But even reddit is still the old style. small text hundreds of sections. just a mess. but it works. kinda relieved to see im not the only one on this page. a shame really but guess times change.

I've pretty much switched to reddit. Only really stuck around boards for this forum but it's basically dead nowadays.

I was having a look at reddit last night. Just don't get the format. I know there's everything on reddit, but I'm just too lazy I guess. :P

I just come onto Boards to read the beauty section and PI/RI. This place was fantastic 3/4 years ago. :(

I both hate and like reddit.

I like the threaded comments because you'll see the best stuff fairly quickly.

But I hate the threaded comments because I feel it doesn't allow for long conversations like Boards does. I always feel if I get to a thread on reddit when there's like 100 comments already that there's no point posting anything other than a reply to someone, because it'll be all the way at the bottom and no one will see it.
On Boards, long conversations are way better (take threads in the TV forum as an example). You can track entire events chronologically, and jump in at any point and immediately be part of the conversation.

I also dislike the "karma" nature of everything. I think the fact that there's a trackable score that you can look at makes like-whoring par for the course on Reddit.

I dislike that every subreddit has its own style. I find that incredibly jarring when I'm browsing.

We need to do a year of The Gathering, where everyone who left comes back and we pretend that it will fix the economy. :pac:

I got stupid and wistful this morning.

I currently pay €300/month in rent for a room in a 5 bed house in a pretty ****ty estate in Limerick.

For funzies, I looked for houses for sale on Daft. If I could secure a job that paid >€25,000 a year, I could buy a class 2 bed apartment in a really nice estate, and if I rented out the spare room I'd basically end up paying €250/month in mortgage repayments, and I'd own the place outright in 5 years.

It's odd how my priorities in life have gone from "How many cheap Steam games can I afford during this sale?!" to "I wanna buy property!" in the space of 12 months...

I'm in Limerick and so far all I've done is go to Starbucks in the train station while waiting for a friend to finish work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

I'm in Limerick, and all I'm doing is sitting in my room trying to block out the neighbours who've been playing music at top volume in their back garden since 3pm yesterday.

    I need a job. :(

Could be worse, turns out I've to help move my sister out of her apartment. THAT'S gonna be fun.

I had a dream....well I guess more so a nightmare about being back in secondary school. Just back talking to old classmates....kinda like a reunion I suppose. Its incredibly mad to think that at one time pretty much everyone my own age was doing the exact same thing as me at one point.....writing English essays, figuring out maths formulas, doing homework. Now weve all gone on to live such different lives. Even people from my year alone. Some have gone on to accomplish so much. Theres a girl doing medicine in trinity, another who has kids, another who studies/works in media and is essentially an almost mini celebrity, another is living in Australia....and its just insane to think back that once upon a time we were all the same. Same clothes (uniform) same day same in nearly every single way and yet Ill probably never see most of those girls again and weve all taken such a different course in life we'll never be the same again until were all 6 foot deep in the ground.

    Jusy random mumblings......

    Windows 10, a pile of utter sh*te.

    - No drivers for one of the audio things installed on my laptop.
    - My touchpad is no longer capable of one touch scrolling (common issue)
    - No drivers for the model of printer I have
    - Absolutely horrendous to use when you need to use a magnifier like I do. Searching from the start menu is nigh on impossible because it does something incredibly weird, and the zooming in and out shortcut will randomly stop working (which it never did on 7)

I didn't even WANT to "up"grade, I just wasn't paying attention two nights ago, and next thing I knew my laptop was shutting down and installing the update.

    Again: Pile o' sh*te.

I've made sure to take preventative measures to stop Windows 10 from installing.

History will judge Windows 7 kindly.

    I reverted to Windows 7.

Here's a cross post of my rant on Facebook on this topic because I can't be arsed retyping this:
    TL;DR of this diatribe: **** Windows 10.

So on Monday night, my laptop decided to upgrade to Windows 10. I, like a lot of people, have just been ignoring the notifications to update, more out of laziness than any particular aversion to trying it out. So, while I was slightly peeved that the process seemed to start without warning, I was willing to give it a go, and I had always intended to try out 10 eventually.

After using it for 2 days, my laptop is currently in the process of reverting to Windows 7. Why? Simple really. I rely on a magnifier to use computers with any degree of speed and efficiency. Zooming in and out quickly, colour inversion and decent cursor tracking are features which I rely on.

The state of play in Windows 10? The inbuilt magnifier stalls whenever I insert a USB device meaning I can no longer zoom in or out, the newly designed Start menu is flat out incompatible with inverted colours, Magnifier no longer tracks your selection when ALT+Tabbing through open programs (a pretty vital thing if you have as many incognito browser windows open as I do... wink emoticon ), and in general cursor tracking is all over the shop.

The issue of accessibility in software has been a major gripe of mine for many a year. Now, I'm well aware that there is no sure-fire solution to making an accessible piece of software or OS, but I HAVE to ask, did Microsoft consult ANY visually impaired users before pushing this new version of Windows out? Because honestly, I discovered these issues within 2 minutes of logging into Windows 10 for the first time, and Windows 10 has been out what, over a year at this point?

So either they consulted people and ignored their advice, or simply flat out don't give a damn, because I refuse to believe a competent QA team failed to notice these problems during testing. And frankly, I'm not sure what's worse.

And finally, the crowning turd in the punch-bowl (to quote General Melchett), reverting to Windows 7 was a 6 step process, including having to fill out a form as to why I was reverting, a huge warning about backing up my files (incidentally, no warning to do this when upgrading, it's almost as if they were trying to deter me from reverting using scare tactics), and a final "You can still cancel even now!" dialog.

6 steps of pleading to get me to remain on Windows 10. Not a single "Are you sure you actually want to update?" message.

So, it looks like I'll be clinging desperately to the Windows 7 life-raft until Microsoft eventually shoots a hole in it as they did with XP.

Honestly, if anything software is getting more inaccessible to me as time goes on. Virtually all the trendy design styles used across the tech industry are an unbelievalbe pain in the face for me.

i could argue with the issues youve listed as ive just upgraded a 2005 xp computer with no drivers supported past windows vista all currently working. but to be fair i dont care anymore i dont get paid by MS to promote 10. the only issue is it takes weeks to fix the problems and well thats what i get paid to do lol. :pac: . TBF MS kicked themselves in the sack by trying to fix something thats not broken. they clearly havent got the memo since 1985. and they just sent out more updates which has broken my desktop and laptop #notimpressed just means i have to waste more time fixing an issue that shouldnt need to be fixed

Got approached by two lovely Latvian gentlemen in town today who wanted "€2 for a bottle of booze?". I appreciated their moxy and honesty.

Not enough to give them cash, but still!

Can anyone enlightened me in these two things

Apparently FG only managed to get 25% of the vote yet still won(makes no sense to me at all, I must have picked that up wrong)

And why can't we fire those people that work for Luas(I can't call them drivers after the mockery they're putting the country through)

I just don't even know anymore

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,576 ✭✭✭pajor

I can answer one; the Luas drivers are protected by trade unions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

Plus, isn't Transdev a private company? In which "we" (taxpayers) have literally no say in their industrial relations. And Transdev would be incredibly unwise to fire the drivers, as it would probably lead to an all-out strike by SIPTU which would bring the entire country to a halt.

As for FG, they "won" because they won more seats than any other party. They're still the most popular political party in the country.

I've an idea for you. A few years back on another forum on a different website, a few of us arranged a session of power-posting. Not spamming pointless stuff, but posting relevant updates in as many existing threads as we could think of. D'you reckon if a few of us tried that some day we could kick-start a bit of life about the place again?
