and a simple laminate covering, not as advanced as the link

Thanks C52. I think you're correct. I see pieces of 'chip' on the underside, over the kitchen machines - obviously the anti-moisture strip has a limited lifes. Are all the laminate coverings te same material/composition. Obviously I need to google melamine.
