Presently none, and that includes electricity, gas, tv, water and daily garbage collection, I do however have to pay for full time maid/dog minder and gardener/car washer.

All house maintenance is also free of charge.

In London town my rent comes to approx 40% of my monthly income :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭whomitconcerns

In London too, 60% of net salary on rent. Commissions keep me sane!

19% of joint net income on mortgage. Family.

But surely that 30% of gross income can't be right? Unless gross income is meaning after tax but not after other bills? You'd have very little left to live on, use for childcare etc.

Just a little under a third of nett pay goes on a tracker mortgage.

That doesn't surprise me. When my brother lived just outside London he was renting a room for the same price as an entire 2 bed own entrance apartment that I lived in.

    Around 15% of net.

I never would of put you as a granny, mate.

How many grandkids you got, and do you ever skate with them?

Wonder why they call it a granny flat and not a grandfather flat?

Currently 32% of my net salary. Hopefully going down to 25% or so later this year with an expected salary bump.

That 7% will make a massive difference

A wee bit less than 25%, renting solo.

About 20%. I share with my oh. It's really good considering we live pretty close to dublin city centre in a three bedroom house.

about 25% of our joint net. Living in a fairly expensive US city, but taxes are lower so our take home pay is good.

18% net on house share Dublin

    Some interesting figures.

€1,500 a month would be €18,000 a year. For a couple on (say) €40,000 each and coming out with circa €60,000 net, that would be bang on 30%.

Just under 30% of net income. I'm on a good tracker and will have the whole thing paid off in about seven years as I'm overpaying!

None. I own my place outright. But for back when I did rent, it would be about 30-35% of my monthly income. If you are paying more than 45% your rent is unaffordable. It's a lot to ask - foregoing the little luxuries in life like eating out, nice clothes and holidays - just so you can keep a roof over your head.

    Rents in Dublin are criminal.

    10% of net

22% of net income on rent and the same again on savings for a house deposit

I'm actually surprised that more AHers aren't stretched - 15 to 25% seems to be the average. Actually a poll would be useful for a thread like this.

In London housing affordability is so bad that the average rent gobbles up over 50% of the average salary. The new London mayor, Sadiq Khan, has made housing the biggest issue in his campaign.

Its amazing how people are so quick to come forward with stories of their financial savvy.....

"None! I saved up and bought! I bought at a great time! I've paid off my mortgage! I worked hard when everyone else was boozing and spending their wages on slot machines! I don't know why anyone would pay so much......are u guys nuts!!"

Smug corner is to the left........

16% of my net income goes on rent. I am sick of renting/flat-sharing though, deffo looking to buy in the next year or two.

FYI, if you want to reduce the percentage of your income spent on this (in Dublin anyway), lobby to local politicians and your council, to ban AirBnB - which is causing significant distortions in the rental market - removing a portion of the rental stock, from long-term local rentals, to short-term tourist rentals - at a much higher rental price (shifting the whole rental market, towards scarcity and higher rents).

Not the sole contributor to the problem, but a notable one.

Funny, because a lot of the 'rentees' have moved into Hotels....

Overall I disagree though; you cant ban AirBNB.....its a free market.

I'm separated so pay rent on a 1 bed apartment which is 16.5% of my net plus I pay 50% of the mortgage on the family home for my wife and kids which is another 19.% of my net so in total 36% of my net on accommodation costs.

There's no such thing as a free market - every market in existence is regulated in one way or another - believe me, it's quite possible to ban AirBnB; other countries have done it.

22% of net for my mortgage, semi d in south Dublin, one income family of 5.

Bonuses and expenses push it down lower

    Yep renting is a waste.

Were paying 750 for a 2 bed apartment here in limerick. Its actually cheap now considering the crazy rental prices. It'd probably be about 900 if I renewed the lease. Mental and they go for about 100k up until recently.

But I'll be moving into a newly built semi-d for 800 quid a month. No brainer really. And having your own front door with front/back yard is a big bonus.

Up until last year I was paying about 16% of my net income on rent (sharing apt with boyfriend).

Bought since, and now its only about 12%, although I've been spending a fortune on furniture, decorating etc so I don't feel any better off just yet!
