I've an 06 VW Golf that has a couple of separate dents on the tailgate. You can see them here:

There are a set of 3 small dents which also have fairly nasty scratches included and a separate, larger dent which looks like it could be popped out fairly easy.

I don't have any experience with dent removal but I believe I have three main options:
    • Paintless dent removal (if possible) and live with the scratches
    • Full bodywork and paint the panel (probably very expensive)
    • Find a new tailgate in a breakers
I'm leaning toward looking for a new tailgate as it's probably the most cost efficient. Is this a realistic option and does anyone have any experience hunting down parts? Would a second hand tailgate (even in the same color) still need a repaint?

id replace it with one from a scrapper. you'd get away with it if the shade is close. you're only bordering other metalwork over the light. you won't notice it against the bumper.

Dent removal and live with it. At least it will be original for the next owner.

What would dent removal be? 70? Not sure how much a tailgate would cost

Tailgate would be around the same cost.
It's a 10 year old 1.4 Golf to be fair, hardly a modern day classic where all parts need to be original :)

I think that damage might be a bit too heavy for PDR

Far from death. Plenty of life in her yet.

I think I'll have a look around for a tailgate so. The car only has 70,000km on the clock so it's worth keeping around for a while.

I don't think dent removal will look great tbh. You'd get it sorted repaired and painted for 250-300 if you can't get one in a scrappy.
