Omega Speedmaster - are they worth €4k?

Are all Speedmaster models coming in or around the €4k mark? Instead of spending around €1,500-2,000 on my next watch, I think I might save a little more and get my first Omega!

How much would you pick up a good second hand one for? Does the residual value of a new one drop significantly once you put in on your wrist?!

    Cheers

Scanning through Chrono24 and watch recon, asking is anywhere from 3k dollars up to 4.5k for 2nd hand models, with lots of variation depending on specific models. You may get very lucky with a lower priced one in good condition, but you would have to be quick!

As both of those sites deal in 2nd hand watches, i think you can assume those prices are also a good ballpark figure for resale value, assuming you dont scratch the crap out of it.

Iconic have a good range of new models.

Deep thought sold his recently so perhaps ask him how much he got. His was only a year old or so.

Typically they sell on TZ for 1500-2000 gbp depending on year, condition, papers.

    Sure did...

They are lovely, and are as the old adage goes, are worth what someone will pay of it.

2nd hand tend to go from €2500 to €3100 (3100 would be the newer model (311.30.42.30.01.005 that replaced the 3570)

    Co-axial would be more again.

Chrono-Lounge in Germany sell brand new Speedmasters for €3,199. They usually throw in postage too. Have a look on Chrono 24. I've bought from them several times and they've been 100%.

Re residual value, I think they don't take half as much if a hit half as quickly as many other watches. There'll always be a market for a used Speedie.

Hi FDP - thanks for sharing that information. That seems to be the best deal so far - I did see a new Omega Speedmaster Day for €3,100 on an Irish AD website, but the Omega website states that the model is out of production.

Does unworn mean, that the AD displayed the watch in their shop but never sold it? There's another unworn one (exact same model) for €3,600!

Thanks for all the comments - much appreciated.

I'm not sure what "unworn" means really. All I know is the watches I've bought from Chrono-Lounge were brand new (stickers still on etc.). They buy them from ADs so the warranty card will be from an AD/shop. Makes no difference though as the watch is covered once you have the card that matches the watch.

I've mentioned them before here - no connection with them - just because they're good value and I've even been to their office (they don't have a shop, just a room in their apartment).

    You won't regret a Speedie.

They come up a fair bit on TZ-UK. Mitch B on here helped my wife get my pre owned Speedy 3570.50 recently. you need 50 posts to view sales corner. Money wise would be exactly what DT said.

Given Omega's (somewhat cringeworthy) marketing driven releases and price increases, that's not actually too bad, no?

How is it that Chrono-lounge Germany are so much cheaper than an AD?

I'd say because they are willing to take less profit and they've lower overheads (ie no shop).

Thanks FDP. I think I will be purchasing from them once I have the funds together. Thanks for all your help..

If I buy it on that website from a seller in the States - do I have to pay customs etc on delivery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,283 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

    Yep, most likely.

I suppose the cynics amongst us could ask 'Is any watch worth 4k?' I reckon if I was ever going to spend 4k on a watch I think I'd prefer it to be something rarer than a rolex or an omega.

You've contradicted yourself there slightly if you consider yourself one of the cynics? Is any watch worth 4K, yes is your answer if it's a rare watch other than an Omega/Rolex.

That's what's great about this hobby/interest it's so personal. If I only had €4K to buy a watch and wouldn't be in a financial position to buy again for a length of time then I think I would go for an modern/new Omega/Rolex/Breithling etc. However if I had a few expensive watches already and had another €4K to spend then maybe a vintage Heuer autavia white dial might be on my radar.

I suppose my point is a €4K watch to one person is so different to another in value/meaning/expense/collection etc. I would never spend €100k on a Clerk watch but then I don't have a a few million sitting in my bank account, if I did though would I then? Who knows....

I think in that price range though, brand attraction is frequently the most significant factor; I know when I first arrived at a position to buy a 4K watch, the choice I made turned out to be 1,000 watch quality and movement, 3,000 brand name. I recognise that now in retrospect. Just, when making that decision, it's best to be aware that actually is the decision you are making.

So I was in Weirs on Grafton Street and had a look at the Omega range. The Speedmaster Moonwatch is coming in at €4,400 without any negotiations. The same one online is a little over €3,100. The one I'm leaning towards is actually the Seamaster 300 black with rose gold, but it was over 5 grand in Weirs and seems to be in or around the same price online. I think I will wait and see what comes available online from the Chrono 24 website...

I have just seen a good value second hand Speedmaster for sale.
    Very tempted..

quick question, are they water proof?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,331 ✭✭✭Keyzer

I'm planning on getting a speedie in the near future and have been looking around for a good price. €4,400 in Weirs is a ridiculous price. Does anyone have experience haggling with them?

Alternatively, I'd be open to flying to Germany and paying a visit to Chrono Lounge. €3,199 is much more of a palatable price to me.

They're not a dive-watch, so that's an answer in itself.

    is 5 ATM = splashproof.

Additionally, you'd want a guarantee that the seals have been pressure tested. You're probably heading to an AD to get an Omega pressure tested.

Here's a Seamaster which is waterproof (30ATM) - I'd still be looking for a guarantee though!

What are people's thoughts on the racing version? A splash of yellow is a great touch..

I quite like the look actually.

I think they come in at 40mm. So if that suits you then they're fine. I find 40mm a fraction too small for a modern watch. Omega bracelets are amazing though.

I was hours away from pulling the trigger on this, this week, then the wife announces that an unscheduled trip to Canada for a family wedding is happening....

    Heartbroken!

I will be visiting Toronto this summer...
Has anyone experience of some good watch shops there..? Might be a good opportunity to get this watch.

Or...does anyone have experience buying an Omega (Speedy) in Las Palmas or near Maspalomas, Gran Canaria??

Hmmm, I may be wrong but I have never bought anything of value in the Canary Islands. There are genuine shops there but there are a lot of shops selling fakes.

You can check store locator on the Omega website and a few stores pop up in Gran Canaria..!!! I would buy it there if it is the same price as chrono24.co.uk ie €3,100 instead of €4,400 in Weirs for Speedy moon watch professional including the accessories with the black box!!

Haha, totally disagree. Relative of mine bought a ring in the Canaries with 5 white sapphires for around 300 yoyo, came home and she wanted her engagement ring valued for insurance. She took in the sapphire ring as well, turns out 4 of the sapphires are diamonds and the ring is worth about 4k.
