Next time just agree to the race and let him tear off into the distance. Everybody wins

This guy was actually scary! I told him he was acting stupid and I was not racing him, but he did not get it!! Strangely, he left his female companion continue on their intended route. Probably some sort of legend in his own cycling world. One whom you dare not pass lest you are prepared to duel to anaerobic death to prove if you were worthy to pass them.

After thinking about this today, I'd probably have gone with a constant "no thanks, I'm good and enjoying myself as it is"

You never know what's going on in someones head/life, like that dude you met. He might actually not "be well" rather than an Ejit etc. :/

^^ That's also a better option and a winner in my books :D

Same here dastardly, just back from a 65km spin from Lucan to Blessington and back via the hills, 2 hailstones showers, stopped under the trees twice, no cafe open in Blessington so stood outside a garage while it was raining, but some lovely sun and dry roads as well!

Athlone Dublin. 133km. Weather was a bit all over the place. Covered 100km in the first 3 hours. Averaged 33km/h for the first 110km. Then I/the wind died and slogged it home for an average of 31.6km/h

Met a lad coming back from the REV UP 4 DSI. From what I gather its a motor bike fund raising even from Dublin to Sligo. He cycled down on Saturday and as cycling back today. Fair play to him

    Great day out.

Set myself a target of 5000km for the year but looked there and i have 3100km done already, re adjustment to 7,000km maybe.

Rolled around for 36km today after yesterdays exertion, hopefully it will eases the stiffness a bit. Windy was pretty hefty though and worked a little harder than i planned to.

From yesterday did about 60km including Healy Pass, very windy. Had to pedal down hill...

Today was my 2nd spin (yesterday 1st) after one month illness. Nice to be back and lovely day to boot. Felt good but lacking a bit of power /fitness.

Cycle was tainted a bit due to an encounter with another cyclist whom I passed. He raced past me and was giving it verbals that I could not keep up or something like that. He even changed his route and came after me to continue his 'race' and the verbals.

Kudos to the guy, he was in good shape, but trying to cajole a random person to race him made him look more like an immature show off than a good cyclist! But he was no kid....think he should have more sense!

Has this ever happened anybody else ? I hope this guys attitude to sharing roads with cars and people is better.

    Youre very polite.
He sounds like a c**t and deserves a slap.

Good advice. I sort of did this by ignoring his request and not upping my pace-even slowing to avoid him! But he was a determined type and would slow, allow me to almost almost catch up, mouth off, then sprint off again. The first time he slowed down I did not know what he was going to do ( the thought of him trying to knock me off my bike or worse were in my mind), so I slowed up too.

In hindsight, what I should have done was turn around and leave him to his own game!

I have been cycling over 30yrs and never encountered such aggressive behaviour from a cyclist.

:-) Probably...but I was not in the mood for playing his games.

By the way, we met in Laragh last year and cycled up Glenmacnass. Hope you are keeping well.

    Ah I remember alright!
All good here, trying to get in shape for the Wicklow 200, new job in Feb has hindered training compared to last year, but getting there.
    Hope youre well yourself.

Never posted in this forum before but need your expert advice giys and gals. I'm starting a new job next week and im thinking of cycling instead of driving as it's a 9-5 so traffic will be mental. I'm commuting from Cabra to Ballymount Dublin12.

Is it do able and would I do it under an hour? Im quite fit and my bike is a carbon frame so it's pretty light? Any advice is appreciated :)
as per previous re shower/changing, someplace secure to lock your bike in work is also a must.

just under 90 kms on Saturday, Naas to Athy and back. Through Newbridge on the way out and back via Kilcullen. Weather wise it was a real smorgasboard from hail showers to glorious sunshine and thundering rain, typical April weather. A great couple of hours though!

Finally got my bike from the bike to work scheme (Cannondale CAAD8 Sora).

Two spins under my belt over the weekend - forgot to Strava the first, so apparently it didn't happen, but it was 30.7k (per Google) from Greystones to Roundwood via Kilpeddar. Tough tough climbing for the first half - cramped up really badly on a steep climb, no option but to get off and stretch it out before getting back on and then a descent of Slaughter Hill into Newtownmountkennedy, which was even less fun in that it was scary! That said, looking at the faces of those climbing in the opposite direction, I had the long straw! Easy roll from there back to Kilcoole and Greystones. Map of it here: https://www.strava.com/activities/560888384

Yesterday was an easier leisurely spin out to Ashford via Newcastle and back via Cullenmore then the N11 with a neighbour: https://www.strava.com/activities/563025886

Delighted to be out on the roads, and I love the camaraderie of it, getting nods or waves from other cyclists on the roads was very encouraging. Cycling on the N11 scared the bejaysus out of me. Very surreal being on a major dual carriageway and seeing butterflies so close to the road and hearing birdsong. Even there it feels closer to nature!

Fair play those are some challenging climbs/descents to cut your teeth on.

Look into some of the bits of climbing /descending technique on YouTube etc and practice them on a less challenging route to earn dividends when you push yourself again.

3 x 60 rpm efforts with high rpm recovery in between. Tough but not too bad, kept it short and at 30kmph average. Training peaks emailed to increase ftp to 260 watts

Is this it?! The start of the summer? Short commute to work ~10km, base layer and jacket, sweating by the time I got in.

On the negative, two commuters zipped past me up a short hill, and I had nothing in the legs to catch them. Need to do a bit more, or less, who knows?

A friend of ours who lives between NTMK and Roundwood tells me that it's called Slaughter Hill after a battle during one of the rebellions (1798?) in which many British troops were ambushed on the road up to Roundwood.

But yes, having been on it now, I can understand why cyclists might well appreciate the name too.

My first road bke (Cannondale - as per here) was delivered yesterday. I took it out for a test on a SCD route around Killiney Hill, Dalkey, DL etc. I often do on my hybrid (and give it loads).

Took 5:34 off my previous best time of 48:49... and set PRs in 15/18 segments.

Now, I ain't going to make the Giro on Friday, but wow, what a difference a bike makes. I haven't even figured out road bike gears yet.

    Good times.

82 km yesterday solo from rathmore to home with 29.6 average.

42 km this evening with the club 27 avg.

Happy enough with training at the moment, usually only getting out on Sundays but gym work in OBF has my hips and back in much better shape so when I do get on I'm moving much better on the bike

Short spin yesterday evening in the fading light: Greystones - Delgany - Kilmacananogue - Kilruddery - Windgates - Greystones. 23km exactly. Headwind was a killer between Greystones and the N11 on the way out. I'm clearly not aerodynamic given my 110kg bulk. Incredible though how it can affect times - last week, when just taking the bike home from the shop, I did the only segment en route in 1:57. Last night the wind added 54seconds to it! https://www.strava.com/activities/565500941

I think I was making more in my mind of Bray head than was warranted, although it was N - S. Funny thing is, I could have done it faster I think. Got caught on the wheel of someone slower and couldn't pass until Bray Golf Club due to the volume of traffic. I offered my wheel but alas he wasn't able to stay with me. All that said, I still have to tackle it S - N. That's pencilled in for Sunday.

Picked up my first puncture too, but I was only about 200m from home, so walked it in.

Tonight I'll be fitting SPDs and doing a puncture repair and, if there's time, give the bike a bit of TLC and clean it down.

Get yourself a saddle bag & have at least 1 if not 2 spare tubes and levers so you can change out the punctured tube when you are out so it can be repaired when you get home.

Have saddlebag with two tubes, three canisters of CO2, self-adhesive patches and levers (and emergency cash) Only thing missing from it is a mini tool kit (Aldi have one this week, I believe). It was only that I was practically on my doorstep that I didn't bother doing it on the spot. Why bother on a breezy main road when my warm house is within sight!

It's fine, just tackle it in 3 stages. A ramp at the bottom, levels off in the middle, and ramps near the top again. Neither of the ramps are significantly harder than N-S when just coming off the roundabout IMO.

If you're looking for more climbs try Kindlestown. It's a much quieter road and you can then try Bohilla Lane from there. Although short that one is quite steep! They can done from both sides too.

More testing today. This time 22km at 90% effort on a flattish circuit at a much lower cadence than I usually ride in. All good but run in to home was tough. 34.4kmph average with 85% in Z4.

I can feel the time trial form coming, for my amount of training that I can squeeze in
