I like it alright and it does look very OEM. Trouble is I rarely see it in action myself for obvious reasons :pac:

Yes, narrow road and the inside edge of Tarmac had broken away, couldn't avoid it as there was another car coming towards me

Have to price a repair tomorrow.

Balls! Ah It doesn't look that bad though, definitely repairable I'd say. And it's on the inside only? No cosmetic damage. Easy enough fix surely.

Yes inside only, I'm hoping it doesn't need to be painted after its straightened.
Paint match seems to be tough on them.

Yeah I've heard that too. It's not plain "silver".

I've heard and read good things about Rim Solutions. I think they're out near Spirit Detailing.

Easy enough fix. I used Collins engineering and I had a good experience with them.

I've seen some of their work and will avoid, they seem to be very hit and miss.

Wheel wizards are consistent, I've had three sets of wheels refurbished by them with no problems. Also had one wheel straightened.

Irish review of a golf with nearly every option

Someone fancies himself for a gig on Top gear. The salesman was "a good kid"...

So I phoned my dealer last week to get a price to install/activate App Connect on my Golf. I have the standard system with the 6.5" screen and it's a matter of them plugging into the car and activating it. No return call surprise surprise, and I would say he has forgot. Poor service pisses me off. Anyway, I knew they had a new Passat in their showroom with a head unit with it so thought I would try it out and see if it is worth it.

I have an Android phone, so installed Android Auto, plugged it into the Passat and had a fiddle. Android Auto is good, and if I had it I would use it all the time.

Spotify works great, you can browse your playlists, genres, moods etc. You can also just play any song/artist you like by pushing the mic button on the steering wheel and asking for it. "Play Pearl Jam on Spotify" worked first time, Alive came on with the Ten album artwork in the background within a couple of seconds. Works great. Google Music and Deezer are also supported if you have a premium account.

Google Maps also works as you would expect. Similar to your phone it knows your work/home and the routes it picks are superior to VW's nav which sometimes chooses a bizarre route for a journey I am familiar with. Would also use this.

Phone works well, not much to say, does what you would expect.

I also pushed the mic button on the wheel and said "Send message via WhatsApp to John" and it guides you through seamlessly. When I unplugged my phone the message was sent on WhatsApp. Seems really good, and completely removes the need to peak at your phone.

You can also ask google general stuff like weather, when something is etc

Still undecided on spending almost €300 on it though, I am a bit tight ye see :)

I'm getting it activated tomorrow (hopefully!), all going well...

Save my money then OSI based on your experience? In the passat, I wasnt driving and it was only for 10 mins and worked perfectly but there are loads of reports online of how glitchy it can be.

What do you mean by you can't call by it either? Using the DIS?

I've not found it buggy lately - recent updates have helped it. It very much depends when you plug the phone in. If you wait for the system to start fully it is fine but won't be recognised if you do it before you start it. I've never had Spotify or play music stop but I have noticed the odd time the next track icon stays on the screen too long.

It's worth trying it when driving though - a few of the options disappear once the car starts moving forcing you to rely on voice control. That goes a bit hit and miss at high speeds.

It's a pity it doesn't work wirelessly too. Apple does support wireless CarPlay but it seems VW don't (yet). Having to connect the lightning / USB cable is a pain, although I realise a lot of people connect it all the time out of habit anyway.

That's a lovely R on the video review.
Is there any option he doesn't have?

I looked at a couple more videos he has up where he is driving on the road. I am not sure it's wise to post yourself doing launches and accelerating to high speed on public roads.

Mine looks almost exactly the same inside and out (barring the sunroof and the pro nav!).

He's ticked all the expensive options anyway.

Think it has them all, there is the "Carbon Leather" if you just want to throw money at the car. I sat in a Passat with the carbon leather and didn't like it all. There is no reason for leather to look like carbon fibre, makes zero sense to me and is a pricey option.

Options on cars are big money and hard to justify for me with my own money. I would like a sunroof, but is it worth 1300 euros or however much it costs, I'm not so sure. Then the other side of the argument is, if you're spending all this money on a new car, you may as well spend a few % more and get the options you like.

I think the "carbon" leather is also Nappa which is supposedly better quality than the cheaper vienna.... still crazy money for car seat upholstery though. Would you spend it on your living room 3 piece suite?!

Spec'ing up the car with the $$$ options is a sure way to burn money... it'll make the car a bit more special, an arguably nicer ownership experience but you'll see little or no return for it when you go to trade it in down the line, which is fair enough if you're happy with that prospect from the outset!

I use the "life is short" and " I could be run over by a bus tomorrow " lines when justifying cars and car related purchases, but would struggle to add all the extras on that car with my own money.

I think pcp where you pay for the extras over three years at a low interest rate makes it easier to spend however as you can say to yourself that it's only another few quid per month.
Don't think sunroof or dcc, bigger nav add much or anything to the residual value.

I was going to ask... did the real carsfan close his account in a fit of rage :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,792 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I'm the new improved carsfan😀 facelift model.
I closed my account as I thought I was spending too much time on here and didn't realise I couldn't just restart it hence the name.
This thread is too interesting to stay away from

I've sometimes wondered why regular posters close their accounts out of the blue. Why bother!

    Welcome back anyway :pac:

Dynamic lighting with lane assist and blind spot monitoring are two I can think of, can't make out if it has dynaudio from the video.

On his other videos, his rusty disc diy is good. Mine are looking the same.

Funny, even though his car is very new, his hubs looked far worse than mine do. I do have some rust but nowhere near as bad as what his were like. Seems to vary in severity from car to car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,792 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I didn't think dynamic light assist etc. was available here.
Wasn't on the options list when I bought.

Mine are as bad if not worse than his, 4k kms on my car.
My rear discs are well scored too...the fronts are fine, no rust and no scoring.
